Well, at first, I lived in the ghetto and everyone there skated. So when I was 8, I got into it and by the time I was ten, I was landing ollies everytime and kickflips 4/10 times. Then, we moved and I brought skating to my new town. Now, there's a ton of skaters out here.

Well my m8 started skating, and i saw his ollies, and by that time he had been skating for like 3 months, and i where like "I can do em way better" tho ive never skated bfore.. Now i can do them way better than him xD

And then i thought it just had to be great to pull of a great move and then land it in front of some kids

i have to say tony hawk skate games as well. the skate culture just seemed like fun and it was definatly more laid back cause there were no coaches or people demanding anything. it became a hobby. i skated when i wanted to and how i wanted to. skating is all about how you evolve it in my opinion.

It all started when my buddy bought THPS 2. We played on the good ol' N64, and he decided he wanted to skateboard. I still wanted to play my pokemon gameboy game. Once I saw him ollie his curb, I was like OMFG. So I bunny hopped on a scooter. I felt so good. But I still craved a skateboard. So I bought a walmart one, and screwed around.
Now, years later, I decided, after skating my little brother's W.I. board and learning to ollie, that I wanted a skateboard of my own.
Thus began the legacy of me.

I use to skate a while back just for something to do and get out of the house. I broke my deck and didnt buy another til now, been a few years and I got back into it, again, for something to do. Nothing beats landing that new trick.

I started skating in the 1980s boom spearheaded by the rise of Tony Hawk and Christian Hosoi. It was a phenomenon similar to the present, there were TONS of young skateboarders.

The current state of skateboarding is unprecedented though, you guys have more skateparks than ever before and the level of professional riding is unbelievably high. You also have the benefit of advanced skateboard designs, much better than the primitive boards I rode when I started.

i started becuase one of my good friends had a board and thought it was cool. then my other good friend got a board. *we all had wal-mart boards* then i stopped for a couple years and only 2 of us came back into it and got real boards.

Where do you think this will evolve into? I'm going to college next year and probably study journalism, I'm thinking I might write for skateboarding magazines..

Noj
11-14-2007, 06:27 PM
It's tough to say, Kelav. I had no idea skateboarding would have the resurgence it has already had. Maybe its popularity will die again, only to be reborn with yet another surge. More likely I see it becoming widely accepted and practiced by more people than ever, with all the strength and tradition of sports such as baseball or football or basketball.

Today, many kids can skateboard a park setting during P.E., something I never had the opportunity to do. That alone makes me think this era of skateboarding has much more staying power. Kids are growing up playing the Tony Hawk video game series, and seem to believe they can skate as well as the characters in the video game--and they do! Well, on a more realistic level, but still...

I'm blown away by the number of really great skateboarders there are today. Even on this message board members such as MRCK and johnny16x and others are really gifted riders. This ability to film tricks and understand them from a filmed perspective is a HUGE advantage, like MLB or NFL or NBA players watching film to understand how to play better.

Watching footage of someone with freaky skills on a skateboard still isn't old to me, and I've been doing it for 20 years. I've got to believe most of the skateboarders who've been skating for more than a few years love it as much as I do, and with more exposure and better opportunities for skating it can only mean there will be more skateboarders for years to come.

Good luck with your journalism career, Kelav.

Haha Friends, I felt so jealous!

You're the one who should be a journalist, you develop your ideas to an extent I can't really answer well :D And I agree, the internet has become a great way of sharing knowledge, and probably that helped skateboarding grow (just like the Tony Hawk games, as you also mentioned)

I just hope you're right, I hope those "hard" cops will start looking at skateboarding from the actual perspective, and that skateboarding keeps growing. At least it's a sport, and one where you can actually see each time you improve a little bit.

And thanks for the support. As far as I know, there's only one skateboarding magazine published in portuguese. The thing I don't know, though, if it can survive for 6 or 7 years. That's when I'm going to (hopefully) finish college.

Everyone at my school goes (oh I started skating cause it looked cool). I bet these are the people who give up when it's too hard.
I was bored by all these events (like school, and stuff) and wanted to do something new. Thats when a skater skated past me, and I just thought 'wow hes having fun'.

Well, like a lot of people I saw Rodney mullen skate in THPS2 and THPS3. Plus, my dad was a sponsored skater in the 70's, so he used to have a board in our garage. I got my first board when I was 5 and i messed around until like last summer when I got serious about it.

Today, I basically skate because I love it and I am constantly thinking about it. It is something individual that I can do without a coach and without rules. Its all about individuality and the art form that it is.

