Straight letters are anything from Blockbusters (generally just called blockbusters or rollers) to what I did which are a modified straight, nothing special. Straights are just, well.. straight.

Block busters are a font, like the Hollywood thing...

Straights are usually straight like fonts, with little weird stuff....like no weird jumbles and messes. Just normal looking...like my Truth piece, or the Joke one...

Anything beyond that, or a time new roman font straight letter are not straights. If you start adding extensions you going away from straights. Get it?

Your letters are all different shaped and bad colors. Seriously. Look one post above yours and BITE THE LETTERS until you form your own style. Mess with those to form letters that you have and they don't.

The problem guys ok, Sev7n mainly is well I'm like outta colors lol....so those were just used to give it color. If I had more markers it coulda been better probably....but whats the matter with the letters. I'm confused...

Phillip fix your extensions.. multicolored extensions unless they're sort of like stars fading look like poo generally unless you're very good with the colors. Izi, do normal straights. Simples, like soap posted.

Simples at the most might have an outline. Don't put extensions. Yours are mad sloppy too.

Ok then I'll go back 70 pages....because all of your stuff, save maybe soap and fly! had stuff on here that was "crap" "embarassing" or not "up to quality".....we all have to start somewhere. And it's not cool to get on this place and down us all. Your letters are unevenly spaced, aren't the same thickness, the bars don't have the same width, and your 3D doesn't make logical sense, especially not on your C.

If you want my suggestions - stop doing 3D. Don't even really color your pieces (I know that does get really annoying though, so sure you can color some, but you should be churning out simples like nothing). You need to learn basic letter proportion. Check out the letters Soap posted, or even just the letters on your keyboard. You want to emulate those - proper proportion, etc.

Once you actually get the hang of drawing letters, you can start playing with 3D. It's hard for some people to get, but look at the C. Here's my suggestion for that - pick an angle, and get a ruler. Now draw half inch lines from every joint that's on your letters. It may be easy to just start with straight downward lines and 45 degree lines. Then just follow the curves of your naturally proportioned letters.

In fact, because there's so many toys here, I'm going to make a really quick tutorial and post it up here. It'll be quick, but it'll make sense hopefully.

Now I necessarily didn't say that piece...such as my truth piece, even Sev7n said he liked that, also you're comparing me to someone who's probably been tagging for years, or at least longer than my 3 weekish..

Now I admit it will take a long time, but just as long as you guys...and being embarassed by people who will take on the new stuff, is kinda evil in sense. But whatever...

And the reason I do 3d, is because I do a crapload of it in Art and I'm pretty good at it, so I decided just to incorporate it....now here I just did two throws...what about these? (I did this before you said no color, no 3d)..

^It's common sense, you need to have a trail leading from the inner dots to the outside letter, otherwise it's impossible to have a floating dot. There are literally hundreds of stencil making tutorials on the internet. Use the resources you have, and FIND one of them.

Yeah those were just doodles, I just wanted to see if you guys like it, I'll take some of those and put them into real works. Especially since I did them with Pen, and fast in class, they're not the best.

1=like alot, but looks a lot like a graphic-logo thing more than a tag.

4=Like the R and thats it really, the A is cut off, though I do like the background on it.

The sike thing is pretty cool, nice little style on it.

The next 7up is my favorite, really no problem there, just color, and work on perfect lines.

The next Real is a little sloppy, and I still only really like the R, and the E a bit, the A and the L need work(L is too thick on the bottom) and the A is too sketchy.

the last one is a cool concept and design, just the letters need work, the only almost perfect letter on there is the D.


I'd say pretty good overall, just work on straighter lines, and a little more style.

For all the others - go simpler. The letters look horrible because you're trying too hard to add fancy add ons and bends and the like.

Well the last one is just a doodle piece. I know you all would probably turn it down. But beside that, wtf are you talking about. The other simples I did people liked. And number 2 picture, seemed almost perfect. Beside maybe a few wobbles, maybe. But the 3d is fine and I DID THE BARS THING. How is it THAT COMPLEX. It's not, at all. You do the bars, then have a vanishing point, and do lines towards it for 3d.

The first one I don't like a lot cause it's a little wobbly, but beside that what is the problem, people said that simple was fine, when I did it before.

And this Capo one(2nd pic), as I said before is pretty good, but it's like my Truth one from a while ago, and I got some praise for those.

The second picture, if I didn't know you wrote CAPO, I would have assumed it said CAEO, with a badly done E instead of the P, because of how you've bent the P. That's what I mean. Don't try and bend your letters yet. Stand them all up straight. Slant them all one way. Maybe slant them in alternating directions. But don't start playing with actual letter structure until you've got a solid understanding of how letter proportions and flow work. You don't have to get rid of the 3D, but fix your letters!

Third picture - this one's actually okay. Nice basic throwup. I think the P and the C are kind of ugly though. And the O doesn't seem situated correctly either - play with that.

Fourth picture...where to start? Letter height and thickness, again. That's a major part, and it's why all the experienced cats tell toys to go simple, so you can develop an understanding of how letters work. Lose every single extension on every letter - they don't flow and detract from the piece. The 3D is fine, don't worry about that, and the outline/goo deal is pretty solid as well. Lose the quotes, it's one of the marks of a toy, or a king. Same with crowns. If you're not a king, you shouldn't be using them. Finally, the patterns in the 3D distract the eye and are just straight ugly - they make the piece appear way too busy and discombobulated. Lose them.

