im on the flow team of beyond skate. and its definatly overated. me and the team have to work at the shop at least once a week. were given a choice of 10 decks per month, they have to have 1 big beyond sticker on them and we basicly have to wear a beyond shirt wen were skating. thats all, were not given money, so me and barry and david and rhys are all living in the same house struggling to pay rent, by selling some of our flow stuff to kids at our skool lol. believe me being sponsered isnt as easy or luisurely as it seems.

Let me just make a quick statement for reality purposes...

Yes, I do ride for a couple local shops, but all they do for me is give me decks from time to time (mostly to try out, almost like a critic)
Secondly, I do have a JOB! There is NO WAY I could support myself skateboarding..I have a house, car, bills, 2 cats, and a motorcycle. All of which total to about $200,000 in financial debt. None of which I earned from skateboarding. That was EDUCATION!!!

Skateboarding has been my "get out of reality for a while"!
When I skate, my mind is next to blank. I have fun, I enjoy it.
When I was younger, my goal for skateboarding was to eventually be sponsored. I achieved that, just it was not what I expected. Whereas before I skated for my personal enjoyment, now I skate for others enjoyment AS WELL..
I do hope most of you guys get to where your goals are, but take what you can get. I realized years ago that a major shoe deal, board design, was not in the cards for me...But, everyday I think about skateboarding and I hope to ride forever (in my head at least)

im sponsored by The Wallet, The Wardrobe & The Shoerack.

actually its kind of difficult to say you never thought of wanting to get sponsored for skating, especially if you have been skating for at least 4-5 years. i mean, other than trying to perfect your old tricks and learning new ones, surely there's something you dream of in the back of your mind, people to admire your tricks, people to tell you you're good, and the adrenalin rush of doing tricks for people to wow at. just like all avid footballers and basketball players. how many do not dream of becoming pro. they find fun in what they do but to be able to do that for another 10-20 years, they need incentives.. practical incentives...
i don think of getting sponsored when i skate (because in the first place no one here gets sponsored. its not common) and i know 10 years later, i probably will still be skating, but most probably without such passion. just for some fun.

no offense to those who think otherwise!

thats cool, but dosent applie to every skater, look at darren nolan for instance, he's turned down numourous sponsorship oppertunitys with some of the biggest companys going, all because he enjoys skating because its fun, not for fame or self gain or to get noticed.

but yeah man, i do totally agree with you, especialy the part i have bolded, although if the chance came along, it would be a awesome experiance, vegas_rob knows what im talking about.

The only thing I will say, is don't base your skating on sponsorship.

I thought everything would be so cool when I got sponsored. I thought everything would be different and a whole new world of skating would open up...but the reality is, I just have a few more shirts. That's all it is, a few more material things...and that could never replace the feeling you get from skateboarding.

Too many people view sponsorship as the highest point of achievement. They don't see anything beyond, and therefore, usually don't understand what a sponsorship is. These people usually don't really care for skating and only do so to accomplish that goal. Most realize after a day/week/month that this goal is unachievable (based on their short-term experience) and quit.

My point is, somebody flow me a deck.

When i get about 18-ish i will try to get sponsered. But like others have said it isnt about getting sponsered its about the fun of skating. I mean it would be awesome to be sponsered. Free boards and what not. Pretty good money. If i do in the future i still will have fun with skating.

Daniel Jones
04-30-2006, 07:25 AM
^Nope, not pretty good money. You don't get money unless you're pro. Also, it's not like people are just sending you boxes of free clothes and decks every week. Unless you are sponsored by a big company like Element or something, they're on a pretty tight budget and can only give you a certain amount of things per year.

that's CRAZY if your cousin is really on flow for fast forward. because i try try try to get on their flow team and it never happens. and i'm a heck of a lot better than ollieing a 3 set.

I'm all about skating for fun. I'd just realllly appreciate at least a deck sponsor, because i'm having to pull tricks to afford decks. I break them too much! It's to the point where i'll say "I can't go skate the 10 today because I might break my board. I dont like that.

for me it seems like a decent sponsor is a long process. there's a local shop that would want me on, but i dont want to at all because they will take anyone who has been skating for over a year. i'd rather get on a shop team who is a strong and skillful, and you would have to prove you can be up with them.

sponsorship is a waste, it takes away all that is righteous and fun about skateboarding...case in point... the first ever skate contest at our new skatepark was held last weekend...it was sponsored by a company called FITFACTOR... dont ask me what it is...but anyways they asked for judges so I was a judge... I thought hey this might be cool....and then I get to the park...I've never seen that many prize raffles, gimmicks and advertisements since I watched X-games on TV...

