View Full Version : Freestyle Trivia
Tyler Self 06-20-2008, 12:08 PM First off...some questions i've had for awhile..
How do you pronounce Terry Synnott's last name?
How do you pronounce Gunter's last name? (I realize it has the two dots above the u).
How does one prevent shoe damage on walk the dogs?
Where in the world is Jesse Whalen? He appears to have disappeared off the Earth.
And lastly, if you can name everyone in this picture then you are a genius:
http://www.smallschool.biz/news/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/dirtbag2_group.jpg
Got any miscellaneous questions you want to ask here? Ask away.

1) its pronounced Sin-nit
2)gunthers last name is pronounced Maw-Ku-lee's
3) to prevent shoe damage you can do one of two things or both
-Cut the grip tape in the middle of the board into either a circle or
square
-put duct tape on the bottom of your shoe where you find dog walks
affect it the most (my idea)
4) no clue who Jesse Whalen is
5)Sean Burke,Connor Burke and I think Sarge but thats all I know (I think but I know for sure thats Sean Burke in there)
Necromortis 06-20-2008, 12:48 PM Jesse is in New Jersey. I saw him in November (I think it was Nov.) when I went to New York last. He's still around, skating a lot, but I think he's riding a street board because he's out of freestyle boards. I'm not sure what his situation is on college (whether or not he's going I mean).
To prevent shoe damage on walk the dogs, I used to cut out a circle in my grip. I actually decided I didn't like doing that, so now I take scrap grip and sand down the grip in the center of the deck, as well as the ends so I don't die from fingerflips. I don't sand it down all the way, just enough so walk the dogs don't rip my shoe a new *******.
I see Bob Loftin in the middle in the blue, Sean Burke on the far left (I think?). Is that you second on the left Tyler? I don't recognize the guy next to Bob. Is that Sarge on the far right?
As for Terry - I've heard Jesse say it like 'sin-it' or 'sin-ot,' depending on accent and the like. That's what I've been going of off, especially cause Jesse met the guy.
Gunter I think is 'Maw-ku-lees.' That's how people addressed/announced him at the Worlds. Of course, I could be COMPLETELY wrong.

thats a great idea Christian I think I'll give it a try cuz right now im in need of new shoes because of this haha
bbengyak 06-20-2008, 01:48 PM All the other questions seem to be answered, as for the picture, from left to right:
Sean Burke, Tyler Self, Jeremy Elder, I think next is Taylor Florey, and then Sarge on the end.
dodge 06-20-2008, 01:53 PM Connor burke in that picture... that made me laugh
erm the rest ahs been explained to you already I think, I always said terrys name how it was spelt like sye - not but I probs wrong about that one.
I love jesse videos he needs a new one now we know he is alive.
and for the picture erm well sean burke thats easy. erm you??? bob loftin....no idea who that guy is and sarge so yes Im going with christian's awnser on the pic pretty much.
arling777 06-20-2008, 01:57 PM Is there are reason I think Tommy Harward should have been in this picture? Isn't this all North Carolina guys?
dodge 06-20-2008, 02:00 PM Yeah think so but he is definatlly not in there... Im confused about who the second from the left is???
freestyledog1 06-20-2008, 02:01 PM sean burke, self himself, J.?, idk, sarge
hmmmmmm
6. what happened to meta?
7. do you guys find pogo bolts useless for most trucks? they are never high enough on the truck for me to stand on.
8. T or F, per welinder did stunt work in the film "Back to the Future"
bbengyak 06-20-2008, 02:22 PM Meta just kind of died, no one would buy the singles, Tony kind of just stopped going on the computer I heard.
Never tried pogo bolts
True Welinder did do stunt work in back to the future.
Here's some I can think of right on the spot:
Who first landed triple fingerflips?
What was Mullen's first board?
And what makes Joe Flemke so good? (Personally I think it's those red pants, I think they're magical :icon_weir)
Who thinks they can answer them all? Go ahead try!
Tyler Self 06-20-2008, 02:30 PM sean burke, self himself, J.?, idk, sarge
Oh..uh *ahem* why thank you sir. :)
Taylor Florey? Connor Burke?
Taylor: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=244713188
Connor: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=30844317&MyToken=ef35f2ea-600d-455a-93f0-64ad3c72c744
I would have just posted pictures, but for some reason this computer doesn't save them as a picture file...As you can see, Taylor is extremely young compared to the other guy, and Connor...
Do I REALLY look like Connor? I mean...the hair is totally polar ends of each other.
Who ever can correctly get all the people in the picture gets rep..haha.
johnny16tx 06-20-2008, 02:38 PM Connor burke in that picture... that made me laugh
.
connor isnt in that picture
sean is
Tyler Self 06-20-2008, 03:07 PM connor isnt in that picture
sean is
I beleive he was meaning to say that that good-looking guy second from the left was Connor. It isn't.
bbengyak 06-20-2008, 03:11 PM ^Who is it on the second from the right?!!???!!!???!!
FlatlandBran 06-20-2008, 03:13 PM In the picture, its:
Sean Burke, Tyler Self, Jeremy Elder, some local Wake forest kid that rides all of Seans boards and John Sargent.
All I know.
Tyler Self 06-20-2008, 03:16 PM Alright, i'll just stop. The guy you all can't seem to guess, his name is Josh. I have no idea what his last name is.
I knew that it was a small chance anyone would guess his name, so I thought, "let's frustrate them all shall we?"

