View Full Version : **The "official" guide to reputation.**

Brought to you by the Creative team..

-What is the purpose of the Reputation System?
The rep system is basically a way to show everyone exactly who is a good contributor to the Cafe, and who has not been so innocent. Positive reputation is given for good, intelligent, and funny posts. Members with high reputation points are generally the more well-respected members of the Cafe, and it shows that they are helpful and they make intelligent posts. You can generally trust the more respected members if you have quick questions about the Cafe. Remember, reputation is not a contest. It is a reward given to individuals who make good posts, and it shows they are helping the Cafe and/or its members progress.

-What is rep?
Rep is something that only each user has control of. They can basically choose who they want to give positive( + Rep) or negative(- rep) to, and when to give it. It's an open system that is controlled only by a bit of good moral, and a guide. The guide is the keyword.

-How you get rep.
You receive reputation when another poster clicks the Ying-Yang sign in the little profile box left of your post. Rep is usually given for comedic, witty, intelligent or helpful posts. There are other reason to give rep, but nothing concrete. Simply try to be the best possible member you can be.

-How to give rep.
You can give other members rep by clicking the "Ying-Yang" sign in the little profile box left of their post. Once you click this a comment box appears and two click able buttons that say "I approve" and "I disapprove". Filling in "I approve" gives positive rep where as filling in " I disapprove" gives negative reputation. When you're finished you "should" fill in the comment box with the reason for giving reputation. This is so the staff does not think it was a "spam rep" and delete it. Then click the button that says "Add to reputation" and you're done.

-What does having rep do.
Reputation has one major function. That is to move you up the ranks on skater's cafe, with an increase in ranks you have a general increase in privileges as well. Though your member rank isn't solely based on rep, it's also got to do with the length of time you've been here and your posts. For more information on member ranks check the Member Permissions and Settings Sticky. (http://www.skaterscafe.com/showthread.php?t=30941)
Reputation also has the function of giving you "an idea" of the content of a members posts. The more rep, the better member(hypothetically). Though this isn't entirely accurate considering the longer you been a member the larger chance you would have to get reputation comments. Keep in mind you should never "judge" another member by their rep, posts or length of membership. Every member of Skater's Cafe is to be treated properly regardless of any statistic details or opinion. Of course there is also the obvious reason of rep, to made your profile appear more "flashy". And it does indeed work quite well for that and make you profile more colorful.

-Why give rep?
Rep should be given to show appreciation when you think the poster has put extra effort into their post. Usually rep worthy posts stand out more than the average post. The most common reasons for giving rep comedic, witty, intelligent and helpful posts. Although rep can be given for almost any other reason as long as "you" think it worthy. This of course does not include posts that break any rules.

-What is rep power and how you get it..
Rep power is how much another posters rep count is influenced when you add or subtract reputation from them. To find your rep power, log in and go to the front page(www.skaterscafe.com). Scroll down until you see a column titles "User Cp" your username. In this small profile it your rep power will be visible.
Your rep count is influenced by the length of time you've been registered to Skater's Cafe, your post count and reputation. For every 180 days you've been registered, 500 posts or 100 rep points you have your rep power goes up by one point

-How much rep/rep power you start with?
Every member starts out with 1 dark green gem(See Here (http://www.skaterscafe.com/images/Infusion/reputation/reputation_green.gif)) of positive reputation. The point count for this gem is 1.

Every members starts out with neutral rep power. Neutral rep power is shown as a gray gem. See Here. (http://www.skaterscafe.com/images/Infusion/reputation/reputation_grey.gif) Members with neutral reputation can still give out rep, but they have no points to add to the receiver's rep count. The person rep'd still receives the comment you send them. Though over all it is the thought that counts isn't it? You will need 10 reputation points and 10 posts in order for your rep power to have any effect on another's reputation count.

-What is rep count/points?
Reputation counts(reputation points) are the exact amount of rep you have in numbers. You can find out your reputation count by going into any of your posts and click the Ying-Yang sign in the same place you would click to rep another person.

-What are rep gems?
Rep gems are the method of display for your reputation count. There are currently 3 different gems and a sun(4th gem). After five of each of the first 3 gems you move on to the next gem(Dark green bar- Light Green bar-Gold bar-Sun). After the 5th sun no new gem is assigned currently, so you just keep gaining suns. Their appearance and values are as follows..

1 Dark bar = 16 points. http://www.skaterscafe.com/images/Infusion/reputation/reputation_green.gif
1 Light bar = 32 points. http://www.skaterscafe.com/images/Infusion/reputation/reputation_greenh.gif
1 Gold bar = 240 points. http://www.skaterscafe.com/images/Infusion/reputation/reputation_gold.gif
1 Sun = 1440 points. http://www.skaterscafe.com/images/Infusion/reputation/reputation_goldstar.gif

-Rep spamming/consequences.
Spamming rep means to be constantly spreading rep for an unfit reason, or simply no reason at all. We do have a system in place to prevent extreme cases, though spamming rep is still plenty possible. In a case where you see a user spamming rep please pm an admin and describe to him the situation with a link to the spamming. If you are caught spamming rep you may be banned for an undetermined amount of time. With consecutive offenses the length of time is increased to the point will you will be banned Permanently.

-How to deal with undeserved rep.
If you disagree with how someone has given you reputation please pm one of our administrators if you want it requested to be removed . As with anyone on Skater's Cafe, be polite, patient and show respect. They have full right to decline your request, so always try to explain yourself in the best way possible.