GNAR
11-25-2007, 04:00 PM
Let me tell you exactly how I started skating.

It was the summer when I was 12, and me and my friend Brandon were bored and had nothing to do. We both had crappy wal mart boards and I said "wanna ride around?"

That's how it all started.

NMarko
11-27-2007, 02:54 PM
I was bored one day and remembered I had a skateboard(was a walmart board from around 3rd grade) in the garage. Then I thought it was pretty fun and got myself a new board(real one this time) and started skating ~2 months ago.

But...the town we moved to is wicked into skateboarding, I bought my son an awesome zero and it took off from there.

One of my friends was doing it and I asked my dad for one and he got me an oldschool one from one of his friends , it must have been from back when that style of board was popular because it broke in like 15 minutes. I quit not long after because I was like 9 or so, but I still stuck around and enjoyed the whole scene. I'm back to skateboarding now but I have been around skateboarding since tony hawks pro skater 1. I still remember seeng people carving the pools and stuff at the local skatepark.

I started to skateboard because of my friends and my brother who were both motivation. Since then my friend is letting cigarettes destroy his life and now none of us skate however I just bought a zoo york complete and am about to buy some zoo york skate shoes.

As of now there the only things motivating me to skate are youtube videos and this forum. Where I live there are no skaters or skateparks. Everyone will hate on me, question my ethnicity. I just have to maintain a "do something about it" attitude tward(sp?) haters and just skate.

First I thought it looked cool, but later I slowly lost the care and the need... and gained more love for skating.

Vids and movies introduced me to extremely varying types of skating... and I'm slowly getting into them all.

Well I picked up skating because:

1. Ive always wanted to do it (had a board long ago, when I was 10 or so, but gave up before I learned how to loosen the trucks!)

2. I've started eating healthy and working out, and I want to push myself to the limits. Physically and Mentally. Skateboarding is PERFECT for this.

3. Most of all it is FUN, and keeps your brain and body active. I will also note that I am shocked at the intelligence and maturity level of this board since most of you are in the teenage years. I'm almost 21 btw.

4. I have this dream to ollie like a mad man in a neighborhood, just poppin ollies over curbs, on curbs, basically surfing the concrete and jumpin over obstacles like its nothing. It will be a reality soon...

1) To spend time with my little bro.

2) I've always wanted to try it, but never went out and just DID it until recently. I regret not doing it sooner.

3) Boredom. I wanted yet another hobby to mess with since I was getting bored working on my music lately; and the car/auto scene here is nhil - of course the skating scene isn't much better, but I'm not in it for that - I skate because _I_ want to above all, even if it were just me left.

4) Exercise! Because running laps is boring!

5) Hope. I know it may sound wierd, but the first time I stepped on a board and pushed off and kept my balance it just felt.. RIGHT. Everytime I glide along now it just feels so good. I really look forward to getting a nice high ollie down, I bet that is going to feel REALLY good. All my stress seems to go away for a moment and makes the future look really good.

I started skating cause I found a Element skateboard with Tensor trucks at my park. (Not a skatepark, just a regular kids park)

So I took it and learned how to skate.

I started skating when I was 7 cuz I got a wal-mart board when I got baptized. Then my board got stolen, and my sister won me another wal-mart in a raffle. But it was on and off until this summer when I started skating seriously because all of my friends skate.

One of my neighbors was skating and I was like. ZOMG. NO MORE POKEMON I WANT SKATEBOARD.

^^^lol

Anyway, umm...when I was younger I used to watch my brother skateboard all the time. It looked extremely fun, but my mom wouldn't let me try it because she thought I would "hurt" myself...like he never got hurt? lol Anywho, a lot of my friends skate as well*and watching them made me even more interested in trying it out :0) So now I'm learning to skateboard, took me a while to finally get the guts to try it...better late than never though.

when i was younger my brother got one of those fish shaped ones, and one day i decided to break it out and me and my bestest friend at the time started riding around. this was when i was like 9 or so. one day he found a real board in the garbage around the block, it had a concave and two tails (toy r us boards didn't have concave back then :P) i let him ride the fish one because he liked it and i rode the one he found. thats how i learned to ride. i didn't even THINK of doing anything other than a tic-tac then.

we eventually stopped skating, we got older, i didn't really think of trying tricks so i pretty much got bored. back then we jumped from sport to sport, skateboarding, biking, rollerblading, and even scootering (they're both a lot gayer to me now)

years later my brother and his friends started skating again and i've always loved it since those early days so i kind of wanted to get into it but i was never allowed to play in any of their reindeer games so i waited and didnt pick it up again until i bought my own board a few years later

Yeah I got started skateboarding when I was around 10 years old. My dad bought me my first board at a local shop, and it was a blank board with some blank trucks and world industries wheels.

