View Full Version : The Metal Thread
CapitolSkater 06-02-2008, 10:53 AM Hi, I'm CapitolSkater, unless you never noticed. I am fairly new, and I am posting a thread in the Band/music section. Now, I know someone here is into metal. Any kind of metal: Heavy, Grunge, Alternative, Nu, Hardcore, Death, Black, Doom, Blackened Death, Black Doom, Thrash, Groove, just any kind of metal. You can post what you like talking about here, anything at ALL about metal. Popular subjects are Disturbed and Behemoth. Please, feel free to post it here. Realy, I am not kidding, ANYTHING AT ALL RELATING TO METAL can be here! So, have fun!
I amThe1 inUr80 06-02-2008, 10:43 PM its so stupid, talking about metal i said to my freind, korn are pretty good, and he says, korn arent metal theyr grunge.... so stupid. all these genres are stupid, if its heavy, its heavy metal. no, thrash, grunge, death, hardcore, its just metal.
SkateThrash 06-02-2008, 10:49 PM Latley I've been listening to The Acacia Strain, Burn the Priest, and Bury Your Dead. You should listen to some of their stuff :)
I amThe1 inUr80 06-02-2008, 10:51 PM isnt burn the priest an album by lamb of god?
SkateThrash 06-02-2008, 10:53 PM It is Lamb Of God's old name. They were playing in a church ( Lol ) and the head of the church didn't like it and they got banned from playing in the church which was where all the gigs were going down so they changed there name to Lamb Of God so they could play in the church again. :) Soo not so much an album...
Ibanez 06-03-2008, 04:16 AM its so stupid, talking about metal i said to my freind, korn are pretty good, and he says, korn arent metal theyr grunge.... so stupid. all these genres are stupid, if its heavy, its heavy metal. no, thrash, grunge, death, hardcore, its just metal.
Whoa, whoa, whoa lets back it up a little first of all Korn is metal their Nu-metal like Slipknot and Kittie. Genres are needed in metal cause theres so many and the sounds of the bands are so different than any other form of music. I'll list a few genres and bands and you tell me their just metal after hearing them. Im not going to add EVERY branch of each genre of these just the big ones. But did you know that heavy metal is really a sub genre of rock, you can hear how much Ozzy, Led Zeppelin, and Iron Maiden sound like the rock bands of their times.
Death Metal (my personal favorite)
use of heavily-distorted guitars, harsh vocals that are low-pitched and/or growled, morbid lyrics, exceptionally fast-paced rhythms and melodies, frequent blast beats on drums, and complex song structures with multiple tempo changes.
Six Feet Under- Doomsday (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rw-286qu6KE) (Melodic death)
Cannibal Corpse- I Cum Blood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwfxmjE7yD4&feature=related) (Brutal death)
Fleshgrind- Burn Your World (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuo9R8T7BDY)
Carcass- Corporeal Jigsore Quandary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7oGGud2Jk4) (early Goregrind, later death metal, like this song)
Doom Metal
Slow and melancholic subgenre inspired by and mixed with classic doom metal.
Septic Flesh- Annubis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRIzoNyakNM)
Grindcore
Napalm Death-Suffer The Children (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sWbO_iEFJU) (the godfathers of grindcore)
Wecamewithbrokenteeth- **** Romes Roads (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ov9B-Dcg3G8&feature=related)
The Berzerker- Forever (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSLfshjoRNE)
Symphonic Black Metal
Symphonic black metal is a style of black metal that uses symphonic and orchestral elements. This may include the usage of instruments found in symphony orchestras (piano, violin, cello, flute and keyboards), "clean" or operatic vocals, guitars with less distortion, and song structures inspired by symphonies. Symphonic black metal is often confused with melodic black metal and gothic metal, as the styles overlap. This is NOT true black metal in any way.
Cradle of Filth- Her Ghost in the Fog (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltcN_c2ntZA)
Dimmu Borgir- The Serpentine Offering (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAmMcBQavKE)
Raw Black Metal
This is the REAL black metal is about
Xasthur-Beauty Is Only Razor Deep (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX1iAZkSeTA&feature=related)
Burzum-Beholding the daughters of the firmament (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Po5POrC4H7E)
Melodic Black
Melodic black metal is a style of black metal that is less abrasive, more melodic and thus more accessible for mainstream audiences.
