View Full Version : Beer Thread! Woohoo!
Pathtek4 05-09-2007, 07:43 PM side note: It just dawned on me, we have no beer thread in the over 18 section, for shame ;) lol!
Anything beer is good conversation in here.
What do you like? What's your favorite?
Home brewing? Tried it, made it?
You get the idea...
DRINKING MOVIES!!
Animal House to me is the all-time drinking movie! Belushi helps carry the movie one beer drinking frame to the next, awesome!
Personally, I'm a Coors Light type if I want to last the night, and keep having a good time without worry of next morning headaches :icon_drun! But, majority of the time, i'm drinking Yuengling Lager! Made here in PA, so its a nice taste of 'home'' :)
Recently though, i've had this beer called ''Magic Hat'' and WOW is it good!

AntiHero777 05-09-2007, 07:57 PM The best beer I've ever had was Presidente, I loved it. I first had it a little bit ago when I was in the Dominican, the kept calling it "the Dominicans finest" and they wern't lying. :D
FightFlyCrow 05-09-2007, 07:58 PM I do not know if they have it that far north, but if you can I would suggest you check out Lion's Head.
Dr_Feelgood 05-09-2007, 07:59 PM I dont know if you have this in America or if its just Australian, its called Tooheys extra dry and its by far the best beer ive ever tasted. Now saying that i havent had ALOT of beer but enough to realise that Tooheys Extra Dry is my favourite.

NorCal Thrasher 05-09-2007, 08:59 PM i prefer the sierra nevada ale myself. i know, im totally white trash LOL

bear fest woop, and miy favourite beer would be miller. A bit to much a i say i have 1 kidney now lol
freedumb 05-10-2007, 06:04 AM guinness draught / guinness extra stout
murphys stout
boddingtons pub ale
^^generally the only beer i buy.
Reno_Rotary 05-10-2007, 06:38 AM You Australians and your dry beer, jeez. And I've never understood the "light beer" thing either. If I was conserned with being healthy I wouldn't be drinking in the first place.
I'm personally a fan of the dark, thick beers, the ones that scare girls and make them go back to wine coolers.
Dr_Feelgood 05-10-2007, 07:28 AM ^ You will obey the Tooheys Extra dry, not because you want to but because you have to.
Roboman 05-10-2007, 08:29 AM I dont know if you have this in America or if its just Australian, its called Tooheys extra dry and its by far the best beer ive ever tasted. Now saying that i havent had ALOT of beer but enough to realise that Tooheys Extra Dry is my favourite.

Tooheys is pretty good, nothing special though. The only reason I buy Carltons instead is because of the questions under the bottle caps. In Tassie we used to always get Boags or cascade of course. Boags was cheaper, but cascade was better to drink.

My favourite is definitely Crownies though. I like them even more than Coronas. Expensive, but so worth it occasionally. Really crisp taste to it.

Its funny to think that some people from other countries think Australians drink fosters. That stuff is just export so they don't stock it anywhere that I've seen. I have never tried it but I've heard its not very good, which is probably why its export.

The only reason I have bought Fosters is because of the huge cans it comes it. Generally I drink Miller High Life, Harpoon or 40s of Malt Liquor
I'm not a heavy beer drinker, I'm not much of a fan of alcohol on the whole but the one beer I actually did like was sapporo, that japanese dealie.
Customgriptape 05-10-2007, 09:40 AM The only reason I have bought Fosters is because of the huge cans it comes it. Generally I drink Miller High Life, Harpoon or 40s of Malt Liquor
I can't drink fosters out of a bottle, but I think it tastes great out of a can (don't know if it gets light struck easily or what, but it's night and day for flavor).
Dogfish Head has the best IPA ever created, and a few other micro brews that are close to equally amazing.
http://beer.themanroom.com/images/beers/news/26d.jpg
Sam Adams is probably my favorite big name beer. Leinenkugel has a pretty small distribution area, but they're another of my favorites.
http://www.ibcbeer.com/beverages/leinenkugelhoneyweiss.jpg
Flying Dog's Old Scratch Amber Lager is a very close second to Sam Adams as lagers go. Not nearly as hoppy, but perfectly balanced. I was extremely dissapointed in all of their other styles though (IPA, wheat, and porter were all terrible).
http://www.public.iastate.edu/~sbeck/pictures/beer/flyingdogoldscratch.jpg
And I'm ashamed to admit it, but when I just feel like something light (as in I'll be having several of them at the time) I love the taste of Pabst Blue Ribbon. Even though it's $5 for a 12 pack, I really think it's just the right amount of flavorful and light.
You guys drinking Miller might as well be drinking seltzer water with 5% vodka. It's disgusting, and just barely qualifies as being beer.
cancer 05-10-2007, 09:47 AM The only alcoholic drink I like is a Jager Bomb.