he looks just like my friend josh :)
i was gunna say taylor
or cheat and send the photo to sean and ask
but im not a cheattttta:icon_hug:
dodge 06-20-2008, 03:21 PM No i was laughing as that what someone said before me they thought connor was in the picture I just worded it funny.
jmaiurro 06-20-2008, 10:54 PM Tony kind of just stopped going on the computer I heard.
I haven't talked to Tony in quite some time, but last time I did he told me he only goes on the computer when he's doing something involving music.
Zak Kimball 06-21-2008, 12:52 AM Here's some I can think of right on the spot:
Who first landed triple fingerflips?
What was Mullen's first board?
And what makes Joe Flemke so good? (Personally I think it's those red pants, I think they're magical :icon_weir)
Who thinks they can answer them all? Go ahead try!
I think I can answer most of these...
1. i'll take a wild guess, steve rocco
2. a bonzai 6.5" plastic double, forgot the color
3. Personally, its the hair+the fact that his pro model is so badass
Question: what was mullens rank in his first pro/am comp? and who placed above him?
Tim-A 06-21-2008, 01:57 AM I think I can answer most of these...
1. i'll take a wild guess, steve rocco

3. Personally, its the hair+the fact that his pro model is so badass
Question: what was mullens rank in his first pro/am comp? and who placed above him?
i think it was purple
and mullen placed 3rd and steve rocco beat him

