View Full Version : Staircases/Gaps
ThatsLife 04-27-2008, 08:55 PM Well latly I've been going for a large gap, about a 10 stair gap. Anyway, I've stuck it a few good times and got my share of eating it, but I just seem to always pussy out on some runs, I know that my confidence is getting in the way because I'm not staying committed to the ollie, I usally end up kicking out the board and bailing mid way, although sometimes I actully try and stay committed.
Are there any ways that could help me get more confidence, I mean I'm sure if I just keep practicing at this and out of countless tries I'll land it, but I mean now it is in general, how do I man up more to try new staircases and gaps.
My next goal is 13 stair, and I know for sure I'll be pussying out but I don't want to bail so much and land it once out of 20+ bails.
Advice please?

^^ Thats very true.
I was being a pussy to try a 5 stair (it had pretty big stairs). So I bought a energy drink, went back and did it 3rd try. 1st and 2nd try I crashed so bad, really didn't hurt though cause I was so hyped.
Let me tell you something from experience, bailing on big drops hurts a lot more then trying to stick it every time.
Whenever you run up to it, just do it.
Even the first try, stick it.
After that, you'll know you can do it.
street skater 04-28-2008, 12:28 AM Maybe listen to music, that could hype you up to stick to it.
colorado 04-28-2008, 10:57 PM Energy drinks? lol, energy drinks are a fake energy that is almost as unreal as suger pills.

That's the exact truth. If you don't think you're going to land it before you push off then you won't. Just make sure you know you can land it
jred88 04-28-2008, 11:08 PM Remember that in most cases falling only hurts for a few minutes.
ccv1991 04-29-2008, 01:57 AM ^yeah he has a point there, some gaps just seem more gnarly then they actually are.
I think kicking your board away is even mroe dangarous than keeping it under you =)

^^u could hit a car or a lawyer or something
then youd be in for a lawsuit
arto-geoff 04-29-2008, 08:41 AM you just gotta realise you're gonna get hurt more if you kick it away than if you land on it. seriously i used to kick away alot but now i realise you start to hurt your heels and stuff that if you stick it cause the board takes some of the impact away.
lemons7 04-29-2008, 10:03 AM Everybody's said it, but not what it is. haha. You need confidence, don't think about bailing, don't think you'll not land it. A lot of this goes on before you try, and mid air. Of course you'd want to bail if you KNOW you won't make it, but if feel like you've got it, just keep with it.
wurley 04-29-2008, 10:06 AM try jumping of without the board n landing how you would land with a board, your mind tells you to spred your legs out when you are landing to brase for the landing. but if you train your mind to land your feet right. Then you can try it with your board under your.:icon_smil
ccv1991 04-29-2008, 02:10 PM ^it wouldn't be very easy to do that over a thirteen without risk of injury though. Then he would break his ankle be out for like 6 months and track you down and murder you because of your ****ty advice:).No I'm just kiddin but seriously that would be harder than ollieing the set I would think.
Mr.Skyblu 04-29-2008, 03:58 PM Damn I guess just skate bigger stairs like 8s for warming up, and them 10s seem smaller. Then just keep improving and ****.
EmericanSteeze 04-29-2008, 08:45 PM stop being a wuss and commit. ha.
but seriously, just tell yourself "okay, landing on the board this time" and land on the board. once you fall hard once your pain tolerance goes up, so you don't worry as much about it.
theskatingmonk 04-29-2008, 08:48 PM well you should try like a 8 set then work your way up thats how i learned from a couple of guys that skate by me they wer like if you try and puss out try something a little smaller and work your way up.
good luck
B.Bagley 04-30-2008, 06:29 PM just commit, think about how good youll feel whats u get that certain trick,. but number one rule dont over hype yourself. You will be somemuch cooler when you drop a bomb out of the blue and keep modest about it. Most people who self hype get no where because they think there the **** and styay there.
heartagram695 04-30-2008, 09:36 PM what helps me alot is i set a goal for myself and after trying it a few times and bailing i say to myself "ok so ill land it in 3 more tries" and that actually has worked most of the time for me with getting it on that third time or even before. and if you dont get it in that many tries just take a break, chill out, and go land it.
P.S. 300 posts!!! :icon_clap
FallenSkater 05-01-2008, 05:01 PM hm..what i do is : i warm up on small stairs/ledges and gradually work my way up to big ledges/stairs.
spectrum 05-01-2008, 05:48 PM Well i see alot of people giving alot of different advice but when i do big stairs i think about it and tell myself just do it countless times and look at the steps. Then i do it usually get it 2nd try or 1st.

Thats true and seems to work for me. Even if you only stick it partially. Thats how I did my first handrail too. The more I bail the more it psyches me out. If I even partially stick it, it makes it seem alot less scary.
Enjoi2 05-29-2008, 01:42 PM I go for it 3 times,, on the first I bail on the second I ride up and on the 3rd I commit