I don't know if they distribute all the way out to IL, but if you like IPAs and Sam then you should try Harpoon, they have a great IPA and I think their beers are generally better than Sam.
PBR is great beer for the price. Also don't talk about my High Life that way, it is the champagne of beers, maybe your pallette is not sophisticated enough to truly appreciate it.
Round 2 05-10-2007, 11:53 AM I usually only drink at parties, so mainly I drink piss water (aka budlight/busch).
skaterbob 05-10-2007, 07:59 PM damnit ! , ive never had alcohol.. i guess ill keep it that way ..
Roboman 05-10-2007, 10:57 PM ^ Probably a good move.
Reno_Rotary 05-10-2007, 10:59 PM Thats something I always find funny, people that regularly drink telling people its good not to start.
Drinking can be bad, but only if you get out of hand with it, whats bad about a beer while watching a movie with buddies once in a while?
Roboman 05-10-2007, 11:00 PM ^ I meant for the sake of finances. I wasn't saying its bad to drink, its quite fun, but not drinking is still just as fine.
Fremry 05-10-2007, 11:06 PM PBR is great beer for the price. Also don't talk about my High Life that way, it is the champagne of beers, maybe your pallette is not sophisticated enough to truly appreciate it.
I don't mean to be an ass (alright, actually maybe a little) but I'm a bit of a beer conoisseure and Miller High Life is hands down, the worst beer I've ever had in my life.
My favorite is Yard's Philadelphia Pale Ale. You can't get it anywhere outside of Philadelphia and it is hands down the best beer ever. I've tried well over 100 beers (not including the American mega breweries) and it's the one I keep coming back to.
Citrus start, peach middle tone that hangs on your tongue for just a moment right before the hoppy finish. And if you think you have ever had a beer that has done hops well, you're wrong. This is the hops perfected. Bitter at first, but a floral palette that hangs in your nose and is absolutely intoxicating.

Dr_Feelgood 05-10-2007, 11:17 PM How much does a six pack cost in the states? Around here it varies but for the beer i get its about 16 bucks for a sixer.
Higher-Class 05-10-2007, 11:28 PM You know I gots to keep it G.
http://www.joesportsfan.com/jsfpics/columns/oe.jpg
(though they don't sell 40oz's in Florida. The biggest they sell is 32oz.)
All of my friends love Miller High Life, so I'm usually stuck with that. It doesn't taste that bad 3 bottles later. haha.
I hate to sound like a sissy, but Sparx is really good. It's pretty strong beer (7%), and it tastes just like an energy drink. I won't drink more than one, though, because energy drink is bad for you. I wouldn't even drink two regular energy drinks back to back, much less energy drinks with alcohol in them. lol.
Honestly though, I don't drink often. The only time I really drink is when I'm out with friends, they want to drink, and cannabis isn't available. When I do drink, I usually don't drink more than three or four beers (bottles)... with the exception of Spring Break, of course.
Round 2 05-10-2007, 11:52 PM How much does a six pack cost in the states? Around here it varies but for the beer i get its about 16 bucks for a sixer.
16 USD for a six pack is pretty expensive in America... If you can stand pisswater beer you can get 18 packs for like 12 bucks, but long necks are more expensive, but bottles>cans anyday.

18 pack for 12 bucks over here would be a bargain man. I love throwing down a nice longneck every once and a while.
I have another question. Is it true you dont have pre mixed drinks over there? Like bourban and coke in a can or pre mixed jack daniels and coke in a can or bottle? I heard somewhere that you dont.
Ibanez 05-11-2007, 03:00 AM Even though the legal drinking age is 21 in the US, I think everyone where ever they live can admit to drinking underage at least once. I would have to say the best beer Ive tried is Budweiser and Bud Light. I don't drink beer a lot, Im more into harder things cause I hate the watered down stale taste beer has. The most beer Ive drunk in a single night was 2 bottles of Bud Light and it made my bottle lip numb. Yet I can drink a 1/4 of hard drinks and be fine.

Haha, i'll have to admit, I was the second underage cup on the grassy keg can a few times :p...
Although, now i'm not into trying to get slammed, BUT, a nice routine of mine is that if I actually GO OUT drinking on Friday nights, I get myself a shot of Tequila Patron...Its some much smoother then Jose Cuervos...Good times guaranteed!

Yeungling is good. If you go to a bar, it costs the same as a Budweiser or Coors light, but actually has a flavor that isn't ass in a bottle. Yeungling is pretty much the cheap drink that everyone drinks at bars in PA. The only time people drink anything different is if there is a really good special (like a $1 coors light) or they are tourists.
Also, we don't even order it by name. If you ask for a "Yeungling", you're either new to bars or not from the area. You just go up and ask, "Can I get a lager?" and it's understood that it's Yeungling lager.
Pathtek4 05-11-2007, 10:24 AM ^Exactly! That's the ''phrase that pay's''! I never mentiion the ''y''word, its only ''can I get a lager please''...
and yes, they are brewed here in PA, and if you ever get the chance, they have bands that play there, and cheap drafts! A perfect combination for sure :)

Normally if Im drinking Im drinking raspberry vodka and Monster Assault (good mixed drink I made). Each time I try to drink beer I just can't find myself suffering through it cause I don't like it, I might try to force one down at a party if thats the only thing they have.
slothdog 05-11-2007, 05:28 PM my old roomates and i made hiome brew once. he made some super hoppy ipa. it was sooo bitter it was almost impossible to drink.
Customgriptape 05-11-2007, 08:56 PM ^I've had beers like that. Some companies think "beer snobs like hops, let's go ahead and add our entire stock to the brew" and it ends up being horribly unbalanced. I'm a guy who likes his hops, but I'm not gonna drink something overly hopped just to pretend I have a refined palet.

we were trying to make a really strong ipa, but we went overboard on the hops.

