Hey.
Well it looks like this is an older post, but if you haven't already made your choice by now, I'll throw my two cents in.
They're both entry-level DSLRs, but you can expect awesome pictures once you grow accustomed to the controls and more comfortable with photography in general. I always lean towards the Canons a) because I have a few and I'm comfortable with them and b) the menu/control layout is just WAY easier to navigate with the Canons. This is of course just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth. Pro's use both Nikon and Canon, and I bet you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between what photos were taken with what camera when looking at a magazine or on the internet.
I hate to give this same tired answer, but if you have a Future Shop or any camera store around you, your best bet is to go and try the floor models that they have out. Which ever camera feels better in your hands and is easier for you to use is better for you. They both have good flash and lens systems, and are WIDELY compatible with any number of accessories you can think of buying. It really just comes down to what feels better in YOUR hands.
Or maybe it just comes down to which ever camera is cheaper when you actually decide to make your purchase :)

i dont think you'll notice a HUGE difference in the quality of their pictures if you are just starting out with photography, but if this is your second or third camera, i would save up a little more and get a nikon d80, or if you need to buy one straight away get the d40x.
a lot of people are canon people, but then just as many are nikon people. they are both awesome cameras. i personally think nikon makes better quality cameras, but i would recommend going to your local camera shop and asking the guys there. they are very knowledgable and most of them are pro photographers. ive been to 4 or 5 camera shops in my area and all the guys there are really helpful and gave me a lot of good advice, but they also all said that nikon is way better than canon. ive tried canons, and they are pretty good, but like i said.... you cant really tell the difference in the photo quality if your just starting out... just the difference in the features and learning curve.
peace

im pretty sure the 400D is the rebel xti right? i was thinking about getting that as my first camera but i went into a few camera shops and the guys told me the XTi is just horrible. like it has a horrible quality of build and stuff but ive read lots of good reviews. if you want to talk to proffessionals or look at some reviews i would recommend going to skateperception.com... thats what i did for research

The nikon is only compatible with very few lenses because of the AF in the lenses.

If you're deciding between a D40 or a 400D, go with the 400D (not even because I'm a canon owner) because the 400D has the built-in AF motor, so you'll be able to use AF on any AF-supported lens. Whereas the D40 needs lenses with AF motors.
