By me, cause he's one of the worst rappers, like you said

He couldn't produce a good beat if my regard toward his musical efficacy depended on it! His lyrics are way too stale. And the guy can't go 3 seconds without using a simile. However, the incorporation of pi into rap lyrics is the coolest thing I've heard this year.
And finally, his entire reputation is built upon the shock value of one song.
DeadBlueSky 05-16-2006, 12:29 AM Roots Manuva is worth checking out in my opinion, some good quality underground UK hip-hop/rap
it is also worth noting that there is such thing as a bad genre of music, just music a person doesn't appreciate, i'm sure if a person listens to enough of each genre they will find at least one song in it that they like, be it rap/techno/metal/folk/whatever.
there is no good rap dawg.
...
i'll let you off this time, because you are just about old enough to try and rebel. you'll grow up if you are lucky ;)

You better watch what the **** flies outta ya mouth
Or I'ma hijack a plane and fly it into your house
Burn your apartment with your family tied to the couch
And slit your throat, so when you scream, only blood comes out
I doubt that there could ever be...a more wicked MC
'Cuz AIDs infested child molesters aren't sicker than me
I see the world for what it is, beyond the white and the black
The way the government downplays historical facts
'Cuz the United States sponsored the rise of the 3rd Reich
Just like the CIA trained terrorists to the fight
Build bombs and sneak box cutters onto a flight
When I was a child, the Devil himself bought me a mic
But I refused the offer, 'cuz God sent me to strike
With skills unused like fallopian tubes on a dyke
My words'll expose George Bush and Bin Laden
As two separate parts of the same seven headed dragon
And you can't fathom the truth, so you don't hear me
You think illuminati's just a ****in conspiracy theory?
That's why Conservative racists are all runnin' ****
And your phone is tapped by the Federal Government
So I'm jammin' frequencies in ya brain when you speak to me
Technique will rip a rapper to pieces indecently
Pack weapons illegally, because I'm never hesitant
Sniper scoping a commission controllin the president
The Devil crept into Heaven, God overslept on the 7th
The New World Order was born on September 11
his rap is top political^ but the lyrics are anything from "stale". yeah most of his beats arent the best but "crossing the boundary" has one of the best beats ever as well as "the 4th branch" and "no mercy". all his songs that dont involve politics (the few that dont) are really good.

I'll give you a lot of his beats are terrible, that's one of his biggest flaws. You have no basis for your stale lyrics comment though, he comes with with some rather witty metaphors and simile's ("Attempts to extinquish me don't even bother me none, like retarded kids throwing ice cubes at the sun"and discusses things not many people are willing to put out. He's far more determined and intelligent than most musicians out there and brings some very honest and true messages to people in his music. If you would like me to elaborate I could write paragraphs on the issue.
As for what I consider to be some good hip hop.....not gonna say much that hasn't been said, but oh well.
Aesop Rock
Cannibal Ox
Immortal Technique
Del The Funky Homosapien
MF Doom

Jurassic 5
The Fugees (The score wasn't bad)
The Herbaliser (Lots of groovy instrumentals)
Mos Def
Atmosphere
KRS-One (Some of his stuff is kind of lame, some of it is pretty damn good)

From what I've heard on the alums Revolutionary vol. 1 & 2, everything was a painful similie. Usually having something to do with pop-shock.