Try a Shiner Bock, very very good beer.

Just look at the ages and locations of some of the people replying to this thread. If that's not admittance, I don't know what is.

lol im gonna go out on a limb here and say that most parents let their kids "taste" something alchoholic by the time there 15
I like PBR a lot. I mostly drink cheap, cheap beer. I enjoy yeungling a lot.
I hate Miller High Life also. I think it is the worst tasting beer.
When it comes to liquor, I'm all about whiskey. Mainly Jim Beam, but I also like Ancient Age.(which is a cheap whiskey)
Customgriptape 05-12-2007, 09:11 PM ^I've thrown up once from drinking, and it was from half a bottle of Jim Beam. To put things in perspective, I've drank a fifth of everclear (95% alcohol) in a little over 4 hours and didn't. And please don't take that as bragging, it was an out of control raging alcoholic period of my life that I'm still struggling with.

Yeah everytime I mention I like Jim Beam to someone they say "wtf...how the hell do you drink that stuff."
I dont(im having trouble with my apostrophe key...wtf)usually get drunk off Jim Beam anymore. I just sip it with water while I read or do something else relaxing.
LemiPie 05-18-2007, 02:01 AM I'm a huge fan of Black Butte Porter. Don't minde Total Disorder either. But my favorite is Snow Plow when it's in season!
LastRites 05-20-2007, 12:55 PM I don't have at the beer too often anymore but if I do and it has to be domestic then the list is:
Anything by Shiner including original, Hefewiesen, and especially blondes. I also have a taste for Rolling Rock. We have some restaraunts in Washington called The RAM and they have some killer house brew stuff.
Of course having lived in Germany for 9 years, having spent an entire day at the Heineken brewery in Amsterdam getting sloshed, I tend to be a very descriminating beer drinker.
old_skool_sk8r 05-29-2007, 10:40 AM Sam Adams are most all good.

jesushadherpes 05-29-2007, 12:04 PM i usually get liquor( i love grey goose and crown) instead of beer unles theres some beer pong goin down cuz i love that game or a couple king cobras, evil eyes or OE.. Me and my dad are actually in teh process of building a bar for our new house.
Irish 05-29-2007, 02:59 PM I like Tuborg. It's cheap (6 cans for 7 euros).
I drink Guiness if i have the money
Ibanez 06-02-2007, 10:06 PM Uh I started drinking at 15 lol... and you say you don't like watered down taste but the best beer you've had was bud light? WTF?
It came down too Bud Light, Steel beer in a silver can , or Miller High Life. Take a sip of all of them and tell me which one wins.
If I have to drink I rather it be Vodka but not that Country Village crap that feels like I swallowed a lit match.
BuckWyld 06-03-2007, 07:41 AM It came down too Bud Light, Steel beer in a silver can , or Miller High Life. Take a sip of all of them and tell me which one wins.

RubberOnion 06-11-2007, 08:19 AM Less Beer . . . . More Vert
(now where did I leave my vert ramp?)
Tommy C 06-11-2007, 04:52 PM J.W. Dundees Honey Brown Ale... it's good stuff you should try it out... they also have a variety 12 pack with a pale ale, amber ale, porter, and the honey brown... all of them good...
also new castle...
and if I'm broke at the moment.. PBR
Brokenman 06-11-2007, 06:24 PM I hate the taste of beer, but love getting drunk off it cause i never get a hangover with beer.
What i like to do is just stick two sour patch kids under my tounge when i get to like my 7th, cause i just can't deal with the taste after a while. The two sour patch kids remove the aftertaste.

Aside from the fact that it's irresponsible to drink for the sake of getting drunk (not trying to start an argument, just mentioning), the more you drink the less you taste it anyway. But since you don't like beer, have you considered wine coolers? :icon_wink
jesushadherpes 06-19-2007, 12:30 PM haha wine coolers. anyone ever had absinthe ive been wanting to try some?

