I have a '87 santa cruz jeff grosso but I stopped using it a few months ago, coz the nose has splitted to the front truck (its still good to go to the shop & stuff, but not really for skating)

I ride a blank Santa Cruz deck, Independent trucks and Cockroach wheels.
This set up is almost twenty years old.
It's really great for bowls!

I have a Sims Eric Nash with Indy (stage 6 or 7s) and 59mm 97a rat bones (NOS). I also have a Bruce Logan with Bennett 5.0s and 66mm EW superballs. I've mostly been trying to learn how to slide (downhill) on it lately, but the Sims board is a bada$$ in bowls and its what I skate for street now too.

I think you can pop some tricks with old school boards, but not with longboards, they're used for cruising

Longboards are solely meant for freeriding and speed. I just started riding my old one, and let me tell you its great fun if your a speed junkie with some big hills.. Just make sure to keep the nuts tight i had a wheel fly off going about 30 mph..Not fun

No dudes... check out Jesse Parker and Brad Edwards. Street and park skating on 40" x 10" boards. I've also seen dudes kickflip and shuv on cruiser-specific longboards. It really depends on what kind of longboard you have.

People have been riding longboards in skateparks for years.

I think it was Tom Sims who had tons of badass shots of him ripping huge pools on his longboard. Crazy stuff.

As for riding oldschool decks, my deck has an oldschool shape, but it's not old. I do make it a point to ride pretty much all of the decks in my collection at one time or another though. Just to see how they ride, but I don't shred on them, just some light cruising on the driveway. And my OG Dogtown Jim Muir with OG Indys and Cubic Bones is one of the best riders ever.

I'm still kicking myself for riding my Santa Cruz Hosoi deck. When I bought it at a thrift store years ago I didn't know it was worth anything, and that sucker was almost NOS at the time. My stupid ten year old self put some scratches on the deck and wore the tail down a bit though...it's a damn good shape though! Now it's on the wall and I cry as I walk by.

I am just getting into skateboarding at the age of 23, call me crazy. I know. :icon_redf

I have always been a fascinated with skateboarding, but I never had the guts to try it. I figure now is as good time as any to get into it, plus I just got health insurance too :icon_wink

I just ordered a reissue of the Powell Peralta "Ripper" 10 inch deck and some tracker trucks with some ratbone wheels. I love the old 80's style of skateboard and it is really the only style of skateboarding that looks interesting to me.

I have been watching a lot of old skateboarding videos lately, such as the first "The Bones Brigade Video Show". I really love that style of skateboarding. :)

This is the first real skateboard that I have ever owned. I just hope I can pickup this hobby without killing myself. :icon_smil

Thanks!

It feels good to be called a youngster. When I first thought about getting into skateboarding at my age I thought I was crazy even to think about it. However, I discovered that a lot, if not most, skateboarders are in their 20's and 30's nowadays.

I just hope I can get into this sport and stay into it without destroying myself in the process.

Sounds like your little girl could probably out skateboard me at this point. ;-)

practice a lot & don't let falling get in your way, just get up & keep going even if it hurts.
thats the best way imo, if you go home every time you fall, you might just as well stay home :icon_wink

Wow, I have been stretching and jogging this week to prepare for skateboarding and just realized how out of shape I am.

It has been several months since I have actually gone out and exercised. Man, my muscles are killing me today. Hopefully I will be all loosened up by the end of the week. My parts and board will probably most all be in by the end of this week or the beginning of the next.

Should be fun to try to start skateboarding. Maybe a little freaky at first, but hopefully I will eventually get comfortable with it.

btw, you prolly want to get risers too if you really want to skate oldskool (it also prevents wheelbite)

Yep this is the old school section. As for destroying yourself, you'll get used to it. It's not so bad after a time. You'll probably just end up bailing hard, getting up and continue riding. I don't know about anyone else, but I got this really wierd thing that I've got more hair under my knees that anywhere else on my legs. It helps with kneesliding when I don't have my pads :icon_bigg

Yea, I did order 1/2" risers also with 1 1/2" bolts. :icon_wink

Hopefully I won't tear myself up too much. I'm not planning on going out and trying any huge tricks or anything. I will probably just cruise around and try to learn some basic tricks like the Ollie first.