Theres tons of depth to his songs though. You can take most any given song of his and find a lot of topics most people are very ignorant of. He's real heartfelt and determined to get his message out. On bootleg albums you can tell him talking to people in more ghetto towns, tellin them stuff like don't hit / beat your wife and girlfriends, take care of your parents once you get yourself paid etc. He mentors young children and represents a lot of rebel factions fighting for their freedom, sort of like Rage Against The Machine did. He can be one of the more well-spoken people of his genre. Give some of his songs an honest read...here's an example. I don't think these are too based on shock value and stuff, though it is heavy on similes.
The voice of racism preaching the gospel is devilish
A fake church called the prophet Muhammad a terrorist
Forgetting God is not a religion, but a spiritual bond
And Jesus is the most quoted prophet in the Qu'ran
They bombed innocent people, tryin' to murder Saddam
When you gave him those chemical weapons to go to war with Iran
This is the information that they hold back from Peter Jennings
Cause Condoleeza Rice is just a new age Sally Hemmings
I break it down with critical language and spiritual anguish
The Judas I hang with, the guilt of betraying Christ
You murdered and stole his religion, and painting him white
Translated in psychologically tainted philosophy
Conservative political right wing, ideology
Glued together sloppily, the blasphemy of a nation
Got my back to the wall, cause I'm facin' assassination
Guantanamo Bay, federal incarceration
How could this be, the land of the free, home of the brave?
Indigenous holocaust, and the home of the slaves
Corporate America, dancin' offbeat to the rhythm
You really think this country, never sponsored terrorism?
Human rights violations, we continue the saga
El Savador and the contras in Nicaragua
And on top of that, you still wanna take me to prison
Just cause I won't trade humanity for patriotism
See what I mean? He's talking about the obvious hypocrisy of United States policy towards certain countries, how people altered religion for their own cause, blind patriotism coming into play in the US, Guantanamo Bay...all sorts of very real issues in our world. What he says seems so much more relevent to the world than things most artists are speaking about these days.
Flow like the blood of Abraham through the Jews and the Arabs
Broken apart like a woman's heart, abused in a marriage
The brink of holy war, bottled up, like a miscarriage
Embedded correspondents don't tell the source of the tension
And they refuse to even mention, European intervention
Or the massacres in Jenin, the innocent screams
U.S. manufactured missles, and M-16's
Weapon contracts and corrupted American dreams
Media censorship, blocking out the video screens
A continent of oil kingdoms, bought for a bargain
Democracy is just a word, when the people are starvin'
The average citizen, made to be, blind to the reason
A desert full of genocide, where the bodies are freezin'
And the world doesn't believe that you fightin' for freedom
Cause you ****ed the Middle East, and gave birth to a demon
It's open season with the CIA, bugging my crib
Trapped in a ghetto region like a Palestinian kid
Where nobody gives a **** whether you die or you live
I'm tryin' to give the truth, and I know the price is my life
But when I'm gone they'll sing a song about Immortal Technique
Who beheaded the President, and the princes and sheiks
You don't give a **** about us, I can see through your facade
Like a fallen angel standing in the presence of God
***** niggaz scared of the truth, when it looks at you hard
jesushadherpes 05-17-2006, 12:24 AM haha thats from the 4th branch isnt it^^? the opening beat to that is cool.

Poncho 05-28-2006, 09:21 PM Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock, MURS, El-P(awesome producer too), Blueprint, Cage, Kalashnikov (british rapper), Abdominal, Company Flow, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Mos Def, Talib Kwili, De La Soul, Jurrasic Five, Jungle Brothers, N.W.A., Public Enemy, Jam Master Jay, Grandmaster Flash, Kool Keith/Black Elvis/Dr. Octagon, MF Doom/Viktor Vaughn, Atmosphere (Slug + Ant), Eyedea + DJ Abilities, Handsome Boy Modelling School, Gorrilaz (as a compilation project ft. many different rappers), Buck 65, Sage Francis, Cannibus, Necro, Camu, Cypress Hill, Dead Prez, Wu Tang Clan, Immortal Technique, Jean Grae, Jedi Mind Tricks, Krumbz, Mr. Lif and the Preceptionists, Nas, Ill Bill, Notorious B.I.G, Dr. Dre, Tupac, Snoop Dog, World Class Wreckin' Cru and K-OS

Pimp through a hindu temple with a leather suit on
Stomp through a Japanese crib with muddy shoes on
Deacon the Villian, always misbehaving
In hospitals playing concentration with Alhzeimer's patients

I'm really like The Coup's "5 million ways to kill a C.E.O" and "Ghetto Manifesto"

RustyNail 07-26-2006, 06:23 AM I lived in the ghetto streets of Almere, where all houses look alike. And now I still live there, here actually. I was listening to ****** music and then I watched Bryan Hermans part in the Pharmacy Chily video, which has 'Three Six Mafia - Triple Six Clubhouse' as background soundtrack. I loved it, and thats how I got into rap.
Thats what I wanted to say :icon_boog
hmmm gives me an idea
How did everybody else start listening to rap/hip-hop
Rusty Nail just gave up his story, JHH wrote it in his MoM interview, what about everybody else?
RustyNail 07-26-2006, 03:43 PM yeah, how did you get into rap?
Stevie Hunt 07-26-2006, 04:08 PM i wrote how i got into rap alittle in a earlyer post, it was because of necro (not are lovable memeber but the rap artist, hehe) when i heard some of his work, it was amazing, i loved it, and also when he sung with other people like ill bill, that was amazing too, from then on i grew alot of respect for him..