All very good choices of beer.
Irish 06-21-2007, 12:37 PM any hallucinogenic efects from the wormwood or any distiguishing effects that differ from nornmal alcohol?
I didn't notice anything really. Any weird effects are just too subtle to notice. The effect of the alcohol will cover it up. Especially when you're wasted.
jesushadherpes 08-14-2007, 11:53 PM what about favorite liquor? im a huge fan of Petron and Crown Royal just not a huge fan of their price.
what about favorite liquor? im a huge fan of Petron and Crown Royal just not a huge fan of their price.
Yeah I agree about the price, never had Patron though. Crown is good.
My favorite beer now is Keystone light. It is the cheap version of Coors light.
I love it. My roommate recently started shotgunning beer and he is insane with it. I can't even shotgun a beer, it hurts my throat a lot. :D I still do it slowly, but still it makes me drink the beer about 30 minutes faster than I would normally.
FightFlyCrow 08-15-2007, 12:22 AM I just moved and there is a good selection of left over liquor. I do not drink at all, but all of my roomates do. We are going to have a sweet party tommarow night.
russellmj 08-16-2007, 01:35 AM I guess I'm an amber ale person. Some personal faves are Newkie Brown, Fat Tire and Firestone Walker's Double Barrel Ale. Beers that have flavor. The Firestone DBA is actually made in oak casks. I can't recommend this beer enough.
I really don't drink a lot, so I like to try stuff from people who really care about their product. Ambers tend to go well in most of my social drinking scenarios, eg., a poker game, and with food that tends to be less than fine dining. While Guinness has it's place, it's not really a beer I enjoy by itself.
iwoodpush 08-16-2007, 11:23 AM For beer. Keystone is perfect for us college kids. Cheap and not bad. I enjoy Coors, Bud, and that's really it for house party-ish beers. As for other beers, Blue Moon, Hoegardt, Magic Hat 9 and Circus Boy, Sam Adams every once in a while, @Fremry I have had Yards. It was very enjoyable. Boo to Miller High Life. "Champagne of Beers my ass."
My favorite brew:

Pathtek4 08-16-2007, 12:15 PM OH MY!!! Bikini lines in light beer, best invention EVER! Damn that light beer that covers the glory that could be ours :)
and Petron is good, but too much and my mouth tastes like candy for some reason (kinda like those St. Ides special brews...nothing like throwing up that fruit punch flavor to let you know your still alive, when you wish you were dead before it happened)
01rmck 08-19-2007, 08:03 AM my favorite lager has to be grolsch but i think the nicest beer i've ever had is this EXTREEMELY dark ale, i could almost taste charcole lmao;) i can't even remember it's name though>>>serious:(
beer always tastes nicer out of a bottle or a glass, i hate drinking out of a can. out of the generic beers the only ones i will refuse to drink is stella or becks. horrible drinks!! oh, and budweiser, i used to love it but then i drank far far too much of it one night and just the thought of it makes me feel sick lols
remyhero 08-20-2007, 03:06 PM call me old fashioned but I like Jack, Jim, and some Sweet Southern Comfort.

I agree
jesushadherpes 08-30-2007, 08:56 AM that is the only situatiion i could ever see a combination of natural light and bud select being enjoyable.
Dog Town 09-15-2007, 12:41 AM Just tried a Shiner 98, their special anniversary brew very good amber lager. This is a limited release so check it out.
Listed under anniversary brews: http://www.shiner.com/beers/beers-home.php
And seriously...how can people drink Coors or Bud light??? Yikes!!
That's your problem...lol, you drank the King of crap beers. ;) I good beer does not have a watered down taste!
If you are of legal age (our disclaimer) then try a Sam Adams Lager, Shiner Bock, or a shiner 98 and then let us know. If I had to drink Bud Light, Coors, or Miller light I wouldn't bother at all. I like to have a nice drink for the quality of the drink, not the alcohol to get intoxicated.
choker 09-15-2007, 09:34 AM I just moved and there is a good selection of left over liquor. I do not drink at all, but all of my roomates do. We are going to have a sweet party tommarow night.
its nice to find someone else who doesnt.
Beuford23 09-16-2007, 12:35 AM All I can say to my brothers south of my border is that if you ever get the chance to try Micro-brewed Canadian beer - TRY IT!!!!!!!
I have to toot our horn on this one. Our beer up here has a tad more kick to it than down there.
Some of my favorites........hmmmmm
Shaftsbury Rainforest Ale, Philips Chocolate Porter, Philips Oatmeal Stout, Race Rocks Amber and I happen to have in my hand at this very moment a very ice cold bottle of Kokanee (5% alcohol)
Cheers!
Rev2010 09-18-2007, 02:23 PM ****, there's so many but off the top of my head:
Franziskaner Weissbier
Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale (and a few others like Dogfish Head Punkin and Jack's Pumpkin Spice ale)
Schneider Weisse Edel-Weiss as well as regular Schneider Weisse
Fuller's Vintage and Fuller's 1845
Maisel's Weissbier
Boddington's
Samuel Smith Pale Ale
Man, the list can go on and on but that's good enough. :D
Rev.
It's all about the dark brews.
I only wish Samuel Smith's wasn't so expensive. A four pack is like a pricey sixer.
Dog Town 09-20-2007, 10:58 AM You can catch Sam Adams on sale....Wine and More has 12 packs for $11.99 right now. ;)

however, so far murphy's is hands down my favorite stout beer.

