Ok so I'm tired of people who say "Candles don't work. Get real wax like BAM wax," and whatnot. So heres a recipie for some pretty slick wax.

Ok so get a pan that no one in your family needs anymore. It won't ruin the pan, but it will be hard to clean. And please be careful so you don't burn yourself. Also, READ THROUGH ALL OF THE DIRECTIONS BEFORE YOU START!!! This will help prevent the emergency of 'omg I don't have that!'

If you want, you can add all of the ingrediants in a bowl before you put them in the pot. This will make it so the parafin has less of a chance of catching of fire.

1. Get some parafin wax. You can get it at any grocery store. Get a good chunk of it (maybe about half a cup).

2. Add about a tablespoon of baby oil.

3. Add about 2 tablespoons of vaseline (if you add too much, your wax will crack and crumble upon waxing. Don't make the same mistake I did).

4. OPTIONAL: Add half a crayon if you want color.

5. Add about a teaspoon or 2 of Crisco.

6. Mix them all up after they are melted.

7. Let the wax cool until its about to solidfy.

8. Pour it into some kind of mold. If you want to make a bunch of itty bitty ones, camera film containers work well. If you want a bigger hunk of skate wax, a pop can works well (Be advised, when it cools, there will be a large depression in the middle. Like a bowl. Thats normal. If you really want to get rid of it, wax something with that part first).

9. OPTIONAL: Take a flammable liquid and coat the outside of the finished wax. Light it on fire and blow it out quickly after. Some people say that makes it slicker. Try if you want.

10. Wax the hell out of whatever you want to grind and post up here how it works.

Experiment. Try adding other oil based items to your wax. Here are some ideas. Deodorant, chapstick, vegtable oil, some personal lubercants, soap, and lotions. Have fun.

Oh yeah, if you drop some food coloring in the wax when its cooling, it doesn't mix in. It stays in drop form and stays like that in the bottom. Its kinda cool.

Its a kind of wax. Just like plain, clearish-white, wax. Crisco is what people use to grease pans and stuff before baking.

Good find, FC_GB. Meh, I'm not the best speller.

Thanks to everyone else.

Awesome guide. For those who are waxing metal, maybe add some dry graphite into the mix? I don't know if it will actually slide better, but graphite is a good metal/metal lubricant.

Not a bad idea. It might be hard to keep the graphite evenly spaced through out the wax, but definitely a good idea.

Well, you can buy graphite as a "dry lubricant" and it comes in a powder. So as long as it's a powder you can just mix it all in.

Yeah, sure. Some tea lights or something. Experiment until you find something you like.

I'm not sure, but I think WD 40 is water based. So when you put it in, it will just sizzle and evaporate. I tried putting dish washing detergent in once and it just sizzled because its water based. I'm not sure what aisle it would be in , though. sorry.

If anyone is actually considering mixing in WD-40 with something they're about to mix on the STOVE, I'd urge you not to do it. :D

Great guide...parrafin wax is a good choice because it has one of the lower melting points (about 145 degrees Fahrenheit...the lowest is way more expensive, coming only from a certain type of berries, at 100 degrees fahrenheit) but it's still really cheap. Here's a link to some:

You can get everything on that list at a grocery store. In fact, you probably have most of this stuff at home.

WTF?
04-09-2006, 03:38 AM
parafin wax is a really common surf wax, so you can get it from any surf store, and its dirt cheap. i got about a handfull of it for $2.50 (AU) for my bodyboard.

awsome recipe, ill try this some time.

oh yeah, is crisco just a vegtable oil or something? if not, could you use vegtable oil instead?

Crisco is a grease that people use to lube up pans before they bake something so it doesn't stick. Yeah, I'm sure using vegetable oil would work fine.

The parafin is the most expensive part and is around $3 a pound. You probably have the other stuff lying around your house.

Compare this price with skate wax at $5 for 4 ounces, and you have a pretty good deal here.

To preserve the pan for later use with limited clean up, would aluminum foil help the wax not stick to the sides?

Maybe try some Pam No-Stik spray  .

It would be awesome if it worked though.

Just remember that some aluminum foils are coated in some type of resin to help it perserve freshness, and when it gets too hot it will burn/turn brown.

But I think normal foil would work fine.

Hello all....... cool site.

Yes paraffin wax alone will work just fine. This recipe looks cool. For me though 9 years of good ol dirt cheap paraffin has never failed me. In my experience paraffin will slick up a curb just as good and quick as the expensive name brand crap from your local shop.

Best thing is it usually comes in a box containing 4 bars, each being bigger than most single bars of wax you would find at your local shop and it will only cost like 3 bucks. Wax for days.

If you want, you can add all of the ingrediants in a bowl before you put them in the pot. This will make it so the parafin has less of a chance of catching of fire.

So I just throw all the ingridients into a bowl before they're cooked or anything and then into a pot? What temperature do you typically heat at? High, medium, etc etc..?

How would you/anyone reccomend that I clean the pot afterwards?

Well, I've tried making my own wax with half the materials. it didnt come out very well. I used a plastic container to hold it, I threw a match in there. I burned some paper and threw it in there so it would melt faster =/ but otherwise it looks cool xD

Just made it, and I strongly reccomend that you don't do the food coloring thing. You'll get a nasty suprise all over your hands while you're waxing a ledge. It can be a little soft, so be careful if its hot outside. Always put it in the shade, and store it in the fridge if you want. I might've used too much crisco though, so who knows.

