View Full Version : freestyle deck review

after nearly 6months of freestyle ive managed to skate quite alot of boards. Mainly becouse i was searching for the right one. The following review is my personal opinion. And its not a debate.

First board
sk8kings primoslide deck
this was my first ever freestyle board and if i wasnt motivated it would most likely be my last. After riding it for a few days it seemed to get better. But the nose was awful and the tail had barely any shape. It in my opinion was square. 2nd issue with this complete was the trucks. it came with trackers. Which in my opinion were AWFUL. I know most people like them. But when learning nh pogo tricks last thing you want is a king pin stabing you in the kneecap
over all

6/10 for the over all complete
4/10 for the deck
3/10 for the trucks "mainly becouse well they held the wheels on ha"
8/10 for the wheels "crown jewels are odd but they arent bad"
10/10 for the bearing "i was quite happy with the oust bearings"
7/10 for the skid "quite large and the screws always came undone
7/10 for the shipping "took about 6days"

second board
keith renna X model from outlook
As most of you have heard outlook has AWFUL shipping. Case in point. I ordered this outlook board before i ordered my sk8kings hoping it would be in by my birthday. sadly it wasnt. from order to skating it took over 2months. and outlook never replyed to my emails. The one response was "death in the family" which they seem to tell anyone. ok back to the deck
The shape was acturally very good. it reminded me of a street deck but with a smaller width "about 7.25" and i noticed right away the board its self was far better then the sk8kings. Both nose and tail were equal and both very blunt. which i like very much. After nearly a month of skating this deck i needed a chance only becouse the nose started chiping due to not skating a nose skid and attemping 5050 tricks on it.

8/10 for the deck "pretty good shape"
1/10 for the shipping "shipping took nearly 2months and i wouldnt order from them again"

3rd deck
keith butterfield decomposed

After hearing many people tell me decomposed was the best company i desided to try them out. After a quick email to keith butterfield "questioning him on the deck design" i desided to email witter and place a order. And i must say ordering with witter is one of the best things you could do. He helped me pick out parts and was very nice the entire time. After placing the order i waited it. after about 5days it came in and to my suprise it came with nearly 20stickers and a free dvd. So i set the deck up and within the first session i learned ALOT of tricks heres a link to prove so ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g358xepFEZo ) .. Along with this order i desided to get new trucks. mainly becouse trackers killed my shins and knee. I desided to go with uptrucks. Based around the "no kingpin" logic. for the first few min you notice your board is very stable and DOES turn side to side. which is odd considering theres nothing to pivot on. Over all this was one of my favorite decks to ride.

9/10 for the deck "very good shape, nice blunt nose and tail, plus a good size"
10/10 for the trucks "up trucks are my favorite fs trucks and i cant say anything bad about them"
9/10 for the skid "powell skids are the best ive ridden"
10/10 for the service "witter is a great guy and always includes goodies with orders"

4th deck
witter cheng heartless b*tch deck
After having such a good run with my butterfield i desided to try another model from decomposed. The witter cheng model. not only becouse witter is one of my favorites but becouse i really wanted to try the shape out. After placed the order i was greeted yet again with loads of stickers and yet another "and different" dvd. once i skated the board i knew i would be learning ALOT on it heres a clip of me first skating it ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCRrMkXSiC4 ) .. Sadly after only 2weeks of riding it i desided to learn broken fingers on rough ground. Nearly KILLING the entire tail.

8/10 for the deck " the butterfield was better but the witter was still better then its others and had very stable rails and a nice tail"
6/10 for the skids "blistard skids arent the best and wore down quite fast"
10/10 for the shipping "best in the biz"

5th deck
chaos bros cb2 model
after killing my tail on the witter deck i desided it was time for a change. SO i talked to mario "dog4life" about chaos and how i would contact them. So after i got the email address for john leathers i emailed him asking about the decks and such. After a few questions and some offers i ended up getting a cb2 model for the normal price and got free grip for around 42 bucks "quite a good deal i must say with free shipping"
After about 6days my deck was at the house. I instently set one up and was AMAZED. The cb2 was pretty much all my old boards mixed into one deck. very blunt nose and tail, good concave, straight rails, and i got the foamirca design so it was very slick and very good. heres a clip of me riding it ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVXeM4LhdWs )
After nearly 3weeks with this deck i must say its holding up quite well "considering im not riding skids"

9/10 for the deck "only downside is the nose and tail are slightly odd which makes finding a fiting skid quite hard"
10/10 for the shipping " john rivals witter for great service"

I'm sorry, but I got confused with the boards and the pictures. Still, you put hell loads of efforts into this. Reps+

I'm gonna start recommending this thread to those people who can't use searchbar and make threads about what board to get. This thread really does help a lot.

Lol the witter's tail looks like you killed it. I think this may be the best freestyle board review yet, or one of the best. You pretty much included everything from bearings to shipping!

not for me and not for the makers
since i live in texas and its around 100degrees year round the plastic isnt super stiff
so their not that tight

In my opinion i think they are. I'm pretty slim so thats probably why they feel so tight for me.

