View Full Version : How do you know you're ready for a handrail? Irideplanbs 04-26-2008, 06:59 PM So, I've really, really been wanting to try handrails for almost a year now. But I just want to know when you thought you were ready. punkybambi 04-26-2008, 07:04 PM when you are sure you gonna do it and have no fear Decked Out 04-26-2008, 07:51 PM I got an idea get a mate to video or just watch you riding up and ollying the stairs that the hand rail is on....If he rekons you will make it onto the rail then go for it Beef 04-27-2008, 10:34 AM Just make sure you can do rails on flat consistant, and then try a low handrail first =) ethiosk8a 04-27-2008, 10:39 AM practice olling over the rail then l8r try to catch urboard onto the rail. GNAR 04-27-2008, 10:39 AM Make sure you can do sloped rails, and keep your balance centered. djkells 04-27-2008, 11:01 AM ^^^like GNAR said try making some ghetto down rails to practice. Try them if you feel comfortable, and only if you are going to go for it. Bailing on hand rails isn't to smart. AaronBautista 04-27-2008, 01:52 PM practice olling over the rail then l8r try to catch urboard onto the rail. don't do that the hardest part of doing your first is getting over the height of the rail ollieing would be alot harder to clear, since your first trick on the rail is probably gonna be a backboard and you only have to get your front truck over just make sure you get some speed, so you can hit the rail lower blaznmonkey 04-27-2008, 08:03 PM i have no idea good luck tho missing_no 04-27-2008, 08:38 PM Honestly I plan on never trying them But I think you shouldn't even have to ask yourself "am i ready" You should feel ready i guess what I'm saying is stop asking yourself if you are good enough to do one.....just keep skating, and having fun, keep progressing, and eventually the opportunity will present itself and you will feel confident enough to try one. But please don't go trying one thinking "omg, am i ready for this I could get hurt".....cause chances are in that state of mind you will be. handrails are serious business. FallenStarsSk8 04-27-2008, 08:42 PM yeah defintely, you should like stack a few bricks or something under one end of a rail, and make sure u can hit it 100% The Beard 05-27-2008, 04:39 PM yea ollie a 5 stair, hit a small down rail. do both of those and you can do a handrail. theyre all the same. all go downwards so the faster you go. the less you have to ollie and vice versa. kr3wdude59 05-27-2008, 04:41 PM IHOP n' Go On a serious note. If you have grass near where your rail is, put the end on there so that if you fall, your at least falling on grass. 2h2skater 05-27-2008, 04:49 PM when you feel your ready to. its all you and your fear once your over your fear then you can do just about anything phlap 05-28-2008, 06:35 AM Just take a look at it, roll up and think "**** it, I'm gonna' do it." Slee 05-28-2008, 10:06 PM Harden up and huck Assassin1 05-29-2008, 12:40 AM Make sure you can grind a small rail well, also whenever I try something that I might mess up I always bring a camera so it'll look cool if I do it well or get hurt, I know it sounds dumb but it makes it all worth it. aussiead 05-29-2008, 05:09 PM try to boardslide a 5 or 6 set rail so u only have to slide a couple feet and IF u bail ull miss the rail because u dont have to be right on top of the rail thats how my freind done his first rail KrispyKicks 05-29-2008, 05:11 PM Well first try a 45-50 foot high by 200 foot long kinked rail.If you get that then you can pretty much do any handrail, and that right there is what you need. CONFIDENCE. POUNSTER 06-01-2008, 07:55 PM when you try it Shorty's_Kid 06-01-2008, 08:11 PM Handrail Checklist: [ ] Can ollie a 4 stack or more [ ] HAve absolutley no trouble on a steeply-sloped rail [ ] Can get a fairly tall flatbar with ease [ ] No longer even phased by 6-8 stairs If you can check off all four of those, chances are your ready for a handrail. But don't skip one, or you'll end up like me, almost getting yourself on Scarred. (Thank god that landing wasn't concrete, or my face would be GONE.) savedskater43 06-01-2008, 08:21 PM i havent done one but for confidence wear a helmet and cup incase you bail ;) PirateMafioso 06-04-2008, 08:21 AM 1. When you got pop 2. After practicing on a slanted rail and have it mastered. 3. Your never ready. I dislocated my shoulder or broke a clavical, i never went to the doctor, on a handrail. Now my left shoulder has a bone sticking out cause it didnt heal properly. And ive been hitting handrails for a while now. This one was a smaller one as well. Vrait 06-04-2008, 10:34 AM Just master flatbars, round rails, and down rails at parks. Get as good at board slides as you can, every type of boardslide to. The better you are the easier it is. Hand rails are A LOT easier then the look. Just get you boardslides on lock, and be able to ollie that stair set on lock. Its best, lets say you can ollie a 9, but are trying to boardslide a 5. That way there is allot less fear. If you got you boardslides down pact, the only hard thing about handrails is fear. And all in all, just master the downrails at skateparks. They are pretty much the same thing, but not nearly as dangerous. dylanbrow 06-04-2008, 01:58 PM try and olling that high, then approach it, use caution JJBDude 06-05-2008, 08:18 AM Just take a look at it, roll up and think "**** it, I'm gonna' do it." That's the correct attitude to take in my opinion. I did it and although I ****ed up bad I did at least have the balls to try it (even though I nearly lost them :(). I advice to build up to one slowly by trying rails getting larger and larger, it should be easy for you then I can imagine. swordman540 06-05-2008, 08:24 AM If you can grind a hubba And a down rail and can boardslide on lock all types of rails (like round, flat, broad, high rails, low rails) you're pretty much good to go The only thing holding youback, i think, is fear |