Who first landed triple fingerflips?
What was Mullen's first board?
And what makes Joe Flemke so good? (Personally I think it's those red pants, I think they're magical :icon_weir)
Who thinks they can answer them all? Go ahead try!
1. I'll go with Zak's wild guess of Rocco.
2. Purple double kick bonsai board (wasn't it metal not plastic?)
3. Wii fit
My question: If Rocco had retorted to canabilism and eaten Mullen in the year 1983, who would be president of the world right now?
bbengyak 06-21-2008, 09:38 AM You guys have the answers to 2 and 3 but not 1! And Neo the board was metal. And Tim, yes Mullen placed third in his first pro/am contest but Rocco wasn't competing in it, can't remember who beat him, I think Tim Scroggs might have been one.
Minihub 06-21-2008, 01:19 PM Triple fingerflips... You'd think it'd be fairly early skaters. What about Welinder?
Necromortis 06-21-2008, 01:36 PM I think it was Welinder...
~Christian
bbengyak 06-21-2008, 02:44 PM ^Hmm, I've heard Lynn Cooper, probably shouldn't have put that question in now that I'm doubting myself.
Neo IZK 06-21-2008, 07:01 PM ^Hmm, I've heard Lynn Cooper, probably shouldn't have put that question in now that I'm doubting myself.
Ya, I don't think it was Cooper, but I could be wrong. Welinder sounds like a much better answer though.
bbengyak 06-21-2008, 07:39 PM ^Not really, if you've seen footage of Lynn you'll see he has a pretty good mastery of fingerflips and has some nasty triple fingerflip variations like triple fingerflip crossfoot landing and airwalk triple fingerflip.
I thought I read it somewhere that Cooper invented them but I can't remember where. Oh well, anyone else have some trivia they think they can stump others with? It's pretty fun seeing if you know them.
arling777 06-21-2008, 09:23 PM What was rodney mullen's last signature freestyle deck?
freestyledog1 06-21-2008, 09:25 PM the big dog/winny the poo deck? double kick, no concave
where are uptrucks made?
^kinda easy
arling777 06-21-2008, 09:29 PM uptrucks...argentina?
freestyledog1 06-21-2008, 09:30 PM uptrucks...argentina?
nope :)
arling777 06-21-2008, 09:31 PM brazil
freestyledog1 06-21-2008, 09:34 PM brazil
YES! congrats! you have just won a pair of uptruck freestyle trucks!
just send $84.95 to blablabla
oh how i miss those trucks :icon_snif
Tyler Self 06-23-2008, 10:05 AM I have skated with Bob Asthon, his boy (Grayson), and Tim Morris a few times. Bob had names for these two tricks and I had never heard the names before.
One is something he calls a 'machete' which Gokey does a lot. It's the footwork trick where you put your front foot on the nose and sling the board behind you, landing in tailstop. A little hard to explain, but that's the best I can come up with.
Another one is something he calls a Thai Hop. It is basically a trick where you are riding in one direction, turn around (sometimes scraping the tail on the way around), and then quickly do a 360 shove it. When talking to myself during skating, I call it this because it helps distinguish the trick from a normal 360 shove it. Bob's son can do these with a lot of style.
Are these two names valid? Any comments on this?
bbengyak 06-23-2008, 10:58 AM ^I've never heard of anything besides 'machete' for that trick and I'm not entirely sure what you're describing in Thai Hop. Is it kind of like this at 1:24 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHfUddy2mrw but without the body varial. Doesn't really matter anyways though wouldn't be able to tell you if it is valid or not.
Anyone know who this guy, Jacob Hunt, is? http://youtube.com/watch?v=xdi8nETL_yY
He has some pretty crazy tricks and a Chess Board! No idea who is though and if anyone else has heard of him.
arling777 06-23-2008, 11:06 AM I do what Tyler described as a 'machete' every three seconds when I'm doing footwork.
skaterbob 06-23-2008, 12:33 PM i think the true question is why is there so much man skin in this thread?
freestyledog1 06-23-2008, 12:42 PM ^

oooo a chessboard!
i saw his quick rail to 5050, fan video a few weeks ago but it's cool to see a full part from him. seems like a bit of a mullen clone
aronsamma 06-23-2008, 01:38 PM I'm pretty sure it's actually a Ty hop.
Tyler Self 06-23-2008, 02:08 PM ^^You may be right. When I heard the word, I automatically thought of Thai, like the Chinese word.
Brian, i will check out that video tonight. The computer I have now is crap when it comes to videos.
MGokey 06-23-2008, 02:32 PM One is something he calls a 'machete' which Gokey does a lot. It's the footwork trick...