BTW, I also even ordered color matching rails, tail guard, and a nose guard to further the old school styling. :icon_wink

Don't worry about hurting yourself, Gamester....you're a baby compared to when I became a grom......age 58. I'm almost 63 now and still in one piece. Ya....there's pain involved, but take it in baby steps and spend a lot of time watching other people bang up thier bodies...and learn from them. Torn ligaments heal and separated shoulders do too....they just take a little longer...LOL!! I put in between 8 and 16 hours of skateboarding a week.

Oh....and if you are going to do the tricks that the new school guys do, you need another skateboard in your quiver.....something 8 inches wide or less and 31 inches long. A Black label deck should be good for that. Don't do new school tricks with a half inch riser...you'll feel like you're dancing on stilts. Use an eighth inch riser for new school action. You may find that the half inch riser is too high even for the deck on order. I use a quarter inch if I can get away with it, because I get more control that way. Just watch out for wheel bite.

When your setup comes to you be sure to tighten up the kingpins, because the trucks come from the factory real, real loose. You may also find that the bushings in the trucks are too soft. Change to Bones Hardcore mediums (the yellow ones). They will be perfect for old school action.

I found a balance board really helpful to get into shape when I was first starting out....and used the following snowboard strengthening and flexibility exercises:

Have fun!!......skateboarding is the best sport and the best brotherhood around.

Hello glidenhi,

Wow, thanks for the info and encouragement! :icon_smil

I guess I'll find out if I need a smaller riser after getting started? How much space should there be between the board and the wheels when you put your weight to one side of the board? The wheels I got are 60mm.

Yea, I don't plan on doing many complicated tricks. However, I think a lot of pretty crazy tricks can be done on these big boards. Take a look at this old 80's video if you got about 20 minutes to burn...

O, ok, I guess I can't post links until I have 15 or more posts :icon_frow

Anyways, if you go to Google videos and type in "old school skateboarding" it is the 3rd video down on the list.

Most those guys look like they have 10" boards and are doing things that I probably would never try. Like ollieing over a picnic table, that is quite amazing.

Yea, this week I have jogged 15 minutes every other night, stretching before and after, to try to get in better shape and despite the muscle pain I am already feeling stronger. I hope I can shed a few more pounds before I get too involved in skateboarding. I have done quite a bit of weight loosing in the last year. I currently am 5' and 11" tall and weigh 180lbs. Last year at this time I weighed 250lbs. My weight goal is 165lb, which is about where I should be for my height.

Thanks again for the motivational words of wisdom :icon_wink

Gamester, I have 60's on most of my setups and the quarter inch risers work fine and don't get wheelbite. Just experiment and see if the wheel will rub. Don't have your trucks too loose, but loose enough to make turns without a problem. If the wheel doesn't rub, it doesn't matter how close it comes to the deck.

You are exactly the same weight and height as me. I was 225 until I got my weight down for skateboarding. I got down to 165 like they recommended and felt like crap. What you are now if probably right. Use a european ball to do situps. You can go all the way back and it is way easy on the back. It will rip your abs. Do front and side situps. Your back will get real strong and you won't have any back pain. I used to have back pain....no more. If you are experiencing any pain in your feet, start spending all of your time at home barefooted and walk and hike barefooted. Your feet will return to a normal and healthy state.....for the first time since you were a kid running barefooted. If your feet can't take the hiking, try these:

Cool, thanks for the helpful info again glidenhi!

I'll have to start doing sit ups too. Just curious, why did you feel like crap at 165? Did you feel too weak because you couldn't eat enough to feel good or something?

07-24-2008, 06:51 PM
Ya.....I looked gaunt in the face and was too weak to feel good. You're young, so you may do better than I did in my mid fifties.....so give it a try but let your own body make the final decision....not the doctors. They think they know it all but they change what they believe every few years anyway. I go to a sports medicine doctor. Got tired of the other doctors telling me I was being irresponsible to skate at my age. I took a heart stress test the other day. It normally takes people two days to complete the test. After 45 minutes on the tread mill they told me to go home and not come back. They said I have the heart of a 40 year old.

Yea, I think I will try to get to 165, however it is getting harder to loose weight the lighter I get. I seem kind of stuck at 180 right now, but maybe the exercising will help.

That is a cool video too, but this is the one that I wanted to show you...
