View Full Version : Old School Kids (a pictoral of extreme skateboarding)
glidenhi 02-04-2007, 12:22 AM This thread was inspired by all of you guys, because of who you are...and because of your friendship with each other and with me. OldSchoolKid encouraged me to do it....so....I have used his name in the title.
I have been collecting pictures of skateboarding for about three years now....since about the time I decided to start skateboarding. They have encouraged me to keep expanding my limits...until I have become somewhat acceptable at the art....and the sport...that we love. I am going to share them with you. Keep checking back....because this will take some time....for all of us.
Some of these pics (and in some cases, videos) are historical.....all are inspiring.... they reflect something of who you are.....the spirit of skateboarding....by which we are all bound together in friendship.
This thread is open for comments and for you to add your own favorite pics of anyone....including yourselves.
I hope you enjoy these as much as I have.....and will.
I'll start it out with a tribute to the z-boy that personifies "no fear" and "no limits"

For the record most of these pics were taken by Glen Friedman and Craig R Stecyk III, both amazing photographers (Glen Friedman has definitely been one of my main role models for years now), just in case someone here would be interested in their work and would want to google search their names.
http://www.z-boys.com another cool link
This is indeed a great thread that will hopefully inspire a lot of people and make them want to go skate glidenhi, for the record it personally got me pumped  So I'm going to go skate now.

Old park, used to be in Olympia, WA. Now it's buried under the concrete of a cold storage wherehouse. Rumor is they just filled it in with dirt and paved over it...so it might still be there...

glidenhi 02-04-2007, 10:04 PM Great stuff.....guys!!!! I'm back.....took some middle and high schoolers out skating today. One of them.....David (age 15).....asked me to post a pic of him skating his first bowl...at Concrete Wave Country in Nashville....so here it is. David is a magician at street...and this looks pretty good for a bowl newbie:
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/ocooper/David1.jpg

Ok....back to history. Here are some pics of Get-A-Way Skatepark in Huntsville....circa...late 70s...early 80s. They tore it down in the early 80s. Some of you "old guys" have seen some of them...but I'm putting them up again for the rest.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/ocooper/getawayA-2.jpg
the pro shop:
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/ocooper/getaway7.jpg
the keyhole:
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/ocooper/keyholeparty.jpg
I asked the oldtimers on the SkateAlabama forum to tell me about this pic and the park...and this is what they said yesterday:
Buddy Rawls:
big pool session:
Kurt jose skating, kevin mcmahan standing on the coping deck, mark tidwell and greg williams with the matching do's, chris byrd with the lightning bolt helmet, tom Payton (75% sure) with red protec, paul Gierow no shirt. Cant determine who is cut out partially.
Actually warren, there was a decent amount of people skating. they bulldozed it while the cramp ramp was being skated, and before it got moved to shane's in 5 points.
if you have to ask why it was torn down, then you are pretty uninformed on late 70's and early 80's skateboarding and the parks. only about 4 cement parks in the whole country made it thru the 80's. lack of media, lack of support, sky rocketing liability, and the mainstream could not keep up with the progression of the late 70's. It basically fizzled out. only the medium to hardcore skaters made it thru, before the mid 80's newbies jumped in on it.
Warren:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buddy - I remember well when the Get A Way was bull dozed, I never quit skating until the mid 90's. My first reference was when it actual closed, when it was bull dozed the scene was picking back up and the summer before it was bull dozed a group of us were cleaning the 85 degree bowl when the owner showed up, it was on Easter day and we spoke to him actually about the growth of skating and he let us skate that day until it began to snow... that is the only snow in April I can ever remember, he gave us a ride back to our car. I can't remember who all was there, I think it was myself, richie, eric, gary, and ?. Eric, Richie and myself worked out a deal with him and he let us clean up around the park in exchange for riding, that was short lived something happened and that ended that. I think it was bull dozed not long after that for office space. You are right thou there were numerous reasons for closing I was simplifying. The bowl in Huntsville looks like alot of fun as ssoon as it warms up some I plan to come up and skate, I just got a new setup.
Here's a pic of Buddy Rawls.....back then...and he still rules today:

choker.....after that conversion you went through a while back...I think I owe you one......you made my day...in more ways than one.
You have the heart of another skater I know through a mutual friend (and I don't mean that in any religious sense of the word). He recently sent a piece of personal artwork....from jail....to his longtime friend, and fellow Z-boy...Wes Humpston...the owner of Bulldog skates and skateboard artist.
Here is a pic of it. Wes was pretty moved by it, and posted it on his forum:

