A reminder that skitching IS dangerous, while yes, most of us will admit we have done it at one point in our lives, it is NOT safe by any means! One pothole and your eating pavement (or worse, hanging on the side, and getting run over by the rear tires). Just as a reminder, heres a recent article from the Seattle Times about a skater that is in critical condition after a skitching accident!
From the Seattle Times:

A 15-year-old Everett boy is listed in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center after he was hurt Tuesday while riding on a skateboard and holding onto a pickup.

The boy, whose identity hasn't been released by police, suffered head trauma when he fell off skateboard in the 3200 block of 56th Street Southwest and was run over, authorities said.

Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said the teen and another boy, also believed to be 15, were "skitching" — a term for holding onto a moving vehicle while skateboarding.

Everett Fire Department Assistant Chief Joe Johnston said both boys were holding onto the sides of the truck. When one of the teens struck a manhole cover he fell off the skateboard and was run over by the back tires of the truck, Johnston said.

"The truck was going 20 or 25 miles per hour when the accident occurred," Johnston said.

Goetz said the 17-year-old pickup driver and the second skateboarder, who was "skitching" on the other side of the truck, could face traffic infractions or criminal charges. Police are still investigating.

"That type of skateboarding was being done when I was a kid. It's not something we come across very often," Goetz said.

That is horrible, although they were having fun, I have to say I have never done that myself, i respect that most people dont want some "punk" kid (in their words) holding onto their car while driving.

Hey Pathtek, Don't mean to question you, and im pretty sure this is what i think it is, but how old, and where did you get that picture from? Couldnt help but notice 2 very old cars

hahaha, ok. thought that you might be disguising your punk skater ways as a kid and making it seem like some other kid take the fall :p

The solution:
When skitching, hang on to the rear bumper, NOT the passenger or driver's side windows.
Thats just dumb, and not safe.

lol.

I've never actually skitched, but If i ever DID, I wouldn't be dumb enough to hang on the side of the car.

I have skitched a couple times but I almost fell once when my friend decided to go 30-35 mils and hour. The speed was intense and I was yelling for him to slow down. But he's an ass and wouldnt. We are no longer friends, not due to that moment but for other things he did.

I have skitched, but never will again. The last time I skitched the ******* went way to fast and even though I let go I got speed wobble. I bailed and ate it hard, ended up with a severe concussion, 5 stitches in my head, and a bunch of cuts, scrapes, and bruises.

well this is why you don't skitch halfway up a car, step one of doing anything in life, especially something dangerous is don't be an idiot. These kids forgot about that one.

And thanks for the Back to the Future picture, those movies rocks my socks.

If you need speed, use a rope extension or a pulley system. I don't see the fun in skitching, too sketch.

^ ^ Yes, it is. ^ ^

I skitched a golf cart back in '02. Got speed wobble, wiped out and had a huge gash on my leg!

A couple years ago, I dated a woman with cerebral palsy. I used to skitch on the back of her powerchair. That was fun!!!

Wha? I am not quite sure I understand.

like he was holding on to the back bumper of the car, hit a pothole and his board stopped but he kept holding on to the bumper and it just fell off.

I skitched a friends car once, got up to around 20 mph, speed wobble hit me and I jumped off the board as high as I could. Funny thing when you see the ground coming at you at that speed... Suprisingly, my friend slammed on the breaks when he saw my board in his side mirror down the road. I didn't hit the pavement, but instead left a nice size dent in his trunk with my knees when I flew into it.

As long as it got peoples attention to ''read'' the article, thats all I looked for by adding the picture :)!

I've done this a couple of times. It's fun, but I was scared as hell about falling. I did it off an ice cream truck two times, that wasnt really scary. only going about 10 miles an hour isnt bad. But, the third and fourth time, i tightend my trucks as tight as i could, then my friend pulled me at about 20 m/ph. It was sweet, but really freaky. I wouldn't suggest doing it.

You should hang on to the rear kerbside quarter of the vehicle to allow a good view of the surface ahead. This allows you to let go should the vehicle start to move too fast.

Move across to the opposite quarter of the vehicle to change lanes or make a turn.
Always watch for oncoming traffic particularly when changing lanes or making a turn.

If you are moving at a similar speed to the vehicle when you take hold, the driver wont notice any additional load. Pay attention to the driver. Some are co-operative. Others freak out and try to shake you. Some will just call you an idiot.

Skating on the road is always a calculated risk and you should always have your wits about you. It can be dangerous. But you do what you have to to get places.

Wishing that guy a speedy recovery:-/
