View Full Version : The X-Games takes vert back.
Berishman 04-15-2008, 03:52 PM Looks like there was so much controversy surrounding the X-Games decision to drop vert competitions that they decided they would bring it back.

"ESPN has decided to continue its 13-year tradition of vert competitions at this year's X Games. Over the past month ESPN has engaged in many conversations with the X Games BMX and Skateboard vert athletes in an attempt to transition the Vert discipline into one featuring a skatepark course design. While many athletes were initially receptive to the idea, the majority of them have indicated to ESPN that they would prefer to compete on a halfpipe.
ESPN will also continue its plans to hold SuperPark as a new discipline for skateboarding and BMX at the X Games while working with the athletes to better define exactly how the SuperPark course will be designed.
The X Games has always had a commitment to the athletes and our consistent communication with them has allowed us to collectively grow this event to where it is today," said Chris Stiepock, General Manager, X Games. "In this particular case the communication took many turns but a consensus by the athletes has emerged that has lead us to reinstate Vert as an X Games discipline this year. We will continue to work with the athletes to make the X Games relevant and successful."
Pro Skateboarder and 14-time X Games medalist, Bob Burnquist, said: 'I think it's great that ESPN will continue to have a Vert contest, and I'm looking forward to working with them to make sure the vert competition at the X Games is the best that it can be.'"
Kowycz 04-15-2008, 04:05 PM Vert is awesome but I don't particularly enjoy watching it.
I imagine everyone who watches skateboarding or BMX appreciates how difficult vert halfpipe is, without adding anything. Who are they trying to spice it up for?
RIP_BOB_GNARLY 04-15-2008, 05:15 PM I am glad it is back. But, I think it is weird how they were trying to get rid of vert instead of big air after what happened to Jake Brown.
swordman540 04-15-2008, 05:16 PM Wait, they took it back?
Or are you saying if they SHOULD take it back?

Read the article. lol
They decided they were bringing it back.
They tried to kill it, but then changed their mind.
lol.
If a mod wants to change the thread title into something a little less confusing that would be splendid.
;)

I read it but I skipped some part, so I was still confused.
Anyways, awesome. It created so much debates everywhere I went, so its good it all stopped :)

vert doesnt appeal to 12 year old girls which is the new key demographic for extreme sports. girls have money and need a place to spend it, why not have them spend it on skateboards?
AlmostaSkater14 04-15-2008, 06:27 PM I really like that they took the vert back. i was pretty pissed they took it out. i always liked watching it. it just doesnt bore me as much as it probably should bore me.

UH disagree. NATAS KUPUS is the one that made the sport popular again, and then Mullen made up more tricks, making it more popular, then tony made vert/skateboarding popular in a mainstream way. So give credit where its due.
Oh and vert is sweet. glad they brought it back.

Hahaha, soooo true.
It sure as hell worked too, this thread of street skaters declaring their love for vert is proof!
