What's your exact problem. The common 2 are getting into it/getting it to slide or landing it once you come of the end of the object.
This trick...kinda gives you the false impression that you'll naturally go forward easily since you're grinding facing basically forward but with your front end dipped down it really digs into the grind. I guess if you've been skating for 7 years you already know this.
Basically....you'll want to lean back ALOT more then you'd first think, which can get dangerous if you accidently land in lipslide or you miss completely and slide off the side....which leads to the next tip. Dont approach at a lipslide like angle. My first mistake was that id come up at an angle and slam into the grind because id think "omg..smith grind..hard trick" and put too much effort into it. When you come up to it...go about parallel...and think 50-50...not lipslide. Try and land smoothly into it.
(Note....this part only applies to rails. More or less round rails) The second thing...with most grind tricks your body kinda takes over on the landing after you've been skating for a long time. A little pressure on the tail..lift on the nose to clear your back wheels off a nosegrind, turning 90 degrees out of a slide. But with smith grinds its not so simple. Your body will either do the "come off the rail in the smith position and center it out in the air directly after" or the " lift with your tail" like coming out of a 5-0/50-50. While this works sometimes, usually when you come off the board will kind of do half a flip on the way out. This feels REALLY unnatural at first because you get used to the feel of everything then it just flips underneath you without you doing anything. This gets kinda dangerous because you're expecting to ride away. What i usually do is i have to remember not to let my body take over here, and sort of lift my weight up at the end (not jump...sort of like a powerslide where you just lift your weight for a second) then stomp my feet down. (But if you might be like most people :p and just land more naturally and all this part did was make everything more complicated.)
As for on ledges, you might have to lean back a little more, this time lift on the tail when you came out because sometimes you wont automatically straighten out upon the landing.
Sorry if this was more confusing then helpful. It was a lot less complicated in my head but i suck with words. This is still a trick i havent found my "natural feel" for yet myself. Just make sure you're going pretty fast and the obstacle slides perfectly.