Those are the problems with your pics. Just cause people you show your pieces to 'like them' doesn't mean they're good. Not many people are remotely educated about graffiti, and stuff like the last picture may get a 'wow that's cool' from a few members of the public, but anyone who's actually into graffiti will want to cry.

Hahaha, it's all good. You can do simples with 3D, but the simples help you understand/learn proper letter proportions and structures, which in turn help you create letters that actually flow.

Yeah ahah I don't even know why I posted it, I don't even like how it looks.

But how do you do rounded letters with 3d then?....and there not too bubbly so I didn't think it mattered much. I do the rounded because it looks much better in my opinion than hard edge tall simples....

I suggest at least getting the hard edge simples because they'll help with your letter structure - currently your P is really off because of the rounded edges and the like.

I have to say though, I did literally hundreds of simples before I really even started bending my letters. That's the down and dirty that no one in the graff world really tells you.

Izi, that piece is way better, I like it.
But keep working on your 3D.
The 3D on the C is pretty weird, down the bottom of it the 3D is bigger than down the side. If you know what Im saying, its hard to explain over the internet.

Gloria, its good. Some of your lines are a little shaky though and I personally dont like how it curves to stay in the page. (Even if it wouldnt fit, its just my thoughts XD). Good work though. =]

BUT.
If it says ZULU, then..

1) The connection between the U and the L make it look like ZUZU.
2) The extension beneath the last U makes it look sorta like a Y.

Yeah I'm aware of that extension on the last U making it look like a Y. I tried to curb that a little bit by extending the U's lower line through most of the extension part. I'm not really seeing the problem with the extension on the L, but that's quite possibly because 1) I drew the thing, and 2) that's how I do all my upper case L's when I write cursive.

As for markers, I normally use Prismas, but I killed my red, and they bleed too much to do the yellow, so I used these things called 'Art Markers,' which I got from the local Michaels. They're double tipped and super sweet - like Prismas but...less bleeding and firmer, so it's harder to do nice fills with them (big fills that is). As for the black, I used just your regular Uniball Fine ballpoint pen for that.

I just noticed this but... how come the ink color is different at some parts? I would expect that the blue shows better and more of the original color at the direct paper-on-scanner area rather than on the side where the rings are because the rings lifted some of the page up from the screen, do you guys see that? the lighter blue on the G and the R in Graphic? That blue is supposed to be the original color =/ the other blue just looks bad to me. What's even weirder is that the wheel I drew next to "lala" is the same blue color AND it was directly on the paper part that was actually on the scanner. This pen is weird and has color changes =/ this is pretty confusing for me.

and christian. are those art markers the ones that come in i believe an 18 pack, they have a short cap on the fine point and a long cap on the chisel tip and they're black in the center and have the gray text that say art marker? because i have those. i hate them, haha.

Well they do come in an 18 pack plastic case, but the text is more silver than grey. But otherwise, yeah. Why do you hate them? They're pretty solid if you use them right.

Erm, well I dont know many girls who graffiti (well actually just two lol) but I like it alot, just looking at graffitis on big walls and tags, although I dont like tags on house walls and that kind of stuff very much.. around here there are loads and it makes the city look dirty (I like tags, just in places where they dont disturb).

Anyway as I quite like graffiti when I'm bored I try somethings myself, although its not much, usually I dont even finish them or colour them. But I enjoy it alot and I'd loooove to do my own piece some day, but I somehow cant picture myself hahah.

There's way too many wack writers who don't follow the original graffiti regulations. No writing on private property, stick to the public spots. No writing on trees, that's just stupid. Challenging locations only, none of this easy obvious spot bs. I see every rule broken driving around town, and most writers have the most poorly developed styles to their letters. I mean, don't write if you don't have any calligraphic skills or style with the can. Not to mention the idiotic scribers ruining every piece of glass possible. Piecers I can dig. Writers are worthless.

Ok the color on the truth one seems perfectly fine, its a cool color palet, with orange stars, wth is the problem with stars?

And on the 01.20.09 one I use extensions to show something that looked like a hole for the hole in the numbers, I thought it was used well.

Next time I'll use like 2/3 colors, but if there wasn't the stars in the Truth one it'd look fine(I like the stars, but it does clutter a little).

I did this, DON'T KILL ME...it's not a simple, but kind of like one with extensions, I saw this style on like 30 people on bombing science, but I'm not biting, all the extensions and whatnot are my ideas, just the letters are like those of this same style....also the colors are a little more compelling...

izi, in your truth one i think you should get rid of the green, it doesnt blend well with the orange or yellow. but besides that it looks pretty good.

as much as i don't like your hands, it's a start. keep developing with that.

my boy's letting the paint marker dry so he doesnt smear it then hes doing the outline so flicks up in a few.

yea, i know they are bad... im trying to get the arrows and stuff to look good, and to work on different letter styles

anything but arrows.. and if you do them, only one at a time. haha.

yep i used a tablet
it was a caligraphy brush, i think 20 thickness diagonal brush in photoshop

Well, not necesarily the legs.
No offence, but I find it hard to believe someone at your skill level doesnt know what bars are.
I did a little tut for you on what bars are. This is how you should draw letters [not necesarily simples like in this tutorial, but you should get the point] :

Yeah thats what I was trying to say, that the letters made the colour look too full and not that good. Izi I think your letters should have more space for each one, and maybe a bit wider, cause they look like they've been pushed together or something.