I spent about half a year trying to figure out how the hell you ollie, and my neighbor just didn't explain it too well. It had me so pissed off that I couldn't do a simple ollie, so i basically put down the board for two years.

During that time I started to get the tony hawk games, and about 2 years ago, i got T.H.U.G., and I realized that I couldn't do anything in skateboarding because I didn't even try.

And so I tried, and now im busting tre'flips off of 5 stairs.

Well I searched this topic and came up with nothing

Exactly why did you chose skateboarding?

Me I chose it cause I grew in a neighborhood of BMX riders and they all were so much more advanced and I seemed like I wasn't getting anywhere with that. I new kid moved into a house down the road from mine and I saw him skating a flat bar and thought it was the coolest thing I ever saw (keep in mind I was 12).
I asked him if how long he had been skateboarding for and he said a few months, I asked him if he could teach me some stuff and he said sure. So the next day I went to our local skate shop and bought a brand new complete. He showed me how to ollie and ever since then I have been completely hooked

So share your stories and have fun with it :icon_bigg:icon_bigg

McMega
08-02-2008, 03:13 AM
Well, originally my neighbor gave me one of his old completes and i started to mess around on it, eventually trying some tricks. This was all in elementary school. But then after i learned how to ollie i decided to try a rail, which was a bad idea, and i fell on it and messed up my ribs, one healed sticking out a bit, so thats kinda cool though, in a gross way. But then i stopped skating.
Then two years ago after my freshman year of highschool, i looked at my life, which basically consisted of counterstrike and world of warcraft, and i was like 'damn, my life sucks'. So i went and dug out my old skateboard and started learning some things. and here i am now.

Thanks for posting the link Casper :icon_wink I've merged both threads.

Merging doublepost

I started skating when I was a lot younger, about 11 through 14 years old or so. Funny how it started really. We had this cheapo chinese store and one day a friend of mine and I were passing by and they had those Ninja boards in there (you know... the old school cheapo boards with Ninja graphics on them). Well, ninja's are cool :) and we saw the price was cheap so we thought, "Let's buy skateboards!!" So we did and got started. The bearings were horrifically slow so the first real change in our skate life came fast - real bearings! We bought some german bearings and things were much better. We started learning how to ollie on those crap boards and eventually changed the wheels and realized it was time for a real board. During all this time all our other friends got their own boards as well and started learning. So we got our real boards and everyone followed suit. Eventually we had our own skate crew of about 10-13 people or so. Those years were some of the best years of my life! After all my friends started parting ways I got bored of skating alone and got into other things. Flash forward to my adult years - I know this is going to sound mega corny but a few years back I was buying DVD's and came across Thrashin' on DVD and was stoked to see it on disc. So I bought it, watched it, and wondered why I ever quit. I've always loved it, so I went out and bought a complete and started all over again. Been something like 4 or 5 years now and I'm still with it. Though, I haven't been skating through the crappy winters here in NYC I think this time I will be. I can't, sorry... I don't want to stop for months anymore.

My old neighbor =D

He and I hung out. Then one day he said he couldn't hang out because he wanted to play with his cheap board, so then I saw he had a extra. I learned to cruise that day.

I had a mate who skated. Only dude I knew who did, and it looked amazing to me, and within a month we were all spending our paychecks on decks. Two months later I've moved away from there and don't know anybody here who skates, but I thought I'd stick with it.

anywayz we hired a small cabine next to a steep road, also it was a very boring vacation so i bought myself a skateboard to go off that steep road.
i couldnt push of turn then but i didnt gave a damn:P
and later when i got home i was still skating and practicing my ollies and manuals
all this was in march 2007.

I started out when I was probably 10 or 11, my best friend skated and he sucked me into it. We were actually into all kinds of street activity actually; go karts, scooters, dustbins - you name it, we raced it down the huge hill outside his house. Skating was just a natural progression for us. Probably massively influenced by THPS2 as well now that I think of it :D.

I restarted because I live in a damn cool city to skate - It would basically have been a crime NOT to skate. But what keeps me going is the challenge, I guess. Skating is the hardest thing I've ever done. Every time you go out it's like walking into the belly of the beast - it chews you up and spits you out all sweaty and broken but with a grin on your face, and you know that once you've experienced it you'll never get skating out of your blood...