my entrance to the rap world started with the song "Trying to Find A Balance" by Atmosphere.
It showed me not all rap is that MTV ****, some of it is worth listening to.
Then, I remember my cousin mentioning Aesop Rock, and I found the song "No Regrets", which in my opinion is a great song.
Then I bought the album Seven's Travels by Atmosphere.
Then The Mouse and the Mask by Dangerdoom.
After finding rap that i actually liked, i was inspired and remembered names I'd heard before, which is how I found Sage Francis.
It grew from there, and then i started this thread, used Pandora.com, and found even more stuff
I was introduced into rap on a good note actually. My dad bought me The Beastie Boys Hello Nasty cd when it came out. Since then I have been all about it. During high school I listened to more hardcore type rap because all the guys on my basketball team listened to it, so I like select mainstream rap too. About five years ago my friend introduced my to Del Tha Funkee Homosapien and I've been searching for more stuff like that ever since. Really glad my dad bought me that Beastie Boys cd.
jesushadherpes 08-01-2006, 03:38 PM yeah thank goodness for older teenage girls who think its a good idea turn a little kid onto dr.dre.
isnt that triple six clubhouse cut with bittersweet symphony.
I dunno, I just became more mature to music I guess. I used to only listen to crappy pop-rock, but around a year ago i started listening to everything. In the rap catagory i listen to NWA, Jurrasic 5, Ice Cube's older stuff, Kanye West (prolly not rap ^_^) and some Jay Z.
caveman1028 08-02-2006, 11:53 PM i personally think atmosphere is kewl. i like his song 'party for the fight to write' its a good song. phat beats yo

AH HA HA HA OH MY GOD HOW DID I NOT SEE THIS.
Wow this is the greatest post in the entire thread.
has anybody given GM Grimm a listen?
anybody?
stuff from wiki on him:
In 1994, Grimm survived murder attempts against him, being shot eleven times total. As a result, he was deafened, left blinded, and paralyzed from the neck down. Doctors predicted a bleak future for him, suggesting he would suffer nulled senses and be paralysed for the rest of his life. Grimm recovered full vision, hearing, and speech ability, but is still permanently confined to a wheelchair.
During his hospitalization, he wrote the now classic album Scars and Memories.
Facing narcotics and conspiracy charges, Grimm was sentenced to life in 2000. He paid a one-day bail of USD$100,000, recording The Downfall of Ibliys: A Ghetto Opera in those twenty-four hours. During his stay in jail, Grimm studied law. Filing many counter-suits, his sentence was eventually reduced to three years; he was released in 2003.
GM Grimm penned much of lyrics for Dr. Dre's The Chronic album and was originally meant to be featured on Main Source's "Live at the Barbecue" track, which holds the distinction as being Nas's first major appearance on record.
jesushadherpes 08-13-2006, 09:58 PM yeah he did alot of stuff for kool g rap i think. I just got a burned copy of "special herbs and spices" vol.1 and its pretty good. i liked scars and memories better. i still havent heard all of "Downfall of Ibliys: A Ghetto Opera" tho.

Yeah, I'm listening to it right now. It is kinda a bit different from their other stuff, but its what I expect from them. They have one song I love, Radio. It has a more main stream type beat. I love it when underground folks take that sound for their own. Also its just a good song.

Also I would buy the new Jurassic 5 album, but I would like to have it for the sake of having it. I would listen to it before buying because some people are having problems with it.

How do you say something about snoop, then say you dont have any idea about the genre?
I'm not supporting or dissing snoop, i'm just wondering here.
D Ice 08-23-2006, 01:49 PM Deep cover was written in the early 90's when snoop was a good rapper, i dont like him now cause his style of rap changed, thats all im saying
Lets compare Drop it like its hot or Deep cover?
jesushadherpes 08-23-2006, 02:43 PM snoop is legit by association with dre. same applies for eminem. anything dre touches goes platinum. dre is the man. i wish his album would come out already it was supposed to be out like 2 years ago but it keep getin pushed back.