Get mineral oil instead of baby oil.. It makes it smell weird with baby oil.

Just made the wax. Looks great, too. I added a green crayon, now it's green.

My mom, she had some paraffin wax on hands, so I got it for free. She's a manicurist or nail technician, or whatever you want to call it.

Next time, I want to try to add some scent to it. I don't know why, I'll just try.

CAREFUL!!!!! Mixing in metals and oils with heat can creat toxic gases that can KILL you. Do not do it.

ALSO, Put the wax into a double boiler or a bowl, then leave it in boiling water. Direct heat can cause fire, and that's not cool. This is seriously a dangerous endeavor, and it's really not smart to play chemist in the kitchen!

Here's a link to some:

http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/3636-AA.shtml

Actually, sorry to contradict you,

but only the vapors are flammable.

trust me. im a bit of a pyro maniac. :]

so if you want to,

make sure you are in a open environment away from any possible ignition source,

and spray it into some sort of receptacle such as a waterbottle or a bowl.

my recipie is more simple but ill give your a try. mine is just:
1. melt as many candles as you want in a pan
2. add shower gel
3. add vegatable oil
4. add a bit of vasaline.
5. mix it all up
6. add food colouring for colour (not too much else it will all just sink to the bottom)
7. put it in a container and then leave it in the fridge over night.
TIP: if you dont have a container you can use, get a coke can and cut it just before the rim at the top than use that

i had this perfectlike around 10cm in diameter metal lid and 7cm high which was perfect i would put the wax all in and put it on the electric grill and leave it there added oil crayons e.g then just left it there and wen i wanted to get it out i squezzed the edges and it slips out. But i lost it so i use a glass cup! and it does not break just dont put it in cold water really fast ill crack (explode i think)

Mine definitely did not work. I have been having serious trouble finding paraffin wax in Australia, so I used candles instead. I also did not add crisco as that is non-existant in australia, too.

Mine didn't slide at all and actually balled up if you tried to slide your board on it. Very sticky.

I'm not saying that candles don't work as a substitute for paraffin wax. Just that some candles definitely do not.

Looks like I am going to have to buy skate wax until I can find paraffin.

I've been making my own wax for years this way. Difference is, I use this candle-maker thing that melts the wax in a hopper and lets you drain it out into molds. Jell-o molds work really well, I've got some kick-ass bat and skull wax bars. Just add a shrink-wrap machine and print up some sticker labels, and you can hawk them off to the groms at the park for $1 apiece. Works like a charm. ;)

First, take your candle sticks and get a knife (an old one) and chop or shave it into small pieces. the smaller the peices the faster the wax melts and the longer you have to risk messing somethign up.

Then, take the pot and put a few centemeters of water in it. Set it on the stove and let it get hott. (don't use too much water or the tin will float and may tip over"

Then, put the shavings into the tin can and put the can in the hott water so the wax can melt.

Next, slice up some butter, deoterant, soap or anything else you want to make the wax super smooth. Be careful not to use too much or your was will be really soft.

Then put in the oils. this might be a little dangerous. because it may spash if your not careful. so watch yourself. It is very important not to use too much. or your wax WILL be as mushy as ice cream and never dry correctly. a few teaspoons should do a good job (deppending on how much wax you have in the tin)

Now stirr all this junk up and let it melt into one consistant fluid.

This is the semi-hard part. usually the tin can isn't very hott but just in case, use a pot holder to pick up the can out of the water. have your plastic mold ready. take the tin and container to a safe place and pour the liquid wax into the container (do not do this in the sink, bathtub, or anyplace inside your house, if the wax spills in your drains, it will dry and cost you tousands of dollars to repair, trust me) An empty deoterant container works really well because then you can screw out the wax lke a stick of deoterant and then cap it up when your done.

Let your wax harden over night or maybe even a day. don't put it in the freezer or it may crack and be in a bunch of peices. once its solid again your ready to skate.

Here are some quick facts about paraffin wax.
It melts at 145º F but don't heat it higher than 240º F or it will burst into flames.
Use a little Beeswax or Microcrystaline (sticky) wax to toughen it up a bit. On a side note I think it's hilarious that some of the people who posted say that this is too much work when it takes months maybe years to master the basics of skateboarding.

I bought a 10 pound block from Hobby-lobby :)

mr. awesome
07-05-2008, 11:57 AM
oh, heres one that i used awhile ago that was pretty tight.
youll need;
-gulf wax (stuff used for canning food, usually found in your grocery store)
-crayons, any color
-some good smelling spray stuff (like bath and body works spray, or lysol)
-tin foil/heat resistant mold
-a fire or very hot sun

mmmkay naww,
so get your tinfoil, get about a square foot of it, make it into a bowl shape, (or you can use any other heat resistant mold) now put 1 block of gulf wax, 3-4 crayons, into the bowl/mold.
and make a fire, and set it above it.
(or if its a super hot day you can just let it sit out in the sun)
so once it gets pretty soft, and starting to melt, spray that shiz with like 5-10 sprays of some good smelling spray/lysol.
now wait for it to get nice and totally melted. stir it up a bit with a spoon or stick or whatevers handy.
now set it somewhere to cool. and BAM! you get yerself sum mitty fine wawx!

i used this one a year or 2 ago.
it works beautifuly.
and the best part is that with the spray in it, it makes it a lighter consistancy, so you can just snap off a piece and put it in your pocket when your going skating.
go try it out