-Don't give positive reputation because you think negative reputation was unjust.
Never should we see someone giving out positive reputation for a reason that isn't that you agreed with what they said exceptionally. That means no giving out positive reputation because you've seen negative rep given out when it wasn't deserved. This works the other way as well, don't give out negative rep because you seen a post that was positive rep'd that wasn't deserved. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about what deserves/ doesn't deserve rep. Just because you think another's rep comment was undeserved doesn't mean is was. Everyone is different, and with these differences our opinions vary. As long as rep isn't spam'd, trolled for, traded for, asked for, or given to cancel out another rep it's probably an alright post to rep. Though always remember you can only give out 5 reps a day, so make sure you have enough for the posts that deserved it the most. For farther details on what you should do about un-deserved rep, re-read the paragraph above this one.

-Don't ask for rep.
Under no condition should you ever ask for reputation. Not only is it against the rules, but you usually end up with less rep then you originally had. Some members have a habit of giving out negative reputation when they see someone trolling for rep, so be careful for what you wish for. Anyone found trolling for rep will be punished in the forum of a ban for an undermined about of time. Depending on the severity of the situation it could be anywhere from a few months to a permanent ban. The same rule stands if you're found trading rep with another member.

-Difference between giving negative rep and reporting.
Many members have trouble distinguishing between the time when they should report and when they should give neg rep. The report button is a feature used to alert a moderator with a member has broken a rule. As it says when you press the button, "This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts." As well, we are a family forum who's intent is to welcome adults and children of all ages. So any material you find inappropriate for "all ages" should also be reported. This includes vulgar language, pornography(links or photographs), links to illegal file sharing sites(Or just anything illegal in general), and any discussion about drugs(Legal or not). This rule is used loosely to allow as relaxed an atmosphere as we can possibly give you without being too lenient. If you're unsure if you should report or not, do it anyways. It's always better to be safe. As well, anything found Here (http://www.skaterscafe.com/showthread.php?t=2) should also be reported.
Negative reputation should be given out if something typed was found offensive, rude or disrespectful.

-You do not loose rep when giving rep.
It means exactly as the title is read. You do not lose any rep when giving out rep. You're rep power is simply added to the members rep point count. Check your rep count Here (www.SkatersCafe.com) by signing in a scrolling down the page.

-Spreading rep around.
In the situation when you find you're giving reputation to the same person consecutively a small note will appear if the system will not let you rep the person. To our understanding every time you give someone reputation you must spread it to at least 5 people before you rep that person again. Also, you cannot rep twice for one post.

-Rep limit for one day.
There is also a limit on the amount of reputation you're allowed to give each day. Regardless of who you give it to, negative or positive, you can only click the "Add to reputation" button 5 times a day. Only the admins have it differently, although this rule applies to every other member of Skater's Cafe.

-Don't make threads about rep.
Self explanatory rule, Don't make any threads asking about removing reputation. They will be locked and deleted. If you disagree with how someone has given you reputation please pm one of our administrators. As with anyone on Skater's Cafe, be polite and show respect. They have full right to decline your request, so always try to explain yourself in the best way possible.

-When will you get your next reputation bar.
We refuse to add a response in regard to this in our guide. Most theory's don't usually pan out, as well it's entirely unnecessary. You will get your next bar whenever it you you gain the reputation points required for it. Learning exactly how many points you need doesn't make the time pass faster or help you in any way.

If anyone has any further questions about reputation please feel free to pm one of the Creative team members or post your question in this thread. Try to refrain from making separate threads about rep. This guide is meant to answer every question you have about the rep system. If you have a question, ask us so we can keep our guide as informative as possible.

Thank you.

Perfect Guide!
What's up with everybody making a rep guide?

That was exactly the problem, people were always making guides and none of them were entirely "complete". So the new C-team got together, mangled their ideas and built a guide that should answer "every" question about the system.

Nice guide. Ok I do have a question. Why is it that it doesn't show the little box under posts that people got repped for. Like where it used to say for example "baller7764 agrees:good post." I can't see that any more. Was it taken out or is it just me?

Shouldn't this thread be stickied? It will be of next to no use if users have to search past at least a page of threads to find it..

YES I think this thread should be stickied!! Senor Waffles guide is showing up more than ours, no offence to him. This one is the cafe's OFFICIAL rep guide, for the cafe, made by the cafe staff, so I think it should be stickied. We need to make sure that Se~nor's thread doesn't contain any information that contradicts what ours is saying. There are many people here that seem like they are easily confused. I'll pm pathtek or someone if you guys haven't already.

Edit: to Sq22, I changed it to prevent any further confusion :)

The information about the rep values is old. It's out of date and confusing people, so that's why I said it should be closed.

From what I'd read it was very close if not spot on. Even if it weren't, it's better than anything else out there. And seeing as he'd put a lot of work into trying to perfect it, it should be still be allowed to continue.

I'm not actually seeing it right now. Did it get moved or deleted? I still can't find a reason why..

Yeah I don't access to view it anymore; that leads me to belive it was deleted. The rep values though were for the old reputation system values. All the other information in his guide was answered in this guide, so I guess all it was doing was confusing people (from the posts I read in it.)

If you mean custom user titles, you have to wait until you have more posts. Go read the rest of the stickied forum-specific threads for a detailed explanation.

Edit: If you mean the search Tags when you are posting a new thread, just type them in the Tags box under the post body.

Hey, thanks for the guide. I have a question, What does the grey colored gem mean?

That means either

a) You have 0 rep points
or
b) If it's in your user cp. Someone repped you and they have 0 rep power.

How come in my User CP, i have 4 reps, but whenever i post, i only have 2 Gems?

Gems are worth different ammounts. So if everyone that repped you had 1 rep power you would still only have 1 or 2 gems. Now if they all had 20 rep power or something you would have more gems.

What's the difference between rep power and rep points?

unoriginal
09-02-2008, 07:57 AM
rep points is how many you have, it determines how many gems or stars or whatever show under your name
rep power is how many points you give or take away from someone when you rep them.

If someone has negative rep, do they get negative rep power?