Never tried a Murphy's...and I don't like cans at all....but I tried a Guinness Drought tonight and it was blllaaahhh...no "real" taste, very thin and un-eventful.
The Lion is MUCH better!!

Ibanez 12-20-2007, 08:02 AM I hate beer it all taste terrible to me, Ive tried a lot. My favorite at least is Budwiser and Bud Ice but I found that Im more of a malt guy. Since I turned 21 Ive drunk a pint of Smirnoff Ice which is 5%
I think its mostly a cooler or something but I have yet to find a bad mix. I got half a bottle mixed with my pepsi right now. But if you say vodka Im there, Ive been hooked on that since I was 19.

Yeah it was alright had a nice taste, at first it had a taste of salt in it.
Don't fruit my beer.
I can't stand normal beer I have to have some flavor to it otherwise it tastes like watered down goat sex. So I stick with flavored malt normally, but Im going to go to the gas station to get a Colt 45 40 oz (for old time of under ageing it).
oldrampratt 01-23-2008, 10:12 PM First time I tried Purple Haze, thought it tasted like grapefruit, guess I had too much Boddingtons and Stout that evening!!! Not too bad for a fruit flavored beer....

No.
Was at BWW watching the UFC a few weeks ago and had a few Sam Adams, just before leaving I had the "special" which was a Miller Light...taste like water and chemicals.
Tried a few at a tasting not long ago...all good brews, some are below..
Currently in the fridge:
Anchor Steam (http://www.anchorbrewing.com/) (one of my favorites now)
Lion Stout (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/389/1115/?sort=high&start=0) (my favorite stout)
Flying Dog Porter (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/68/206) (Road Dog)
Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/68/24071) (wow...at 9% it a little strong and black as tar...lol)
oldrampratt 03-22-2008, 01:19 AM Hey Dogtown, do you like any of the other Flying Dog brews? Their seasonal beers aren't too bad. The bad thing about living here in Tenn. is you can only get the Gonzo I.P. in liquior stores. Here in the land of Elvis anything over 6.0% is sold in liquior stores. There are just a few stores here in Memphis that carry the "BIG BEER"....Just bought the last Sam Adams Winter mixed 12 pack, some interesting brews in there....
Higher-Class 03-23-2008, 04:08 PM I can't remember if I've posted here or not. I pretty much like beer in general; there have only been a few that I really couldn't stand (Sam Adams Summer Ale). I can always do some Tecate or this novelty beer Apricotweizen, suprise, it has an apricot flavor that is surprisingly good in beer.
But I'm not too picky, just something that doesn't taste like a little watered down alcohol.

Yes, a very good American beer. Sadly, people think Bud and Miller are good beers...Sam Adams makes a excellent beer...that's why a 12 pk of Sam cost $16 and a 12 pack and a 20 pack of Bud is $11. ;)
no_skating 04-09-2008, 11:23 AM anyone heard of Bell's? Anything they make is PHENOMENAL.
srsly they've got something for everyone. In the summer, they put out their Oberon, which is my personal favorite. They've also got some darks, like their Porter, Two-Hearted Ale (VERY hoppy), and their Pale Ale.
They've also got an un-pastuerized red called Amber Ale. Unstoppable. Its brewed here in Kalamazoo, MI, and i'm not sure how far they distribute, but if you ever get a chance to try something with the Bell's brand, do it.

Green (and clear) bottles let too much light in which spoils the brew. That's why Heineken and others get that "skunky" flavor by the time they reach North America. I've been to Amsterdam, and Heineken from the tap over there tastes totally different. I stick to the brown bottle brews, like JHH and Dog Town.

oldrampratt 06-09-2008, 12:11 AM Dogtown, can't remember if I asked this before, do you or have you ever visited the Flying Saucer Draught Emporium in your fine city? The summer ale is good on draft, maybe you got a bad batch? I had a six pack of Sam Adam Lager a while back that was horrable, skunky beer and if that was the first time I would have never bought it again...I knew better. ;)
Dogtown, can't remember if I asked this before, do you or have you ever visited the Flying Saucer Draught Emporium ...
No, I keep wanting to go. We don't have any micro brewerys near, the closest is Winston Salem or Greensboro. When I was in Denver that's th place for micro's...76 of them.
Since we are on the subject, not sure if I have posted this before but if you get a chance try anything from Bell's Brewery. I have had the Two Hearted, The Java Stout, Expedition Stout, Pale Ale (very hoppy and good), and their wheat and all were excellent.