He's good.
THe newest 7L and Esoteric cd is funky. It came out in June I think, but I like it. Anyone else heard it. Its called: A New Dope.
I don't have a problem with rappers like Snoop. Who wants to hear the same thing from an artist every album anyway? That would be boring.
Deep cover was written in the early 90's when snoop was a good rapper, i dont like him now cause his style of rap changed, thats all im saying

Answer my question, damn it.
i asked why are you saying something about snoop, then mentioning you dont know anything about the genre.
D Ice 08-24-2006, 10:36 AM yeah i have no idea about "underground" rap.
Let me refraise Im not familer with the whole "underground" scene.

I disagree...that's actually a good song. chamillionaire's got nice flow. one of the five poppy rap songs I like. Good song if you only care about the aesthetic pleasure of hearing a tight rap.

How did everybody else start listening to rap/hip-hop
Rusty Nail just gave up his story, JHH wrote it in his MoM interview, what about everybody else?
I've been quite the lurker of this thread. Before, I only had a very small slice of the good stuff like a bit of Andre Nickatina, Aesop Rock and Triple 6 Mafia only because of the skate videos they're on.
Now, all thanks to this thread, I'm into all of this:
7L & Esoteric
Hieroglyphics
Alchemist
Atmosphere
Aesop Rock
MF Doom
Sage Francis
Cannibal Ox
Deltron
jedi mind tricks
Immortal Technique
Andre Nickatina
Mac Lethal
Mos Def
De La Soul
Grand Buffet
The Arsonists
El-P
Blueprint
Swollen Members
Company Flow
Bun B
tonedeff
memphis bleek
Keny Arkana
Airborn Audio

Yep, this would have to be one of my favourite threads on the cafe'. I first posted before it was closed, then it closed but then I started to see it popping back up and I just kept coming back for more :D
Now all I have to go is find a shop who has some of the artists, I haven't seen much that I've liked here at all, or I could always buy from overseas.
Lupe Fiasco is amazing man...excellent music...excellent

sk8t3r 10-30-2006, 10:00 AM They're sellouts. 50 Cent is the worst rapper ever the only reason he's in the business is because he got shot 9 times.
sorry for bringing up an old topic, but i was looking at this and checking some artist and i saw this... i sortof agree, but its not the main reason. the real reason is because of Eminem, and Dre. I admit that i like that rap because of the beats, and i grew up listening to this stuff(Eminem, Wu-tang, dre). but aesop is much like the WU and aesop worked with wu. but im done and no one take this personally.

I assume you are referring to aesop rock. I would advise you to refer to him as aesop rock instead of just aesop because there is a guy called aesop. Aesop is a member of Living Legends.
Everyone should check out some Murs if they haven't. He is also from Living Legends, but is doing more solo work now I believe. Also check out his work with slug(rapper from Atmosphere), the have two cds together called FELT. One is a tribute to Christina Ricci and the other is a tribute to Lisa Bonet. They are good albums.

Kayce Shelton 10-30-2006, 01:52 PM Murs is a damn fine MC, but I prefer Living Legends as a crew to his solo work.
RustyNail 10-30-2006, 03:51 PM I like Chali 2na
Charisma 10-30-2006, 04:08 PM no, he just isnt.
When will people get that music is subjective, and statements like these are close-minded and ridiculous?
RustyNail 10-30-2006, 04:50 PM I think Soap was just stating his own opinion there^, I mean I could say the Rolling Stones are the best! While they literally might not be the best, you know.
FraJILeSoul 10-30-2006, 04:54 PM Word a dope thread, big ups to MF DOOM.But guess what?K-os cameback. His newest single is Eletrik Heat-The Seekwill,If I am not mistaken, his new album Alantis is out too...

Yeah, they've haven't got that many songs together that I know of. Actually I've only got a couple or so. I've got a bit of an Atoms Family mixtape, some stuff from 'Mixed Dosage II'. I recommend it, and I've only heard a fraction of it! I need to get more, myself.

I tried to rap and it was ok, but I'll just stick to making beats.

I cannot stand him, not the mention every rapper on the radio but he has to be one of the worst.