"You know what, MACHETE!"
Originally that clip was just a stupid joke I made for myself, but now I think Im going to use that song for a vid. Every time it says "machete", you'll see a machete hehehe
FightFlyCrow 06-23-2008, 02:35 PM Who won best trick at the US Championship last year?
Tyler Self 06-23-2008, 02:37 PM ^^Kyle Keifer, with his railhandstand to pogo.
Matt, i'm all for it. Something new from you. :)
MGokey 06-23-2008, 02:45 PM here's a good one,
who holds the record for the higest "high jump"?
+rep for correct answer
FightFlyCrow 06-23-2008, 02:48 PM Tyler, you got it half right.
I do the machette all the time, Yoyo has a really sweet line of a few of them in one of his videos.
Warning this will open up Windows Media Player

Zak Kimball 06-23-2008, 04:15 PM here's a good one,
who holds the record for the higest "high jump"?
+rep for correct answer
I believe that it would be trevor baxtor 5' 5.7"
freestyledog1 06-23-2008, 07:19 PM i thought howell had the record for high jump...idk that sounds wrong to me now that i think about it
and isn't that WMV trick called "the b*tch" or something? i thought i saw something a while ago on the F! talking about those
maybe i'm 0 for 2 on freestyle trivia
arling777 06-23-2008, 07:26 PM What were the dimensions of the Tim Morris lust for blood deck that sold out from decomposed
several months ago?
+rep for anyone that actually knows them. I actually need to know this but I figured I'd disguise it as a trivia question.

7.25X27.5"
t-6-ish"
n-5.5-ish"
wb-11.5"
does that all match up? ahaha
arling777 06-23-2008, 07:46 PM haha, did you try to measure an old one that you had? I already tried, it's too beat up. are you sure about the wheelbase? I thought it was 12"?
freestyledog1 06-23-2008, 07:56 PM maybe more like 11.75 but no bigger than that. i'm sure the tail is 7". the nose is pissing me off though. it should be about 5.5"
i remember some of it but i had to double check the WB and nose.
yup i think it's 11.75 for the wb. and 5.5 for the nose. we must have lost that .25" to rounding on the truck's base plates. does that make any sense at all?
arling777 06-23-2008, 08:14 PM That makes perfect sense, except the typo saying the tail is 7".
Merging doublepost
The only thing I'm unsure of is the tail, is it 6" or 5 3/4"? I don't know where to measure from one mine but again it's beaten up.
bbengyak 06-23-2008, 08:38 PM ^I'd email Witter about it if you really need to know though didn't you just order something similar to the Morris from SS, saw it on the blog. Really don't like the Harward I guess.
Merging doublepost
I think I'll post a few more questions, anyone think they know them all and don't worry these ones I'm sure of the answers:
1. What is the origin of the trick name the 'impossible'?
2. At what park did Mullen's first pro contest take place?
3. Who invented coco wheelies?
+rep to whoever answers them all first!
freestyledog1 06-23-2008, 08:39 PM That makes perfect sense, except the typo saying the tail is 7".

it's 6" for sure. i have a newer model over here that belongs to a friend. the tail is just under 6.
idk what i was thinking saying 7"

1. People thought that flipping the board all the way around the foot was impossible.
2. Oasis Skatepark.
3. Pierre Andre.
bbengyak 06-23-2008, 09:25 PM ^Woot :icon_woow , this man knows his stuff. Anyone else think they've got something good?
freestyledog1 06-23-2008, 09:29 PM who's the lord of the sidecut skateboard?