OldBallsNJ 06-30-2008, 08:30 AM I don't know if this has been discussed YET... but, I've heard a rumor that the imported *green bottle* beers (heineken, Becks, etc) all use brown bottles over in europe, and that the green bottle thing is just a marketing gimmick.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?
It's probably why I really enjoy Heineken on tap, but not so much out of a bottle.
I miss the brew pub back, Triumph, in Princeton NJ. Used to go there in my college days, have dinner, some beers, and take home a half-gallon bottle of fresh brewed tap beer. MMMmmm. Their Honey wheat was amazing. Light and drinkable, but really substantial... like a nice hearty slice of bread. haha.l
Rev2010 07-23-2008, 01:27 PM I don't know if this has been discussed YET... but, I've heard a rumor that the imported *green bottle* beers (heineken, Becks, etc) all use brown bottles over in europe, and that the green bottle thing is just a marketing gimmick.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?
Answering this one month late but what the heck. No, it's not true. Green bottled beer is still bottled in the same color in Europe. There's actually generally no difference whatsoever between the European beers distributed here and in Europe except the labeling and sizing (centiliters vs. ounces). The bottles and cans are usually the same, again except sizing, and the alcohol content is always the same. Many have the impression that european beer in the home country is stronger than the exported beer we receive but it's completely wrong. I've traveled all over Europe several times and am a beer connoisseur so trust me on this that. The reason you like Heineken better on draught is probably because it's fresher or experiences less exposure to light. Often, beer will taste different between draught, bottles, and cans.
For example, as someone already mentioned here, Fosters taste great in a can but isn't anything special out of the bottle. I think the packing medium makes a difference on a number of beers. Being a can or keg is completely opaque it doesn't let in any light. Bottles do. Brown bottles let in less light than green ones and light does have an affect on beer over time. Some beers are also bottle conditioned so the taste may vary between draught and will even vary between bottle sizes! My favorite beer tastes fantastic on draught and in .5 liter bottles but the taste is nowhere near as good in 12 ounce bottles. I think it has to do with less yeast in the smaller bottle, and for some strange reason the 12 ounce bottle is green whereas the bigger is brown.
One last thing. A number of beers from foreign countries are brewed close to home under supervision of the main company. I've personally found them to taste identical to being brewed in the home country. The Japanese beer Asahi, for example, that comes in a bottle is brewed in Canada yet the cans we get are from Tokyo Japan. Common sense would figure glass is much heavier than cans so they have the bottled version produced closer to us whereas it's not so expensive to ship the cans. They both taste identical. The only beer I've had that didn't taste the same was Foster's in Germany. For some reason it tasted like a typical German lager - I can't explain why though... substituted with German hops? Anyhow everything else I've tasted tastes the same no matter where it was brewed.
Anyhow, hope that answers your question.
Rev.
Geissler 07-23-2008, 06:47 PM Anyone been to the czech republic? Pilsner Urquell, a standard over there, is the best beer I've ever had. Ever seen beer cheaper than water in the supermarket? Thought not.

Just unwrapping that golden foil on the top makes you feel like a king...
What I usually have, though, is a cheapo catalan beer brewed by damm called Xibeca - big glass litre bottle costs 1 euro, and it's not as trashy as those american light beers. Score.

Higher-Class 07-23-2008, 11:00 PM Ever seen beer cheaper than water in the supermarket? Thought not.
Italy! You could buy a 1 liter bottle of Peroni (which, coincidentally, I have included in the layout of my blog [in my sig]) for 1 euro. They also have full sized bottles of wine for 1.30 euros, and locally made wine for about 3 euros. Alcohol is so cheap over there <3<3<3
The best beer I've ever had was Ceres Extra Stout. I drank it in Italy, but it's from Denmark. It tastes awesome, and 9.1% alcohol volume makes it a pretty heavy hitter. I never knew I could feel so fly after just one beer.
FightFlyCrow 07-23-2008, 11:09 PM In St Louis there is a Sangria that is 22 proof. A 750mL bottle is $1.90. One quart(slightly more) water is $2.00.

Geissler 07-24-2008, 01:14 PM lol, yeah, sometimes we have it nice over here in europe. Spain is the same for wines and sangria. Drop around 2 euros for a well-chosen bottle in the supermarket and you can be drinking a wine which is actually decent.
Peroni is great beer, I still remember when I was in italy all the locals I was drinking with - "birra peroni! birra peroni!", hah.
Recently tried Golden Pheasant (Zlaty Bazant in the Slovak Republic) for the first time. Great lager beer.

Ha, just had it myself a week ago today! Definitely a great beer. Very crisp and refreshing. The place that I had it in is a Czech/Polish bar & restaurant in Manhattan. It was mega hot out and it was the perfect cool off.

True, its stronger than most beers. I though that point would be usefull since people were talking about booze cheaper than water.

Nah, it's cool man. I love Sangria, especially white sangria. I was just kidding around with ya. You know... like -> :icon_poke

lol, that was my favorite part of Italy. It was so fun drinking with the locals in the middle of the day.
Ibanez 07-25-2008, 12:56 AM Once I went to the Mault side I haven't been able to go back too beer. To me all beer tasted the same and had to much watered down taste to it, but with drinks like Olde English and Colt 45 it tastes like a beer, true but it has a nice smooth taste to it.
Ive already drunk my weight in Olde English after only 5 or 6 months of drinking it. Colt 45 well the taste is alright but its pretty strong. I woke up still a bit buzzed and with the taste in my mouth.
My top beers still haven't changed though
1. Budwiser
2. Miller Light
3. Bud Ice
That Steel crap is pretty nasty.