Ancient-Night Visit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuaU6OACUE8)
Black ambient
black metal and ambient/dark ambient music. However, emphasis may be placed upon one or the other. The electric guitar and bass guitar are often used in conjunction with electronic instruments such as synthesizers and drum machines, or may simply be played in an ambient, atmospheric style.
Nocturnal Depression - Her Ghost Haunts These Walls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hk3YriYQ2-Q&feature=related)
Blackend Death
style that combines elements of black metal and death metal. There is more usage of down-tuned guitars, palm muting, and complex blast beats. Vocals are often in the form of relatively high-pitched death growls.
Beherit- The Gate of Nanna (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dtbu5XTCPO8)
This list and band samples could go on and on but even at 4 in the morning I got things to do other then sleep. I may or may not add on to this list but from the bands I have up it gives up enough different tastes and sounds to prove that all the branches are needed to seprate the millions of extreme metal bands.
Death Metal is not for me. But hardcore/post hardcore metal is amazing. A Skylit Drive's new album just came out. Anyone gonna pick it up? I already did.
CapitolSkater 06-03-2008, 12:11 PM Here are my favorite bands in the genres:
Nu: Korn
Death: Lamb of God
Heavy: Mudvayne
Blackened death: Behemoth
that was a small sample. My favorite korn songs are:
Blind
Coming Undone
Liar
Twisted Transistor
Freak on a leash
Open up
Souvineer
Hypocrites
Love Song.
Korn rocks. Listen to Coming Undone at 3:02. the way he says Wait is awesome. And, I found out that in some parts of songs, Jonathan Davis doesn't sing at all. Listen to Getting off at 0:42, and on 10 or a 2-way at 2:23. He does the Metal screaming there. Korn is awesome, in my opinion. Especially Coming Undone.
stesmith58 06-03-2008, 12:40 PM Ok im not a big fan or death metal or screamo but im a big fan of the classics like metallica, slayer and megadeth. I think these are the bands that really changed the face of music but thats just my opinion.
Ibanez 06-03-2008, 02:43 PM Here are my favorite bands in the genres:
Death: Lamb of God
Lamb of God isn't death metal, not even close to it.
SkateThrash 06-03-2008, 02:50 PM I was just going to say that.
patosk8 06-03-2008, 03:03 PM Power metal :rocks!:
Angra & Stratovarius
Crapdaan 06-03-2008, 03:09 PM I usually listen to heavy metal or power metal. My favourite bands are Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Gamma Ray, Axxis, Rhapsody of Fire etc. I like a few Angra songs but they also have some very weird crappy songs. Stratovarius plays to fast in my opinion but I'm still bummed about the fact they broke up.
I hate the kind of metal that is all about killing people and stuff. The lyrics are so shallow and pointless and just plain gross. Whats it called? Death metal? Black metal? I'm not sure but I think its nasty.
Heaviest I go bandwise is Bring Me the Horizon, Parkway Drive, and August Burns Red.
NativeSkater 06-03-2008, 05:23 PM Here are some of my favorites-
Slayer
Lamb of God
Behemoth
Cannibal Corpse
Mercyful Fate
Cradle of Filth
Burzum
Mayhem
Vital Remains
Slipknot
Korn
Death By Stereo
Demon Hunter
Children of Bodom
Napalm Death
Darkthrone
At The Gates
Berzerker(Ibanez recommended them)
Goatwhore
Amon Amarth
Sepultura
Cavalera Conspiracy
The Black Dahlia Murder
Forever in Terror
Ministry
Bullet For My Valentine
Venom
That's not it. I'll come back and list some more. I come across a ridiculous amount of bands.
Merging doublepost
I hate the kind of metal that is all about killing people and stuff. The lyrics are so shallow and pointless and just plain gross. Whats it called? Death metal? Black metal? I'm not sure but I think its nasty.
Heaviest I go bandwise is Bring Me the Horizon, Parkway Drive, and August Burns Red.Yeah it's Death Metal. But that's only the oldschool bands that sing about murder and stuff. These days bands sing about it, not describe murders like Cannibal Corpse or Autopsy did. Black Metal bands sing about it too, but not as much as Death Metal bands. If you want to listen to a band that's close to DM and BM, but without those kind of lyrics i'd recommend The Black Dahlia Murder. And the bands you put are good, especially August Burns Red, I like their song Composure.
