I saw some D50 and D70 bodies for 400 or less some 350 or less. If you got to canon bodies I saw maybe 3 for 400 or less

both nikon and camera have a cheap 50mm f/1.8 that's supposed to be pretty good. nikons is around 100$ and canon's is around 70$, the nikon one wont autofocus on a D40, but it's built better than canons. they're both supposed to have pretty good image quality.