I haven't heard a ja rule song in a long time. Has he been making new songs recently or what? Not that I care really...:)
emenikmatis 12-17-2006, 06:53 PM Hah, me either. I wouldn't have a clue, but whenever I did hear him, it was terrible. :)
Ibanez 12-18-2006, 01:43 AM Speaking of Ja Rule a lot of people say I look a lot like him. As a rapper I like him also. I don't know if hes making a cd or not but hes into movies now.
emenikmatis 12-23-2006, 02:43 AM Really feelin' Grand Buffet at the moment, I like their stuff.

jesushadherpes 01-12-2007, 06:26 PM seriously i really hate easy e. his greedy ass is the reason NWA split up. just cuz hes dead doesnt mean you have to like him. I hate the way when Mc's die everyone is scared to criticize em.
arto-geoff 01-12-2007, 06:43 PM I like andre nikatina. But im not heavily into rap. I also like the songs i've heard by cunning lynguists, cool as ****.

Someone told me today "Rap is just ryhmes, and a beat most of the guys don't play".
True
Rap is essentially rhyming to a beat, but at the same time, rock is essentially singing to some instruments.
Technically, its right, but theres much more to it than that.
emenikmatis 01-19-2007, 12:16 AM My turn to post "how I got into rap"
Well, basically, this thread has influenced my music taste a whole lot. Before I read any of this thread, I barely liked any hip-hop/rap. I just thought it was all about the crap played on the radio, that I didn't like. After watching more and more skate videos, I found more artists I liked, who were rappers.
The first one that stood out the most, was Aesop Rock. I heard one of his songs on one of the first skate videos I watched. I loved it. Decided to download that song, and that's all I ever had for a while..then, as more I watched more videos, I found more artists such as Dead Prez and Hieroglyphics.
At this stage I only had a very small fraction of hip-hop that I have now. And, that was only last year or so..Now, thanks to this thread, I have found these great artists and they are definitly in my favourites. They are:
7L & Esoteric
Aesop Rock
Atmosphere / Slug
Cage
Cannibal OX
Company Flow
Deltron 3030 / Del Funky
Hangar 18
Hieroglyphics
M.F. Doom
Mos Def
Mr Lif.
Pigeon John
RJD2
Sage Francis
I also like a bit of
Andre Nikatina
Dead Prez
Grand Buffet
Jedi Mind Tricks
Triple Six Mafia
But the artists first mentioned is what I'm really diggin'.
Hooray for alphabetical order, too.
So, yeah, basically I have to give it up to this thread.
Thankyou
Bragas 01-21-2007, 08:45 PM ah man im totally feelin you emenkimatis.
alot of what hip hop is about is being able to share it with others. and this thread is great for that. i mean hip hop for me will forever be my deepest motivation in skating...and thats real right ther. its real cool seein otha cats have appreciation for such music... like you got ther...and give props to skating as well.
jesushadherpes 01-30-2007, 11:52 PM This is a scott storch and I'm a hot torch and gettin' money is my sport. thats bout the last song on the radio ive actually liked. r n b annoys the hell outta me
sonja 01-31-2007, 08:38 AM I'm not really into the whole rap scene but I met some great people in Barcelona who got me into Spanish rap. So lately I've been listening to SFDK and Nach Scratch. Really good stuff, you should all check them out. Especially these three songs:
SFDK - El Doctor
Nach Scratch - Compite
Nach Scratch - El Sexto Mandamiento
Really, really good songs. Check them out.
Occasionally, though, I do listen to some good ol' Beastie Boys and A Tribe Called Quest.
fullmetaldroogy 01-31-2007, 09:54 AM tribe called quest, gang starr, wu tang clan, big daddy kane, blackmoon, artifacts, pharcyde, krs one and boogie down productions, das efx, blacksheep, kwame, de la soul. These are just a few of my favourites, and they have more flava than any of the 50cent type crap of today. try them out bro.peace.
Vandatta 02-21-2007, 03:03 AM Gangstarr, best rap group ever.
NorCal Thrasher 02-21-2007, 10:10 PM i dont like rap all that much. who wants to pay somebody money to hear them ***** about being poor? not me...... but if you like it its your choice
FightFlyCrow 02-21-2007, 10:20 PM Been said a million times before, but there is more to rap than whats on the radio. Here is a bit from a Dead Prez song:
So real that the radio will never play it
But that's cool, the enemies supposed to hate it
Freedom ain't gonna come till we regulate it
That's why I'm in the dojo, not just for the video
Really do, we really got beef with the popo
Never know when they gonna put you in a choke hold
This is for you new niggaz holdin for the radio
Turn off the radio
Turn off that bull s***
This thread is still up and running?
Just to the new people
I'm no longer looking for suggestions
It kinda evolved into just discussion
