so today i skated for the first time in about a week. i rolled around and did a kickflip but as soon as i landed pain shot through my knees. they hurt so bad that i could hardly walk into my house. they feel a bit better, but i'm worried because i've had a problem with one of my knees before. could it just be a side affect of sleeping for a week, or should i see a doctor

Leave it for a while, just rest them, that usually helps with any muscular or joint problem.

it depends...
1) ice it... its a joint, so no heat! ice, ice, ice!
was the sharp pain on the inner side of your knee?
if so,
a) it could be lack of bad posture
b) lack of exercise, and strained the mucsles around your joint.
c*) * may have stared to hyper extend it - not good at all..
rest and ice... and when it starts to feel better, stretch it, but not where it hurts!

Since you're 14 i'll tell you what my doctor told me. stretch like mad. atleast 20 times a day. the reason could be that your bones are growing too fast for your muscles, tendons etc.
I've had some knee problems too. It could just be lack of excercise or too much excercise (thats what mine was).

Your 14, it's probably osgood schlatters. It has something to do with your bones growing faster than your tendons can keep up with. Stretching, massaging, and icing i think have all been said, but they are the best things to do for knee problems. I've had OS for 3 years now =/