They have bigger freestyle boards. Small School skateboards (www.smallschool.biz) makes custom shapes/sizes.

my uptrucks feel like they're a hunk of welded steel, even in summer, when it's around 100 degrees out. it's weird... mine don't turn at all, but if i land with too much weight on one side, i immediately get wheelbite. So, i get the worst parts of having super tight trucks and really loose ones at the same time.

depends on your definition of 'work.' they hold the wheels on so i can do railstands and whatnot, but actually rolling on them is a bit of a chore.

hmm I really like my uptrucks and it's been about 40 degrees here lately and I still get some side to side movement while skating them. They're tight, but I wouldn't say too tight. Guess it all depends on what you like though.

Is that due to them being the old one's and you having them for a while, or because of the way their made. Im hoping its not the second one.

arling777
12-01-2007, 11:08 PM
It's how they're made. They have released newer versions at least once, and stopped selling the previous version. They're a totally different take on trucks so I'd be surprised if they got it right first go.

Your first question on what he meant by old also raises a totally different question about how they wear...does anyone know if they start to get looser over time? It'sd be annoying to have the one you pivot on wear down and become loser than the other.

Callum Bowran
12-02-2007, 06:07 AM
They do wear down after time. They then get to a point where the 'wing' of the truck (the bit from the hanger to the baseplate) splits, and that is the time to buy a new truck.

arling777
12-02-2007, 02:44 PM
Callum, how long does that take...? Trucks usually last me a long time but money's tight without a job during the school year. I'd rather have a pair of trucks that lasts me 2-4 decks (year to a year and a half) and be able to spend money buying new decks, not new trucks.

Dylan, Why are you not using a skid or skids on your cb2?

arling777
12-02-2007, 04:26 PM
A note on Witter's service. I emailed him asking if he had more pictures of three of the decks, and he emailed me back saying he'd take some, and asked me what angles I'd like.

Edit: and this is on a sunday after noon...he emailed me back very quickly too.

becouse i dont need them
the tail hasnt worn down at all
even tho i have done numorious pogo tricks and 5050 tricks
mario was saying his friend isnt riding skids either and his board has lasted over 3months.
i wanted to put that to a test
and so far my board isnt messing up at all

Ah yeah, mi friend is using a Cb3... and already reached 3 months of skating , no skids and still good to ride :)

It's the most long lasting deck of the CB series ( it's the biggest so....)

Callum Bowran
12-03-2007, 01:07 PM
Callum, how long does that take...?
All depends on the type of skating and the skater themselves. I weigh 10 1/2 stone, and used to skate at least an hour a day. They lasted me for around a year; the new set I've got are still fine after 5 months.

What's up with that formica stuff on the CB boards? Id it supposed to make it last longer or what?

from what ive heard it does last longer
and wears down alot slower
it flexs a bit more then wood as well which helps with kickbacks "for me"

and after riding a cb2 for about a month and so far a cb3 for a week
without skids theyve managed to hold up very well
with little to no wear

i think smallschool has formica as well?

ask dog4life
he knows loads me about the stuff then i do ;)

Formica decks from Chaos are much more flexible and have an excellent pop.
They also feel much lighter then traditional decks.

Formica = excellent for all rolling tricks, flips faster, great pop

Normal CB decks wood = i think they are better for stationary tricks and have a different "feeling"

About small school : hmmm, i know they got some decks from chaos bros and put their graphics on it.
So it's possible that JEremy has some formicas around.

Any reviews for a sk8king jester retro deck? I'm thinking of buying for my next fs board...

bbengyak
05-12-2008, 06:06 PM
^Never ridden it before but I know a few things about it. Single kick, this means it has a flat nose a only a kick tail. It is similarly shaped to the old Mullen Chessplayer deck from back in the 80s. Also the concave in the kicktail is very mellow like an 80s style board. If you take a close look at the decks Mullen rides in some old videos from the 80s you can see what I am talking about and this could be a bit of a transition to make if you're riding a street board or even a double kick freestyle board.

That's all I've got on it anyway, I know Matt Gokey has at least ridden so maybe he could give you some info on it.

ah yes, the jester retro. 27 3/4" x 7 3/8" with a wheelbase of 12 1/2". 8 ply maple, blunted tail and slightly blunted nose. what i like especially about the jester is the tail. i noticed that the mellow tail was mentioned earlier in the topic, and it truely does set the jester apart from other decks. FYI, mellow tails make nh50-50s and pogos easier. plus if you skate trucks with a big kingpin, the mellow tail wont jam the pin into your leg as badly. its a good solid board, which will last a long time. however i do suggest getting different skids than the sk8kings ones, they wear out much to quickly. or, you could get the same shape custom cut with custom cut skids that last much longer from j at small school.....<SP:):icon_woow

Sweet I thought the review was excellent I do agree with you on decomposed being the best company for fs boards but i say small school is doing a very good trade. and considering now decomposed has like one single kick( which I'm not interested in) I will probs have to go small school for my next purchase.

good review....