Hi....Bandana.....I think your dad took all the best shots and posted them on his webpage and to the Bulldog forum. My camera has a delay that drives me crazy. .....but I'll send you everything that I have....just to make sure.
Hope you get to go to Kona to the big jam at spring break....our money is real tight right now....but we'll see.
Thanks for the encouragement! You are the skaterboys' hero. They say that pic of you on the coping is the best one they have. I made copies of all the pics and gave it to them. I gave them all the hard copies and have to make some more for me.....so I'll do the same for you.
Friend....if you don't mind...I'll use this post to continue the picture gallery. I won't try to categorize these pics, but will try to identify who it is if I can.

drizzle 02-06-2007, 09:32 PM If you want, you can give ME that z-flex....
I could always use another board in my collection. It's starting to look a little shabby....
glidenhi 02-06-2007, 09:40 PM nice pics man.
Thanks....L-H and ZooCork!!!........and thanks to all of you that have looked and added and talked and made this thread so much fun to do. Keep it alive by skating and adding pics and vids....and have fun!!!
Before I trail off.....just a funny thing or two about becoming a grom at age 58. When I first went to Huntsville skatepark it was easy to see I was different in not a few ways. None of the kids use pads or helmets.....heck....they probably couldn't even afford it if it was "cool"....and when I would come out and pad up they were probably saying to themselves......"hey this must be some rad old school pro...let's watch." Then I would fall on my arse about five times and the revelation would hit them. They probably would have laughed...but I was so old they probably wondered what they were going to do if I didn't get up...hahahah!!!
About a year after I started, I was at the Mall of Georgia at the Vans skatepark, and crashed off a ramp so hard head first that I knocked myself out and separated my right shoulder. I was only out a second but opened my eyes....and looked up to see something like this:
........"Mr.........are you alright???!!"
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/ocooper/avatars/general%20pics/peterpanscrew.jpg
It's no secret to me that I still stink the parks up.......but guys.....I just got tired of you having all the fun!...and I love skateboarding.....and I'm a lot better than I ever thought I would be. As far as I know....there's only one thing funner than skateboarding.
My friends at the Pinkneyville park in Gwinett (Atlanta) made a video of them and included me....and they asked if it was ok if they made a big issue out of my age. Well.....my gut said "no"....but my heart said "yes." It doesn't show me doing much ....my performance in the snake run and the bowl must have looked really bad....or they would have shown that too.....oh well.....at least they wanted me in the vid.

This thread have way more than enough motivation for me to go out and try my best...
I can still remember the day I was comparing how high my kickturn is...which ramp can we drop in, who did this trick first, who does it smother and such:icon_woow
I have realised sometime ago that each skater have their own individuality that is special in some sort of way. But most stereotype them to emo skaters, posers, gothic, punk and such. Heck, I sometime get caught up in it too. It was implemented into minds somehow like a 2nd nature or something.
But I try my best to to just accept their 'skating' and not 'clothing' anymore. Sometimes I feel like skating alone, sometimes I feel like skating with my younger brother. Other times, I just skate...I'm still trying to learn some technical tricks so I have more choices of places to skate.
So I hope this year yields better results for tricks.
Thank you for reading,
Michael

nuthead 02-07-2007, 07:45 PM @Baller......yeah.....the winter is depressing.....we need to move to where Michael is!!............
The only concern here is Rain and rain. Oh and maybe the scorching sun. But it's on the colder side lately. But be prepared for there is only THREE complete concrete skatepark in my whole country. Only ONE is great.
One, the one I'm currently riding. Only banks, a quarters. No pools or round wall.
Two, round wall, fully painted, very dusty, secluded. 4 hours min away from my current skatepark.
Three, a real classy skatepark just about to open. 4 1/2 hours away from my home.
But skatepark three is my dream park. Look here (http://www.skatemalaysia.com/ShahAlamXPark.html). I have been dreaming of riding pool and bowls since I saw some vids on it. I am now targeting that skatepark.
But now, I have to get some airs to bring to that awesome park. It is even equipped with an oververt that I tought would NEVER make it into Malaysia. Now I'm like this :icon_drib over the park...
Practice time.

ps: That old man in the link is the man I'm grateful for because he brought that wonderful park to our 'mostly' unrecognized skate scene.