Zak Kimball 06-23-2008, 09:31 PM who's the lord of the sidecut skateboard?
and who's the one who had them on the "crow bar"
If im not mistaken...
Hazze lindrgen and Bob Staton
Right?
freestyledog1 06-23-2008, 09:32 PM ohhhhhhh 3/4ths right
Zak Kimball 06-23-2008, 09:33 PM bugger! i dont know
bbengyak 06-23-2008, 09:33 PM Easy, Bob Loftin is the lord, Hazze Lindrgen had the crowbar.
Tyler Self 06-23-2008, 09:36 PM I don't know the answer, but has a double impossible ever been done? Not a 720 impossible, an actual dubly wrapped two impossibles.
Zak Kimball 06-23-2008, 09:42 PM while we are on the subject of wrap tricks...
has a 360 broken fingers or carousel ever been done? with full wrap?
aronsamma 06-23-2008, 09:42 PM no. Darran has said that he's done nollie backfoot double impossibles, but I'll believe it when I see it, quite frankly.
lazerflip 06-23-2008, 09:43 PM Nope, there have been 720 ones, but no real double impossibles.
rep for anyone who can tell who did the first nh 50-50 fan flip (hint: it's not flemke).
Zak Kimball 06-23-2008, 09:44 PM ^ rodney mullen
he does them in a practice vid
he was the first to do nh truck transfers too
lazerflip 06-23-2008, 09:52 PM haha I totally blanked on mullen there for a minute.
ok, who did one in Rubbish Heap then (hint: not Mullen)?
bbengyak 06-23-2008, 10:01 PM Matt Wood?
freestyledog1 06-23-2008, 10:08 PM Matt Wood?
my second fav part in the video :icon_bigg
arling777 06-23-2008, 10:18 PM I like this thread. It'd be better if we couldn't google the answers, though.
freestyledog1 06-23-2008, 10:27 PM who won, roders or daewon?
google that!
sorry if it isn't really a FS question
bbengyak 06-24-2008, 10:12 AM ^I wasn't aware that they chose a winner. Oh, and Jay, I could proudly say I haven't been googling any answers.
freestyledog1 06-24-2008, 12:30 PM they never chose a real winner. but come on, is it really that hard? hahaha
bbengyak 06-24-2008, 12:49 PM ^Nope, not really.
Callum Bowran 06-24-2008, 03:52 PM has a 360 broken fingers or carousel ever been done? with full wrap?
a 360 broken fingers wouldn't work, and no, a full wrap carousel hasn't been done. Many have tried, and many have failed...
arling777 06-24-2008, 06:06 PM a 360 broken fingers wouldn't work
...because it starts in tailstop, a 360 broken fingers would just be whipping the board upward around your front foot in an impossible motion and landing in tail stop, If you didn't realize this.
Zak Kimball 06-24-2008, 08:17 PM I did realize that, but I meant one that goes about 400 degrees and lands in reg 50-50...
I doubt its been done, but Itd be cool
FightFlyCrow 06-24-2008, 08:21 PM How would you switch it to where your other foot is over the truck?
bbengyak 06-24-2008, 09:32 PM ^I'd guess in theory you'd try to do a full nose hook impossible and try to scoop it a bit more to get to 400 degrees and land in nh pogo thus kind of killing the name 'broken fingers' so in theory you wouldn't hook under the top truck but the nose instead. Doubt anyone would ever be able to do it though.
lazerflip 06-24-2008, 10:36 PM what trick does Hazze Lindgren do in the TV commercial he starred in?
freestyledog1 06-24-2008, 10:38 PM what trick does Hazze Lindgren do in the TV commercial he starred in?
varial classic flip
lazerflip 06-24-2008, 10:45 PM what was the name of john sargent's first skateshop sponsor?
Tyler Self 06-24-2008, 10:51 PM Chesapeake Surf and Skate.

But I bow to his gangsterness regardless. <3

okay it is, but shh...

Tyler Self 06-25-2008, 12:18 AM Might want to ask Jeremy yourself.
Can someone explain to me exactly what a 'flange' is? I believe I have done it before, but I want assurance.
bbengyak 06-25-2008, 11:42 AM ^Isn't that the handstand where you hold yourself so that your back is facing up, an example of so here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkSdKzjbbcQ
first trick in the video.
Callum Bowran 06-25-2008, 12:35 PM what was the name of john sargent's first skateshop sponsor?
Wasn't it victim or something like that? I seem to remember back in the day he had a banner on his sig with the outline of a body on it.