Tyler Self 06-03-2008, 05:32 PM I could never get into the newer bands that play death metal and stuff. It's all 70s and 80s bands for me. Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, etc.
Some modern bands that I do like is this "7th son" who are from Las Vegas. The song V is pretty cool, among others.
http://www.myspace.com/7thsonband
There is also another band out of Louisville called "MSD" who play a lot of shows there. I saw them a few times in a local underground club.

The lyrics aren't shallow at all they go into great detail like this one from Carcass. Tell me how Maggot Colony is shallow,
"Oozing chyme reeks as your duodenum is hacked
Secreting gastric juices, enzymes melt your faecal tract
Torn major arteries, your corpse with blood is drenched
Your mouth is ripped inside-out as your oesophagus is wrenched
Maggots and grubs bore into the mouldy remains
Masticating lymph, caked blood and cankered decay
Maturating brains play host to the grisly fete
Stuffed anal passage, served on a plate
Purulent torso is a perfect maggots meal
Spilt cerebrospinal fluid is sucked up with zeal
Botulism vitiates the emulsifying bile
Liquidized gall bladder, viscid pus smells vile"
But the lyrics in death metal don't have to be about killing people I mean Deicide doesn't do a lot of songs that are about killing people. But death metal is for the most extreme people its really where all the talent in metal is at (other the drum speed thats where it falls short to grindcore)
(to NativeSkater)
What do you mean black metal bands don't do songs about murder as much as death metal bands do, black metal songs can be about anything a whole songs are about murder/suicide though. Xasthur, Noctornal Depression, Ancient, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Beherit, and a ton of other black metal bands have a few songs about them. I'll post lyrics to my favorite one though.
Kill the human nature inside
Internal force says goodbye
Let your soul die
Using death to silence my thoughts
Cannot live in the human way
Remaining alive to feel regret
Murder the minds voice that doesn't listen
Cause it to hear the bleeding of your brain, the bleeding of your soul
(Killing the other screaming being within)
May the darkest side of time find you in all the wrong moments
The eye (shines like a blade) watches above your sleep
Saw an opening and raped you of the mind
In places darkest at the dawn is where they hide
And darkness travels fast
Let it poison your weak grip on life
Loss of all need
Hate for love
End of life
Will break the chain and cause you to be free.
Well I couldn't find lyrics that are correct to my favorite one. But if you ever heard that song by Xasthur it would ruin your day, really any song by Xasthur will do that to you.
guitarkid7 06-03-2008, 06:05 PM Not sure what you call this but I'm assuming is either metal or rock. I used to know all the bands genres and stuff.
Silverstein
Mayday Parade
Bullet For My Valentine
Hawthorne Heights
Yeah, so what would you call this? Some is kind of punk? Maybe. And the rest rock/metal?
Ibanez 06-03-2008, 06:25 PM Some is like hardcore or screamo I think. Im not into that sorta music so I don't know alot about it all I know is its not any form of extreme metal.

Burzum being a good example, he was influenced by DM so of course he's going to have that theme. But he also goes into fantasy, like for instance, Black Spell of Destruction. Like you can actually destroy something with a spell. DM bands wrote songs about the physical. While BM bands did the same thing but also went into the supernatural. Varg adapted the name Burzum from a word on the ring in Lord of the Rings. It meant darkness. Dead or Per Yngve Ohlin actually thought he was from another world, he thought his veins were frozen. It's fantasy. And to get to my point, think about Chainsaw Guts**** and then think about Freezing Moon. There you go.

Yeah I know black metal along with every branch of music have different themes to their songs. Vargsang has songs about hate and Paganism, Graven has songs about nature, hatred, and pagan rituals, Maniac Butcher has songs abot battles, Burzum has lyrics of Neo-Nazism as well, Blood Rituals have rituals from the satanic bible in it (like Hand of Glory).
