View Full Version : I'm feeling a little nervous...
AthleteSK8 06-01-2008, 11:15 PM I've been skating since April 13th this year and I don't think I'm lookin' so hot. People that have been skating just as long as I have are apparantly bustin' tres and stuff. I can't even kickflip or heelflip yet. My best trick right now is a pop shove it, followed by nollie, boneless and toe side railstand. Anything that can get me on the right track? Am I trying to learn too hard tricks too early? Right now I'm working on my heelflip and I need help on how I can progress to get better. I just feel that I'm falling behind and I'm not gonna get good anytime soon. I don't want to take a year to finally land all the basic flip tricks. So I guess I'm asking what I'm doing wrong in terms of my progression.
All help is welcomed.
Thanks in advance!
tmasawaki 06-01-2008, 11:20 PM Dude your doing fine. I didn't master the kickflip in less than 2 months of skating. You are doing JUST fine. really.
ricta 06-01-2008, 11:21 PM Dude it doesn't matter how good you are, People learn at different paces. I have a friend thats been skating for eight months and all he can do is ollie. If you want more tricks then skate more. Theres no point in worrying about it. In my opinion your doing fine.
tmasawaki 06-01-2008, 11:21 PM And people progress at different speeds too.
Preston951 06-01-2008, 11:26 PM your absolutely fine right now. it took me around a year before i could kickflip. and im good now!
xXSkater14Xx 06-01-2008, 11:28 PM doesnt matter how good you are. just as long as your having fun.
loose bolts 06-01-2008, 11:48 PM don't worry all you need is practice, plus its only been 2 months, i didn't learn heelflips for almost a year
sk8rz_4_life 06-01-2008, 11:52 PM Dude, if people are busten tre's by less then 2 months then I must be doing something wrong haha I didn't start landing tre's for almost two years.

if you're going off the rate me section I guarantee you those are all lies.for a month of skating that's pretty good.. I didn't get kickflips FOREVER like 6 months.
Really don't worry about who can do this or who just did that. I can't stand it being around people like that. Learn whatever you want, and don't come on here and say you landed stuff. as harsh as it sounds, nobody really cares. just skate that's it.
sk8rz_4_life 06-01-2008, 11:57 PM The only time, "real skaters" care about how good you are is when you are playing skate because people hate losing.
jon24683210 06-02-2008, 03:53 AM if people are doing tres after like 2 months u should actually check and see they can instead of beating urself down about how far theyre ahead of u and everyone learns at their own pace it took me 5 months to get down heelflip practicing about an hour or less a day
Pathtek4 06-02-2008, 04:58 AM Dude, if people are busten tre's by less then 2 months then I must be doing something wrong haha I didn't start landing tre's for almost two years.
I was thinking something on the lines of this...Those people are either eating/sleeping/crapping skateboarding 24/7 or are exceeding the standards with just some crazy skill!
I wouldn't worry about it man...it will come to you in good time. Sometimes, to pick up things faster, you have to look at the bigger picture, and try different things. The best thing to do is work on your foot positions. Changing them up may result in you finding the ''easier'' way to get the board to do what you want it to do. Don't give up, rip it up!
phlap 06-02-2008, 05:13 AM You're good for how long you've been skating, I couldn't kickflip for 6 years, but I kept at it.
swordman540 06-02-2008, 05:36 AM You're good for how long you've been skating, I couldn't kickflip for 6 years, but I kept at it.
Dang, that's one big commitment right there.
hokus pokus 06-02-2008, 08:39 AM you are doing fine...
have you ever looked at those kids tre flips that have been skating only a few months?
usually never landed, if landed sketchy with no control.
i think the first year skating is learning you balance and control.
once you start to have that down, style will present itself and assortment of tricks
xXSkater14Xx 06-02-2008, 09:11 AM You're good for how long you've been skating, I couldn't kickflip for 6 years, but I kept at it.
wow 6 years. i thought 5 months was a long time. :/
imdesigner 06-02-2008, 09:14 AM dude dont worry about it, people all learn at different speeds. and for the most part i think you shouldnt be so worried about how other people are doing. skating is about having fun.
like what hokus pokus said, i also think the first year is about learning balance and control. it took me like a year and a half to two years to be able to kcikflip - and at the moment i would say you are doing pretty well.
ZephyrGod 06-02-2008, 11:09 AM Don't worry about what other people can do. I don't think anyone could be doing Tres after just a few months of skating. Esspecially as it took me a few months just to learn that trick on its own.
If you wanna get better, get inspired watch skate vid after skate vid and then go out and practice. If someone says your doing badly, just ignore themand skate on. Anyone who says that to people shouldn't be taken seriously.
If you ask me the best way to improve (and this is gonna sound corny) is to just enjoy yourself skating and do anything you feel like. Thats what skatings about after all.
Trebor 06-02-2008, 02:07 PM the most fun ive ever had skating was back when i was learning the basics
just go outside and skate for you.
tricks will come after a while
i couldnt heelflip until i had been skating for 10 months
skateandlive94 06-02-2008, 02:10 PM I've been skating for almost a year now and I still can't kickflip...