They are hard as hell :)

That word has far to many meanings. Its a guitar effect, a kinded bit on cymbals, and a weird frog-like handstand. Someone could get confused...:icon_redf
FightFlyCrow 06-25-2008, 06:09 PM Heres one for you: What is a Flippy Lillis?
Connor Burke 06-25-2008, 06:15 PM Wasn't it victim or something like that? I seem to remember back in the day he had a banner on his sig with the outline of a body on it.
Yeah, callum, it was victim skate shop, back like 4 years ago when they were still in business here in virginia beach.
freestyledog1 06-25-2008, 06:20 PM Heres one for you: What is a Flippy Lillis?

bbengyak 06-27-2008, 09:13 PM ^I'd be amazed if has been done. There has been railwalks done in rail-handstand though.
freestyledog1 06-27-2008, 09:14 PM ^wow!

bbengyak 06-27-2008, 09:38 PM ^I'm guessing you mean the railwalks in rail-handstand, Paul Brunninkhuis did them here at Nass 2006:

Tyler Self 06-28-2008, 09:31 AM has a tv stand hop ever been done?
if so, by who?
I've tried a TV stand pogo. The 'hop' was more along the lines of me pushing my weight up a bit, but I had no idea if I got off the ground or not. I stopped doing them because they felt so dangerous.
And didnt per do wheelies in handstand?
I've done them before too actually, along with tic-tacs. They're so hard to land after the wheelie, but maybe you all will see something come the end of summer.

Ever pull a 180 pivot out of a fakie handstand? I've tried do them before, never got one, there are so damn hard. :icon_mad:
Tyler Self 06-28-2008, 12:10 PM Ever pull a 180 pivot out of a fakie handstand? I've tried do them before, never got one, there are so damn hard.
Haha, after seeing Terry's video, I went out and tried them, and kept trying over a few weeks. I ended up being able to do fakie handstand flips perfectly, but the most pivot I was ever able to get (and land) was like 45 degrees.
TheGambler 06-28-2008, 08:15 PM Here's a funny story from the new guy..
I went out yesterday, had been skating for about 2 hours, pulled off a couple of 360 shove-its (stoked) and then my friend says "Hey Tim, try to handstand on your board." So up I go... hold, hold, hold, start to tip over very slowly and realise i can't move my hands to save myself because there on the kicks and fall like a tree thats just been cut down and smash my left hip and knee flat on the concrete, hard. That was the end of my day skating...
Tyler Self 06-28-2008, 09:26 PM You're supposed to twist your body if you begin tipping over your head. You have to trust yourself I guess.
TheGambler 06-29-2008, 07:06 AM It was a pretty dumb move on my account. It's not like I've ever really done handstands on the ground before (maybe 15 years ago...) let alone on a skateboard. Once I was up there I just had no idea how to get down safely... I guess I should just be happy that I was able to do a handstand, at least maybe there's some hope for the future :)

Hahaha, I did that with a yoyo plant when I first learned them and I was at the skatepark when it happened, aftwards every step I took gave me a pain in my right hip but just kept on skating anyways.

Tyler Self 07-04-2008, 10:50 PM Not to revive a dying thread, but I was wondering, what is something that can draw/write on griptape that you can either find around the house or buy at walmart for less than or equal to about 5 dollars?
johnny16tx 07-04-2008, 10:57 PM white out,paint pens,silver sharpies
FightFlyCrow 07-04-2008, 11:42 PM Spray paint and a stencil (though you cannot really buy a stencil)
Tyler Self 07-04-2008, 11:48 PM Last time I tried spray paint with a stencil, I epic failed.
Dylan, I guess those are practical, but I want something that wouldn't wear off and would show exuberantly lol.
FightFlyCrow 07-05-2008, 12:06 AM White Out pens work very well for smaller stuff. It stays well and is bright. But only one color and cant do big areas.
freestyledog1 07-05-2008, 12:42 AM silver sharpie like dylan said.
Necromortis 07-05-2008, 02:50 AM Paint pens. They're cheap (at least where I'm from), and don't seem to fade.

That's Jeremy Elder -- not me.