That's because you haven't had real beer. Proof is in the fact you're top three beers are all crap and you like Old E :) Try some German beer (Hefe-Weizen is my favorite), Belgian beer, English (or Scottish) beer, Czech beer, and American microbrewery beers and you'll think different. If after trying those you still feel the same then you simply just don't like beer.

I haven't had a English or German. Ive had Swedish, Norweign, Finnish, Holland, and Mexican all tasted the same like watered down goat sex which made me come close to throwing up. I like Malt drinks Olde English I had was 9%. I'll take Olde E and Colt 45 over any beer.

Lol...your taste buds must be totally gone...lol. Yikes, I agree with you, most every beer you have listed does taste like water. Try a real beer...a few common good beers listed below:
Anyone have access to Three Floyds (http://www.threefloyds.com/) beer in Indiana/Illinois??
Anyway, here are a few excellent beers I have tried lately....along with anything from Bell's in Michigan, awesome brewery!!
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, great smell and taste wonderful out of a pint glass: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/140/276
Sierra Nevada Harvest Ale...hard to find but very, very good! http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/140/6549
Schwelmer Weizen, a Hefe that's a little sweeter than I like but not a bad beer: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/4884/20088/?

Well I'll try them, I also trust that site, Ive used it to find out good beer since I was 19 (we've all done underage drinking Im sure) I'll try the Sierra Nevada one, if I can find it.
Irish23 07-29-2008, 01:55 AM guinness is the best beer made drink it every day !!!!
Higher-Class 08-10-2008, 11:13 PM Another vacation means a few more beers to add to my "good beer" list:
http://bp3.blogger.com/_aDXAdfdm45g/SAWZK31xWhI/AAAAAAAAAB8/GWMZqAfOjUU/s320/rest.jpg
Rickard's Red. had this one on tap
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j110/Beethovenv/Beethoven2/MolsonCanadian-bottleandglass-1.jpg
Molson Canadian (This is a very standard, cheap beer around Canada, but it's pretty decent. It's MUCH better than comparably priced American beer.). had this one on tap as well as in a bottle as well as a can.
http://www.glunzbavarianhaus.com/images/dab2.jpeg
Dortmunder Actien Brauerei. Not GREAT, but definitely a beer I would buy again. I had this on tap in Italy a month ago but I forgot the name of it, and I recently found it in a liquor store in Toronto. I bought it in cans.
And... a couple to add to my "bad beer" or "beer to stay clear of" list:
Labatt Blue and Labatt Blue Light
Sapporo. I bought one of their "Draft Beer" cans on a whim from the same place I bought the DAB in Toronto. It came in a very cool looking can, but it tasted like garbage. The only thing good about this beer was that I got a buzz from pounding all 650ml of it distastefully quickly because it tasted so bad.
^Rickards Red is godly, its about the only thing I drink now when I go out. Canadian is okay if it's on tap when you're short on cash. Stuff like Miller Light and Bud (both regular and light) are disgusting.
Dog Town 08-12-2008, 01:41 AM Tried a few new ones...
Mojo (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/130/12322) from Boulder Beer and it's very good.
http://www.drunkenpolack.com/images/mojo.jpg
Also tried the highly rated Maharaja (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30/22352) from Avery, way too strong and could not finish it...had to pour a pint down the drain. Not worth the $$

Agreed. I had a pint of it in "The Keg" bar and steakhouse on my last night in Toronto. I couldn't have asked for a better draught beer to set off my last evening out of the country for a while.
Canadian is okay if it's on tap when you're short on cash.
Yeah, I was iffy on it until I had it on tap with dinner. It went very well with my chicken sammich and was surprisingly much better on tap than from a can or bottle.
Stuff like Miller Light and Bud (both regular and light) are disgusting.
Seriously. I just started getting into the world of good beer within the past few months, and I already cannot stomach Miller, Bud, Bush, Coors, NATTY, or any other cheap mass-produced beer. I don't understand how people can drink that stuff regularly. Maybe they haven't had their good beer cherries popped yet. Maybe I'm just being closed-minded; some people probably prefer a watery taste over a full-bodied complex beer. One of my friends today told me that she tried Sam Adams and hated it. She likes lime-flavored crap like Miller Chill and Bud Light Lime, both of which can hardly be called beers in my eyes.
zerohalo21 08-19-2008, 02:43 AM http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u121/simon_tommo/Pure-Blonde-Bottle.jpg
I'm having one of these fine Australian beers right now.
Why do Americans love lite beer so much.? You'd get punched in the face and called a fag at a pub if you asked for a lite beer in Australia.
lazerusRy 08-21-2008, 01:14 AM Love Mickey's but it's hard to find in Canada. Like most Euro Lagers, Drafts
I'm kind of picky with my beers. The low end for me is Heineken and Blue Moon, they're my reserves for when I can't find what I prefer to drink because they're both readily available and taste passably good.
Generally though, when I have my choice, I'll buy...
Magic Hat
Hoegaarden
Great Lakes (Local brewery in NE Ohio)
Leinenkugel's (Their lemonade summer flavor is ridiculously good and refreshing)
Rare Vos (Only sold in a large 5$ bottle)
Random beers from Germany and Belgium, too many to remember and they all have weird names like Wiederbrussel or whatever. They make good beer though.
I drink Warsteiner from time to time because for some reason their deuces sell for half price compared to their siz packs. $1.50 a duece compared to 8 or 9 dollars for a six pack. Weird. It's not anything too special, but if I'm feeling cheap it sure as hell beats something like Budweiser or Miller Light, two beers I refuse to ever drink.
I was a strictly Great Lakes man for about two years. Then I was sold on hoegaarden. This summer I've been all about Leinenkugel's various brews. Hoegaarden would be be favorite overall though.
Rev2010 08-22-2008, 09:04 AM ^^^ Great choices!! I've traveled to England a few times and always brought back the Hoegaarden in the 25.4oz bottles with the cork in it. Dude... if you think Hoegaarden is good on tap you HAVE to try it in the corked bottle! Same beer, but OMG it is even better, sooo much better. Last time I went to London I couldn't find them anymore. I could never find it in the states. I still have an empty bottle of one (have a collection of bottles displayed in my kitchen).
Also, Rare Vos is great. Actually, I love everything by Ommegang, especially Hennepin. Magic Hat's Circus Boy is also a nice american weizen.