A message to the "old guys"............if you ever see a kid like Mike.....with a deck in that kind of shape.....please....buy them another one.
Here's one I took off a grom at the Vans park in the Mall of Georgia (click on them to make bigger):
http://www.kodakgallery.com/BrowsePhotos.jsp?&collid=185927670106&page=1&sort_order=0
In case you're curious about how it happened.....here's the whole story (posted to another forum):
Hi....guys,...if you click on the above link, you will see one of the most amazing quivers ever. Click on each picture to get the full effect. I took this deck off a grom at the Vans Skate Park in the Mall of Georgia. I was able to talk him into accepting a new deck in exchange for it. When he accepted my gift despite his shock, skepticism and caution.....: he made me a very happy man. I think this joy is going to last me a long time. Believe it or not....he had apparently for some time been doing his best at skating a pool with it.....as well as the other challenges the park had to offer. I remember some of you giving out skateboards to some kids in the past. Thanks for the example.
If you are interested in the details, read on. They are pretty amazing too:
It was the day after my injury at the same park. We had to return, because my trip to the emergency room had interrupted my wife's purchase of a new dress for my son's wedding. I didn't want to watch her try on dresses so I went back to the park to watch the skaters.
I was walking around the back side of the park, the other side of the fence that separates the skaters from the lookers, when two young groms (apparently ages 13 and 12) yelled to me and motioned to come around a little more. When I got to where they were, I saw that there was a gap in the fence at the floor and a ragged skateboard had scooted under it to my side. I said..."Oh!....that's what you guys want......Oh!!!...Wow!!...you really got the goodie out of that deck, didn't you?!! "Yes sir"....the younger one replied as he took it, and seemed a little embarrassed.
I watched the skating a while longer, and while returning to where my wife continued her shopping I couldn't shake the picture of that skateboard. I said to my self..."any kid that rides a deck that long needs some help getting a new one." But how could I approach the kid without scareing him?
I had to try.....turned back and watched again, but it seemed too awkward to call the kids from the fence without scareing them. After one more false start back to the shopping, I went into the park's store and spotted a sign that offered a shop board for $35.00. I asked the older clerk which board was the shop board. He led me over to the wall opposite the large sales desk and showed me a row of choices with width and color options. I lingered, and then he called to me from the desk...."is this your son you are buying the deck for?.....as I turned around to face him, I instinctively said "no".......but in turning saw the 13 year old holding the ragged deck. I knew then.... it was supposed to be....so I approached him directly asking...."young man, is that your deck?......"yes sir..." he replied...with some caution. Then I noticed the other clerk had brought out, at the kid's request, some cast-off decks that had been replaced by new ones; and was offering one of them to the kid for $2.50. They had major splits on the front.....were pitiful.
I spoke to the kid again......"Look....I'm leaving town today, and you're never going to see me again. Will you let me buy you a new deck?" He gave me a long look mixed with shock, caution and disbelief... and with some encouragement from the store clerk,.... all he could get out was a nod. I explained I was an old school skateboarder, and had friends around the world like me that also loved skating. He asked why I wasn't skating, and I explained about yesterday's injury. He didn't thank me then, but went back to skating on the old deck....waiting in line for his work to be done at the desk. Then at a signal, he came back; and on his way....and with a completely softened countenance.... said to me...."Sir....I can't thank you enough for the new board." "Just have a lot of fun, young man", I replied....."I started skateboarding about a year ago, and I've never had so much fun in all my life!...." He thanked me again as the board was being refurbished, and I asked if I could have the old deck...."I figure when my wife sees I spent the money it'll help if I show her how bad you needed a new deck." He gave me a careful smile and an ok, and went back to the desk. I looked over his shoulder and saw him give the clerk two or three bills for the addition of a small iconic cross, which was being cut into the middle of the grip tape.....an apparent expression of his faith. I hadn't, to that point, noticed a similar cross in the middle of the old deck. By this time I had retrieved my BDS Quad11 Tailgunner from the truck, and showed him and his friend. They exclaimed....."that's so cool !!!......"I'll bet it's fast!!!
Five minutes later, while I was sitting next to the fence watching the action he came up from behind me with the completed skateboard and a final "thank you, sir".....and skated off to join his devoted freind. It was then I realized the two had been taking turns riding the worn-out deck.....and believe me.....it was a balancing act. It was my time to leave. "have a good summer, young man............."

Hi....stacyk....sorry to hear about the bad break. Hope you heal up real good....real fast. What kind of skating do you do......and what were you doing when you smaked?
Ya.....I just started three years back. What took me so long?......well...I guess I was able to supress my rebellion for a few more years than you guys. That...and there was no such thing as a skateboard in Alabama until the seventys.....and by then....Viet Nam distracted me. My sons were skateboarders, snowboarders, wake boarders, fruitbooters, and skimboarders. I thought fun was for kids and work was for dads. I missed out on so much. Now I can skate with my sons....and with the other younger skateboarders in my life. Life is good!
Oh....here's a poem for ya', stacyk......and for all of you guys.....I wrote it for my friend in New York named Bender...but it applies to you too...take care of yourself:
The Bender
Look at him.
He glides...pops and bends...
He leans into space, and pushes the limit..
..but look how peaceful he seems....
What is he thinking....what hurt is he resting from?
He falls ..... holds his head for a while...then gets up and swallows the
pain.....and on he goes.
Some of what he does pushes the bounds of my reality.
Some of what he is pushes the bounds of my reality.

