I'm intersted in getting a ps3 but the new 40 gb one in australia isnt backwards compatible and the features arent as great. So is it a good idea to get a used one?

Depends on how good the condition of it is. I would say go for it honestly, especially if you still have a lot of ps2 thats that you want to play.

Ive been playing Resident Evil Director's Cut (1996) and Parasite Eve (1998) a lot on my PS3 and you can create internal memory cards on the XMB so you can save your game saves or if you buy a card you can take external memory card data and transfer them on the PS3.

Sony will be re-releasing the 60 gb in August for $499. They still have a lot in stock, so it will keep customers buying for months to come.
