View Full Version : Some Tips for Stairsets
strawhat5 05-28-2008, 09:21 PM I have some tips for people who might be thinking about of starting to jump stairsets. (These are all from personal experiences)
-Wear Gloves: this may seem weird but it could be helpful when doing 4+ stairs. You may not be used to the impact from the fall, and your upper body goes down and your hands could scrape against the floor. I got 3 cuts on my right hand from NOT falling. And i got a ton more on the left from actually falling.
-Place an obstacle you can ollie before the set. For example, you might be kinda scared to ollie the set, but you can ollie one deck consistently. I know people who placed decks right before a stairset so they could perfectly time the ollie, and they were used to it. it helped them get started on stairs and not being scared.
-As many tips state, imagine imagine imagine. Watch videos, get a feel of what stairs are all about, and just beleive in yourself and you will slowly build up the courage to do a very fun part of skateboarding. =)

ndib0804 05-28-2008, 09:34 PM if u cant ollie high would it be a bad idea 2 try 2 ollie just off of a ledge not a set?

To do stairs and ledges you dont need to ollie high all you need is to be going really fast.
Sk8r07 05-28-2008, 09:44 PM cool man but there is a 4 set that i want to ollie but there is a huge fence in the way that i can run into it...so do you have any tips for that

Keep trying until you hurt yourself and can't stand up.
ISkateZero 05-28-2008, 09:51 PM Gloves is a good idea, but I would not say but something before it.. thats how you get hurt.
blankboard42 05-28-2008, 09:56 PM Heres another tip: Go as fast as you know you will clear the drop you must bend ur kneees when u land or you will fall like a puppet. You may think the landing will hurt your feet but it won whatsoever.

I dont get what you mean.Do you mean after you land there is a huge fence because all ou would have to do is ollie the 4 stair then powerslide or bail after you land.

Ya, not bending your knees isn't a good idea, good tip.
xXSkater14Xx 05-28-2008, 10:51 PM Also go fast and don't think about it, it works better if your rushed.
First time i tried a 3 stair(and only time) we ran up it, skated to the other side had a run up to the other side. and skated fast as we could ollied the other side, i didnt think about one thing just poped the ollie landed, then fell off. lol but that doesnt matter. we had to get back across the street cause we weren't supposed to be over there and it was a church.
kflip2curbstomp 05-28-2008, 11:20 PM most three or four stair sets you can just acid drop over with enough speed
heartagram695 05-29-2008, 12:17 AM most three or four stair sets you can just acid drop over with enough speed
but thats not really the same as ollieing it.
AlmostaSkater14 05-29-2008, 12:22 AM it might not be the same as ollieng over it, but i know that for me it builds up confidence. it is pretty similar. if i acid drop over a stair set, then i know that i can ollie it just as easy. it gives you a feeling for how the landing is and how it is in the air and all that.
jakedaskater 05-29-2008, 01:04 AM honestly, i prefer ledges to stairs
just thought i'd throw that in
kflip2curbstomp 05-29-2008, 02:03 AM ledges are sick.
OwnageKingX 05-29-2008, 02:28 AM IDK. I skate ledges and enjoy them the most. But i skate stairs more often, because their easier to access and you can keep a better note on progression. If a 3 stair feels too easy, you know what to do... Skate that 4!
NativeSkater 05-29-2008, 03:11 AM -Wear Gloves: this may seem weird but it could be helpful when doing 4+ stairs. You may not be used to the impact from the fall, and your upper body goes down and your hands could scrape against the floor. I got 3 cuts on my right hand from NOT falling. And i got a ton more on the left from actually falling. When skaters bail after ollieing off a high object, a set being a good example, their first instinct is to land on their hand(s). And that's not a good idea, because they could break their hand(s), wrist(s), and even arms. Unless the object isn't that high and it's a soft landing.
phlap 05-29-2008, 05:17 AM Remember, that the higher an object is, and the less speed you use to cleart it, the more chance you have of stopping dead when you land, increasing your chances of hitting the dirt.
Speed is key...
strawhat5 05-29-2008, 06:58 AM Sk8er07, is the fence at or after the drop? if so just ollie it dont think about it then land and softly bail right before it. if its before... find another set hehe. Im also gonna edit it cause a good idea to get a feel for the drop is not only acid dropping but possibly doing a caveman off it. you can start cavemanning 3 stairs of the set (if its like a 5) then 4, then 5. this way youll get used to the impact
jonnym 05-29-2008, 07:33 AM To be honest, most of the tips in here are a load of rubbish.
Ok yeah you could wear gloves, but thats like saying wear a long sleeve tee and a full face mask, its unecessary.
Going fast is good, but only the amount of speed your comfortable with, otherwise you could end up really hurt.
Saying to not think about it is stupid. You need to think about what you have to do. Not thinking about falling is a better idea.
Bending knees definetly absorbs impact and helps roll away, but for the likes of 2-4 sets its not needed and will just give you more to worry about.
Work your way up. Curb, small drop, 2 stair, 3 stair, bigger drop.... just get confident first.
Bringing me to my last point, confidence is key, If you think you can do it, you can.