The Beard 08-22-2008, 02:26 PM I have a story.
I went up to the cities about a week ago for my buddy's 21st. well we wanted to go skate, so i checked in my trunk for a board. a few decks, but nothing else. what i DID happen to find is an unopened can of MGD light. well i decided to leave it there seeing as how i had NO idea how long it had been there plus it'd be warm as hell.
a couple days later im sick and sitting at home watching TV all day.. and i realize that beer is advertised like a mother ****er. what does this do? makes me go out to my trunk for that stank ass beer. throw it in the freezer and happily enjoy my cold but skunked beer because i hadn't had one in a week. delicious yet... funky lol.
Dog Town 08-22-2008, 10:16 PM I tried a great brew the other day, made by Bear Republic (http://www.bearrepublic.com/) Racer 5 IPA...good and very hoppy...try it if you can!
There's a microbrewery in Moab. I sampled all their beers and unsurprisingly liked their lighter ones the best. The Lizard one and the Elephant ones were my favorite. Forgot their actual names, you can google moab brewery if you're curious.
swavo348 08-24-2008, 10:31 PM Being in college I need something cheap. Even if Keystone is disgusting it does the job and in a very cost effective matter. When I throw done some bills I'll usually go for some Sam Adam's. Octoberfest or Summer Ale are probably my 2 favorite flavors. I'm not very picky with anything, I ate moldy bread and old chicken salad today and couldn't taste the difference. I only found out it was bad when my mom came over to see what I was eating. So.... pass me the cheap Bud, Keystones, Coors anytime and I'll down it.
ghost_360 08-24-2008, 11:57 PM 1. Obsidian Stout(Deschutes Brewery)
2. Fat Tire Amber Ale
3. Red Hook IPA
4. Widmer Hefeweizen w/ lemon
If I'm trying to tie one on I take a shot of ice cold Jack D. between brews.
lazerusRy 08-25-2008, 03:51 AM Mickey's(hard to find in Canada), Red Stripe,Becks
ghost_360 08-25-2008, 04:06 AM Lazerus is the second Canadian to suggest Mickey's. Why does "America's Hat" like the hornet so much? =P
lazerusRy 08-25-2008, 04:49 AM Lazerus is the second Canadian to suggest Mickey's. Why does "America's Hat" like the hornet so much? =P
Because In Canada it's 5.5% we like alchohol in our beer. Thanks for the compliment "America's Hat" I'll presume your saying we're on the top and we have all the brains. Kind, far too kind.
ghost_360 08-25-2008, 05:03 AM When I read through this thread I saw someone say that foreign beers are same as U.S. domestic. I'm close to the Canadian border(never been up there) but have heard that the brew is stronger. 5.5 for Mickey's would be watered down in the States, I think it's closer to 6.5. We should conduct a study(burp). On(hicup) somethung....wut wuz I sayzing?>
Rev2010 08-25-2008, 10:26 AM No, no beer is watered down for U.S. consumption. It's all one big myth. I've had beer here from all over the world. I have also had the very same beers in their home countries and they are all the same. There is no reason whatsoever beer shipping to the US would be different in alcohol content. Actually, it would be expensive and tedious for companies to brew and ship seperate batches.
Rev.
The Beard 08-25-2008, 12:27 PM correction, companies sell regular beer and watered down beer as well
liquor stores and bars sell non-watered down beer. gas stations and **** like that sell 3.2% alcohol level beer.
Merging doublepost
also, i didnt realize it till last night, i like heinekens...
