View Full Version : Sony Vegas Tutorial
Skateyasha 06-06-2008, 03:25 AM So I know this is a lot to ask, but I haven't had the privelidge of using a good editing software since I was using iMovie HD back in grade 9, four years ago.
So now... I'm a little lost. I just downloaded the trial version of Sony Vegas 8.0 and already I love it. I knew it was way better than WMM but I couldn't imagine it was this much better. I've really been missing out. But I'm a little clueless as to how to do some things with it.
First off, I figured out the pan, zoom, etc... and that's one of my favourite features > WMM (It's really not fair to compare WMM to anything but... whatever) so that's good, I don't think I need much help with that. But I'm having trouble figuring out if you can edit audio levels at precise moments in the clip, you know, fade in and out (but not completely) rather than adjusting the audio level of the entire clip.
Secondly, when I tried to save my movie, it only gave me a 2 second blurb of it. I had split a clip , and that's all I got, not the entire movie. What do I need to do to get the entire movie to save properly? That probably seems like a stupid question :p
Third, trying to figure out slow mo, though I just read that it was hold ctrl and drag the clip, not just drag it... however, is there a way to have it fade into slow-mo? You know, so the clip gets slower and slower (or faster and faster).
Any special tips about sony vegas to help make your videos way better? Cool effects?
Finally, using After Effects with Sony Vegas, I need to edit a clip in after effects by itself, then use the edited clip in vegas right? ah well... That one seems obvious enough. Anyways, if someone could write up a bit of a tutorial on how to make vids in sony vegas I'd really appreciate it.
missing_no 06-06-2008, 05:10 AM 1) you have to zoom in really close to the beginning or end of the audio clip (using just up arrow), the you will see the cursor change to a quarter circle looking icon (instead of the square looking one) as you hover over the edge of the clip. drag this left or right for
the desired fade length
2) as you render you need to make sure the "render only loop region" option is unchecked
3) there is no ramped slow mo in vegas but you can split the clip up into little clips, zoom way in, and ctrl+left click* the edge of the corresponding clips more towards the middle and less as it goes out (for a ramped effect because the more you drag the slower the playback rate)
*if you don't hold down ctrl it just recovers deleted parts of the clip, or if you haven't deleted any of it, it will loop it back for the length you drag it
as for "cool effects"
you find that you have to create a lot of video layers, and experiment with the many video effects to make things eye candy status
At first glance the vid FX selection seem simple, and unimpressive, but once you start combining them and using them with media generators/layers you will realize just how impressive and powerful Vegas can be.
guitarkid7 06-06-2008, 05:16 AM Missing_No just covered it, pretty much.
But you might be rendering wrong. You need to hold your click and drag across all the clips you want to save. Make sure when you drag, everything gets highlighted. Look at the audio clips, and if there is a few, make sure they are all highlighting. Once its all highlighted, File>Render As.
xXSkater14Xx 06-06-2008, 08:19 AM This might be the same as movie studio idk.
But when you select render as, make sure that tannish bar covers the full amount of the movie...

If it's not the drag it and stretch it as far as you need it.

Don't think you quite understood my question.
Is it possible to, in the middle of an audio clip, adjust the audio levels without fading them out entirely, and without adjusting the audio levels of the entire clip? So in other words, take a song, and make some parts of it louder than others during it's time being played, without simply splitting the audio clip and completely fading it out, or simply having the audio suddenly jump to a lower volume.

Not sure if you can but split that clip out and put it in a different track, then lower that tracks volume. Thats what I've done before.

That should work...
Madison 06-06-2008, 11:05 AM I have a tip: Sleep! lol, jk.
Maybe there are some tutorials on YouTube?...Yes, I'm brainwashed by YouTube. :icon_wink

you don't have to move it to another track like they were saying
just split the part up where you want it to change volume (using s), and then lower the opacity level
if that's sounds confusing all you have to do is move you cursor to the top of the split audio clip, and you'll see a pointer hand then just move it down....it will lower the volume of the audio clip
p.s. and a big tip for slo mo
After you slow or speed up a clip
1. right click on the video clip and choose the "disable re-sample" circle
this will prevent if from blurring frames together and just use the source video only
2. right click the audio clip and check the "lock to stretch" box
this will give your ramped slo mo (and regular slo mo) clips that great slowing down sound
xXSkater14Xx 06-06-2008, 11:42 AM How many more points do you need to get a sun missing_no? and to make audio lower you just have to change the opacity?

heh it's funny cause I didn't even know I had one til right now....
GOLDEN SUNNNN!!!
ahhh such a good game
oh and yes the "opacity" what I mean by that is the bar that moves up and down on the clip; that is the technical term i believe :p
with video it changes the opacity
and
for audio it changes the volume of the clip