All the people getting sponsored nowadays arent doing anything worthy of progressing the sport....This current wave of skating is about to crash out major style...it will take another set of innovators like the z-boys, bones brigade, or some group to reinvent skating or push the limits even more or bring the limits back to an acceptable level...

Money detracts from FUN....remember thats why we skate...or...some of us do.. if you want to argue with me about skateboarding in the olympics or its current state bring your A-game...people want to know why we skate banks, and grocery stores...CUZ ITS FUN...dont complain to me about not having a park...they take the spontaneity out of skating...

I think I trailed WAY WAY off topic...but anyways... Sponsorship is a JOB with no benefit to you..they use your name to sell their stuff and to make money off of you...so make and sell your own stuff if you want to turn FUN into a job.. and

NO I HAVE NEVER and NEVER WILL BE SPONSORED...due to my arrogance or what have you..

sponsors are looking for fresh young skaters who can throw down a wide variety of tricks on different terrain. you cant just get sponsored by kickflipping massive stair sets (unless youre gay corey duffel)

and doing a 180 off a curb is nothing. garbage. pointless. as is kickflipping on flat, unless if its in a run that can make up for it...

Sounds like a brilliant deal to me!

I'm sponsored by:

www.reverse-freestyle.com - Decks
www.smallschool.biz - Clothes/Wheels
www.shiner.co.uk - Draven Flow

And you know what? I skate, and it's still fun! Anyone who says sponsorship sucks the fun out of it either have had really bad experiences or sponsors that wanted far too much.

Luckily, i'm in neither position - my sponsors are nice people who expect little in return, some footage here, some promotion there - job's a goodun.

That's sick. What was Popwar just flowing him stuff every month or so?

I may collect all my best footy for the next year or so and come up with a sponsor. Don't know who to give it to, though; there are no shops 'round here who sponsor. Although, there's a shop in another small town near us, not sure if it's worth it. The owner was stoked on my skating when I went to their park, so I guess I got nothing to lose.

Having my tricks down and progressing is more important to me than being sponsored.

No-one's saying that being sponsored's important, but it could be argued that by being sponsored your progression increases due to the motivation to represent your sponsor and having adequate gear when you need it rather than skimping on boards in the first place then riding them til' they're little more than a toothpick.

It's strange how some people percieve sponsorship to be an 'evil' kind of thing, like selling out or something. As long as it's with a company that you'd support regardless of whether you were sponsored, it matters very little.

Nah, I'm not sponsored. I don't really think I'm good enough to be. I honestly don't know if I am going to get any better then I am right now.

If I do get sponsored, I don't want it to be anything big. If it does go big when I still am progressing I will feel way to much pressure to be perfect.

I hope to keep improving and get a small sponsor such as a local shop. If I get to a point where I feel I cannot get any better (Not as in the best ever, just I cannot improve anymore) I will make a sponsor tape and send it to Matix and eS.

Matix because I love there clothes and eS because they are the only shoes I buy at the moment.

And to be completely honest, I wouldn't want to be sponsored. I would just like to be good enough. It's not about your labels and such, it's about how much fun you're having. I would just like to be amazing, but not be known. I'd like to keep to myself and just skate.

I would like to be sponsored but there are no skateshops were I live that give sponsorships sadly...theres only one shop were I live and it wont sponsor anyone so how can I apply for a sponsorship I mean I know im not good enough to get sponsored by a huge company but something like a local shop sounds good to me...what should I do?We dont even have a skate park in my town but were gettin one this summer and maybe another one next summer...also do you think once they open the park theyll start small sponsorships...and if so how good do I need to be to get one it sounds like you gotta be really really good....can you list off some tricks that I for sure will boost my chances of local sponsorship?

if you get sponsored, then it is no big deal, so long as you can promote the brand to a degree that it is satisfied with, however if you want to take it further it takes a lot of hard work, not only being good, it involves intense dedication and commitment to your skating and getting you (and in turn your sponsors) recognition.

its a great oppotunity, but if you are serious about it, it will eat up alot of your time, if not, then enjoy the benefits whilst you can :)

Agreed, and yeah it takes a lot of work. Carrying a sponsor means that you have something that they can use for whatever purpose that company or teams purpose. When you can show excellence in the particular area they are looking for (character, skill, and style have a lot to do with it.) you have that much more of a chance at getting sponsored by them. Different organizations and companies have different goals and thus look for different things to sponsor.