I amThe1 inUr80 06-02-2008, 03:39 PM hold on, these people your talking about have only bin skating since april 13th this year and are busting tre's????, not even two months and there busting tre's?
TheNoComplyKid 06-02-2008, 03:43 PM Come on man, progress at your own speed. Skateboarding isn't a race. You shouldn't feel bad that others are better than you. Skate, progress, and don't give a crap about what everybody says.
I usually get words of advice from my friends, and mostly myself...haha
But listen. Enjoy skateboarding, and you'll progress so fast that you'll be the most amazed person on the plannet. I promise you.

Thanks everyone. But especially you NoComplyKid, that's awesome advice.
kr3wdude59 06-02-2008, 06:43 PM I've been practicing heelflips for 2 years now. And I still done have them 10/10. Only like 6/10. So keep at it.
SOADsk8er 06-02-2008, 06:46 PM Yea dude your perfectly fine. it took me Three and a half years to land a kickflip
kflip2curbstomp 06-02-2008, 08:09 PM if you stop stressing and let it happen it will. like have you seen american pie? those kids try way too hard to get laid so it becomes like pussy-on-petistol. when they just get chill with it they get down get down. down put your tricks on a petistol or they will become like pussaliah
0ocircao0 06-02-2008, 09:53 PM Your doing great.
I see a lot of beginners wasting their time rolling really slow trying to do flip tricks when they can't even ollie up a curb yet. Learn to ride fast, do power slides, carve bowls, do ollies at speed, and feel comfortable with the board. Once those real basics are out of the way, the tech tricks will come so much easier.
I amThe1 inUr80 06-02-2008, 10:12 PM ^yea, thats like the fundamentals of skateboarding right there.
ForumSkater 06-03-2008, 12:22 AM Man, you're fine. It took me MONTHS to learn kickflips, don't worry. At the beginning, you have to be patient. Sooner or later after you learn the basic tricks, tricks'll start just flowing in. I've started to learn tricks every week now. I've been skating for a year BTW. Don't worry, you're completely OK. The one thing you don't want is to be a POSER. "OMG Y I DONT LAND THIS TRICK I DIDIT YESTERDAY." You have to be really patient and most importantly HONEST about your skating. Anywayz, good luck.
AthleteSK8 06-03-2008, 06:49 PM Thanks guys. :)
Aos00799 06-03-2008, 07:28 PM dude ur doin good i have been skatin about as long as you and i can't do a kickflip im still on the stuff ur doin so just relax and skate hard
zerosk8ter 06-03-2008, 07:32 PM if your bs'ing then ur doing fine. people that say there doing tre flips that early are juts trying to make themself sound really good when they probably cant even do shiz so yea ur doing fine
AthleteSK8 06-03-2008, 07:37 PM if your bs'ing then ur doing fine. people that say there doing tre flips that early are juts trying to make themself sound really good when they probably cant even do shiz so yea ur doing fine
What's that mean? I don't understand what you're tryina say.
jred88 06-03-2008, 07:51 PM You're doing fine for the length of time you've been skating.
It took me 6 months to learn to kickflip, and I've been skating about 2 and a half years. ;)
TheExtremist 06-03-2008, 08:44 PM Yah dude don't worry at all. I've been skating hmmmmm i guess about 5 1/2 years and i still can't do them. Never bothered to learn tres as they were too difficult and intimidating for me back then. That feeling just stuck i guess. Seriously, just keep trying and aim to get things naturaly and with consistency. That's what matters. I could probably get a good tre on film 10 tries later but whats the point?
eleventytwo 06-13-2008, 12:26 AM DUDE i've been trying to land a kickflip for 10 months now and still no luck =( all i land are varials =(
dont worry about it. it doesnt matter as long as youre having fun. it took me almost a year to kickflip. once you get one everything seems a lot easier though.
zeroordie13452 06-13-2008, 12:46 AM yah man it really doesnt matter if ur better than ur friends, as long as you are having fun. but i know how ur feeling, i felt the same way when it came to stairs. i was afraid that i was falling behind cuz after about 10 monthes all i could do was a 3, but today after about a year i ollied a 4 so im not that worried anymore lol. but when it comes to flip tricks, just ask ur friends that u skate with how they learned the trick and see if it makes sense to you, cuz thats how i did it. i asked my friend derrick how he landed his and after he showed me i landed it 3 tries later, and now i pretty much have em on lock. good luck man. but dont worry, be happy =]
iskateniketres 06-16-2008, 12:41 PM i just got my kickflips good and ive been skating for a year or more..haha you're doing great
mr. awesome 06-16-2008, 12:50 PM dont worry about it.
people learn at different speeds.
i know a guy who skated for like 3 months and he could do tres.
ive been skating for 7 or 8 years and i have only landed one tre. and i didnt know what i was doing hahah
AlmostaSkater14 06-16-2008, 12:56 PM Don't worry about it. Over time you will start to get better. It took me like a year to learn how to ollie. I'm not sure if I was totally concentrated on it 100% for that entire time, but i know that it took me a really long time. I've been skating trying to do tricks for a pretty long time now, and I'm still not very good at all. But i don't care. Just stick with it and it'll come soon.