For death metal no band has as many different themes then Six Feet Under, they have songs about weed, murder, anti-religon (such as deathlakk and Manpulation), suicide (this suicide), war (amerika the brutal), and pretty much anything you can think of. Grindcore also has punk styled songs that are mostly what Napalm Death write about and Nasum had a few of them as well.
As long as a band follows what the form of music they play they can write songs about whatever they want, a death metal band could have a bunch of songs about love as long as it follows suit of what death metal is and so could black metal (though there have been a few I ran into by Ancient such as Willothewisp, I Madman, and Black Eyes to name them off the top of my head)
But for Dead he didn't think he was from another world he felt that he should have been dead (thus the stage name), he fell into a frozen lake when he was young and felt his blood freeze and then he had a first hand account with the dead lights. He fell into a death like sleep and said he saw colors starting light and then getting darker and darker and he felt "hottness". Later he found out that the darker the colors get the harder it is to come back to life and since that he felt that he was offically dead (but that came from someone with a well known background of serious depression and sickness of the mind. If someone can think a actress is his girlfriend and tries to kill Regan to prove his love for her, anything is possible).

Trust me, there is a need for the main-genres in the metal area. There is a huge difference between a band like Blessthefall and Suicide Silence.
I agree that some sub-genres are rediculous and unneeded, like the melodic-death-grind-metal-with-a-hint-of-jazz kind of **** that doesn't classify anything any differently. (AKA, the kind of genres you'll see coming from OwnagexKing and sometimes even Ibanez)

Hey I resent that! I post needed sub genres! You can clearly hear a difference between bands like Maniac Butcher and Xasthur (both raw black metal) from bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth (both Symphonic black metal). I think we should do away with the ****ty "viking" metal ****.
We only need the sub genres of Death metal, Grindcore, Thrash, Raw black metal, black metal, Symphonic black metal, and melodic death metal. All the others we don't really need. Those are the ones that are real different then the rest of metal.
Six Feet Under, The Berzerker, Ritual Carnage, Xasthur, Dreamlike Horror, and Cradle of Filth, Opera IX, Cadaveria are the main ones that come to mind in each of the needed sub genres I listed. You can hear them all on Myspace and see how they are different then most other bands.
Shorty's_Kid 06-03-2008, 09:01 PM ^It all just sounds like death metal to me. Some if it sounds a little different, but it all falls under the death/black metal category.
I think the genres we need are:
Black metal
Death Metal
Grindcore
Hardcore
Thrash
those are the only ones i can tell major differences in.
But don't worry Ibanez, you know i <3 j00 :icon_bunc
PirateMafioso 06-04-2008, 08:25 AM ^ Hardcore falls under punk. Unless your talking about "Hardcore/Hxc" Which doesnt belong in the metal thread. **** that pussy ****.
Ibanez 06-04-2008, 05:44 PM ^ Hardcore falls under punk. Unless your talking about "Hardcore/Hxc" Which doesnt belong in the metal thread. **** that pussy ****.
I say we kill all the hardcore bands cause all the names with hardcore are extremely stupid, Hardcore, Happy hardcore, Mathcore, etc. Who the hell names these music branches when their all the same anyway, hardcore sounds like a guy screaming at the top of his lungs out of key? No wonder emo kids are so ****ed up, even their favorite bands ***** at them about their life.
Crapdaan 06-16-2008, 01:52 PM And the difference between power metal and death metal? I say huge difference.
Ibanez 06-16-2008, 10:25 PM And the difference between power metal and death metal? I say huge difference.
You are correct, I wish people wouldn't jump to music branches like with Lamb of God, they sound like death metal to people but they don't understand that their more hardcore. I mean Kittie and Slipknot are closer to death metal then them.
NativeSkater 06-16-2008, 10:37 PM You are correct, I wish people wouldn't jump to music branches like with Lamb of God, they sound like death metal to people but they don't understand that their more hardcore. I mean Kittie and Slipknot are closer to death metal then them. You're right Ibanez. People don't listen to and research/study the music enough to understand the difference in the genres. And that's why I think there really shouldn't branches in music, just listen to it. I bet you're shocked i'm agreeing with you instead of arguing lol.

Nope not at all, Im the same way music is music if you like it listen to it if not then don't. I also hate that people break up hip hop is different then rap, its the same thing! When "hip-hop" came out it was called rap.