I personally ride for a team and a company. The team is Saved Skaters (www.savedskaters.com). they have paid my way to tour with them and have the chance to share about my faith through skateboarding. I now help manage different aspects of the team. The company is Believe Clothing, which is being absorbed into the Anti-Shop along with the riders. So I guess it is the Anti-shop who is my sponsor. :) Its been a while since I put anything out to potential new sponsors, although I have had offers previously from a company or two. More i am just focusing on my skating and helping with SS. We have a big tour this summer and are gunna be flying 7 skaters out to NY. There is lots of planning to do in that. Lots to keep a man busy. lol Though this forum takes its own chunk of time.

is Arto-Geoff serious about his post on the first page? if he is, he needs to be educated.
sponsors are looking for fresh young skaters who can throw down a wide variety of tricks on different terrain. you cant just get sponsored by kickflipping massive stair sets (unless youre gay corey duffel)

and doing a 180 off a curb is nothing. garbage. pointless. as is kickflipping on flat, unless if its in a run that can make up for it...

Haha i just read this post. Right because you skate differently to others your gay? Because you do hammers instead of tech or vert etc your gay? Get the ****. And duffel id say is more sponsored for his handrails and hubbas, this guy needs educated.

By the time that i'll be skating at an advanced level, i'll be, like 29, so who wants to show feature old 29 year old dude in a video? LOL

I've got a question here, I am not sponsored and I don't think I want to be, but... I only do tech and flat ground pretty much so I'm pretty good at that (not trying to brag, I'm sure the majority of you are better than me) but what are the perks of being sponsored? I know you get free decks once in a while, but what do you have to do for them? I don't want to be sponsored, I think it adds pressure to a sport that's supposed to be fun, but do you guys think I COULD get sponsored if I tried?

I think most of those people who vote yes are exaggerating what "sponsored" means... to me it means a company sends you free merchandise for you to use so you can advertise their product. I think most people get a sticker from their local skate shop and consider themselves sponsored... it aint the same kids.

I'm not sponsored, not really close, but it annoys me that people make themselves out to be way more than they are... especially when I see some of their skate footy on here and I have to just shake my head...

you can't really say that you will never be good enough. The more you practice with skating the better you will get overtime. Which gives you a better chance of getting sponsored only if you are willing to keep on practicing and being positive realistically though.

As for myself. A shop has offered to sponsor me along with a couple of companies that are "Illenium" and "Blues skateboard products". I refused to be sponsored for the reason that I feel I have to get much better. I feel I have flaws in some areas in skating that I need to improve on. Plus the shop throws demo's here and there around locally and I want to be able to put up a show instead of being the only one in the team that kinda lacks behind some tricks. My intentions are to represent the shop as a good skater. My goal is to improve much better the next year or two and if I do improve. Then that would be awesome but if I don't I will keep on skating regardless whatever happens. I'm working at the shop for the moment so things are going quit well for me though :)

What shop? And who from Blues was going to sponsor you? Do you know Woody? He owns Blues and he used to run Project Orange skateshop, and he's over at Souldgrind in PB now.

no How good do u have to be to be sponsered

um actually its not about how many tricks you can do, local skateshops will sponsor you if you can jump good gaps or stairs, ollies might even be enough... it is all about how cool your photographs look at the end

for example i know a guy that cant kickflip or anything, but he can jump a 9 stair and he got sponsored

im trying to get sponsored by the end of this year

Naw and I'm not prepared to be. I just wanna be good for myself at the moment and do my school well for a good job later on, but if I'm really good and I have a good opertunity, I would take it, but I know its not a sport I would live off. I skate with the skateshop guys at my place so I know they can be free to ask me whenever they want. I just have to skate and it'll come...if I want.

Being sponsored isnt for everyone. I skate for the fun of it and am attending college and everything. Maybe if I was AMAZING i might think about pursuing skating as my profession.

No i'm not.

How does this sponsor thing work anyway? I know they give you free stuff as long as you skate for them and wear their stuff. But do you have to do anything ? Do you like represent them at comps or what ?