stacyk 02-11-2007, 07:34 PM i love the top one in the last lot, looks full text book peralta with the hair in full flight, i can do a nice frontside slide like that with only one hand then crouch and grab the nose on they way down the bank, back side ones i do spin 360 and 540, but the front side one gets many more props, and the little kids are holding their mouths saying, wow he must be old... i love it
re: how'd i smack, i was just setting up in the little half pipe, looking around to see if i had a clean run back out over the hip, went from back smith into back lip (lack of coping) into back flip broken arm

I was in a contest at the Sprinker skatepark (bad park, horrible design, worst organized contest ever) and he was one of the "celebrity" judges. I didn't even place because all they cared about was street skating while I was blasting airs.

Sky: I've gotten a lot of friends to start skating. I got my brother Chad to start skating. I got my brother Josh back into skating. I've gotten so many people into skating—I can't think of all of them. But they all love it. I usually just share the history of skateboarding to people. They say, "That's cool, I want to try this."

Dude, this thread is epic. Probably one of the all time best of this site.
Just a quick question, on the first page gildenhi you said something about a park in Oxford. Where is the Oxford you are talking about.
Also the park in Nashville, Concrete Wave Country, it looks amazing. I wanted to go see a concert last summer and go check it out. We decided not to though. :)

yeah, if i remember correctly, the Brewce guy who founded Skateopia started in Florida and got kicked out. then he tried again in West Virginia and got kicked out. and then he finally moved to Ohio where he is today.

OldSchoolKid 02-16-2007, 10:28 PM Hey! Those photos are from my hometown, TACOMA WA! The 1/2 pipe was in my neighbors backyard, the owner was Mr. Mark Bader. He's rad and still skatin' today. The bank to curb spot is the North Star Glove warehouse. My dad used to skate there all the time, he said that they'd sometimes get 30 or so people there on summer days!
I saw those photos when they were on display at the Kickstand Cafe in Downtown Tacoma a few years back when the photographer just started displaying them.
All those old boards are somewhere in my city...I have to find them!

a sticky is a thread that will never go away, ever. it will always remain at the top of the page, probably until the site is shut down for good. also, here's a picture of me skating in Philly that i haven't posted yet. i only attempted going this way, because the other side of the set was directly into oncoming traffic. i almost got hit by a car anyways, but that's another story.

nuthead 03-08-2007, 03:48 AM nuthead, what are typical skaters like in Malaysia? are they DGK Hip-Hoppers? or Hesh Kids in tight jeans? or oldschool like you?
There aren't much young-ish people here on my little island. The skate scene here consists mostly of old-is working people. No dressing competition among us youngin's...But some wear baggy-er clothes.
I just take my shirt off due to the temperature around here...Humid. Most skaters do. Me? I wear my older, slightly scraped jeans and shirts to skate. Casual and skating never meets mostly.
its such a crazy big box ramp! almost kinda scary lookin. and some other pics you have posted of him on giant QP's and stuff, asian skateparks must be oversized or something.
The only skatepark rated 'oversized' in Malaysia is the park on Penang Island.Big and steep. Lots of speed but not much lines.
Anything else you want to know? Just ask.
I am going to skate the very first pool, bowl skatepark in Malaysia this weekend!!! That is also going to be my virgin experience on rounded transition versus straight, halfpipe transition...WOOHOO!!! Stoked!

Captain Amazing, as for the scab eating, I'm sure he's dead or dying. That was a quite dirty pool compared to all the cleaner hepatitis free ones.

Well yeah pretty much.He skates hills, ditches, parkinglots, and ramps thats about it.He can't really Ollie. He can get about a centimeter of air on them but he will not actually pop the tail.He only does it on carpet too.I want him to learn some stuff getting off the ground a little bit. So he can skate everything that I do.Well almost. He wants to learn some street but he is too scared he dont want to get hurt again. Plus he has to wait till after April 15th to get hurt.We are going to Jacksonville Florida from the 12th of april till the 15th.lol Cant wait.We are meeting up with some of the oldschoolers from the Bulldogskates forum.I really can't wait. How'd you know he was my dad?just curious?

Bandana 03-17-2007, 07:11 PM YEAH my spring break is pretty much over. We got till monday.YEAH I cant wait till Kona.My dad ordered some of the jam shirts this morning. How many guys are you planning on bringing to Kona?I dont think we ARE bringing any since it is so far away and we are leaving and driving up during school.SOMe peoples parents would not let there kid skip and go skateboarding with a friend 10 hours away.
Old Fat Guy 03-17-2007, 09:48 PM It is NOT skipping!
It is a field trip with alternative learning methods designed around interaction with individuals who have a great deal of historical knowledge about early methods of self expression.
