View Full Version : Did I get ripped off?
Enjoi2 06-25-2008, 08:36 AM So I bought this wax off of ccs.com its called monkey wax ,,I found this nice flatground place to wax it had like low ledges, So I was planning on waxing with the whole pack maybe 14 feet. Turns out I waxed 1 bar on 4 feet and it didnt grind no matter what, then I tried 2 bars and then ended up waxing the whole pack on 4 feet of concrete,,so a whole pack on 4 feet and no grinding,, I also noticed that the wax crumbled really easy and didnt look like it would stay on good. So could if of been to hot that day and the wax melted off? or could it just be because the type of ledge/concrete was too rough? I wasted 5 dollars on crapt.
aronsamma 06-25-2008, 08:44 AM ledges need to be broken in before they grind. like, set your board in a 50-50 and grind it back and forth until it smooths out a little bit.
but yeah, you kind of did get ripped off if you consider that you can just buy a cheap candle.
lareaper 06-25-2008, 08:53 AM If I where you, I'd use that wax recipe on this site. You probly have most of the stuff other than the parafin wax already, so I'd do that. I make it for all my friends and they all use it more than that expensive stuff you get at skateshops. I use it all the time too. It goes on really smooth and doesnt crumble if you make it right. Just try makin a couple batches of that and try it out.
hokus pokus 06-25-2008, 10:30 AM to get a new spot to grind, it has to be broken in as stated above...
also, i found that it helps to wax when its hot as hell out and let that wax bake in the curb ledge ect.
but if you locate a wax shop near you, you can pick up a block of wax for dirt cheap.
break it into decent sized pieces and take it anywhere - wax everything.
have fun
.snOWFalls. 06-25-2008, 10:54 AM can can i tell if you were ripped off if you dont say how much it costs
kf831 06-25-2008, 11:08 AM Yea you got ripped. If you want a lot of wax go to a Goodwill store. Me and my friend found a huge candle there and wax is wax so we still use it.
PrimoSlide 06-25-2008, 11:10 AM i buy a bundle of wax at the dollar store, its pretty much the same thing.
imdesigner 06-25-2008, 11:18 AM you got ripped off, i find the best kind of wax is just candles and stuff like that - never go to a shop and spend $15 on wax when you can just steal a candle that will work 10 tmies better.
KrispyKicks 06-25-2008, 11:21 AM Yeah. You got ripped off.
Enjoi2 06-25-2008, 11:36 AM See the thing is I rubbed the ledge with my trucks alot ,, and waxed so much and it wouldnt work. I think its just the crappy wax that I bought,,it crumbles and doesnt stay on. Thanks for the advice yall I will try the wax recipe
cheapBoarder 06-25-2008, 11:43 AM Yeah. You got ripped off.
Yeah, he got wax off ccs...
Hellview 06-25-2008, 11:48 AM you need to go faster then.
IRideGirls47 06-25-2008, 11:50 AM use golf wax it is soooooo gooood
.snOWFalls. 06-25-2008, 11:52 AM I wasted 5 dollars on crapt.

Vrait 06-25-2008, 01:02 PM So I bought this wax off of ccs.com its called monkey wax ,,I found this nice flatground place to wax it had like low ledges, So I was planning on waxing with the whole pack maybe 14 feet. Ledges are rough, not smooth. What did you expect to happen?
iskateniketres 06-25-2008, 01:47 PM solution : buy a big ass candle.
ForumSkater 06-25-2008, 02:07 PM Yep. Just buy a huge candle or find a smoother ledge.
Trebor 06-25-2008, 03:33 PM i use gulf wax its like 2 bucks for 4 slabs and it works really nicely
arejayismyname 06-25-2008, 03:36 PM all wax is a rip off, most candles work way better
Paul J 06-25-2008, 03:40 PM It probably wasn't grinding because the ledge was rough, you need a smooth ledge and wax it up good, you also need a wear it in a bit by grinding it and then re-waxing it and so forth.
phlap 06-25-2008, 04:51 PM you need to go faster then.
Seconded, besides, some ledges just plain don't grind.
slothdog 06-25-2008, 05:32 PM buy wax on ebay. i got like 20 sticks of the shortys wax for $5. cant beat that.
andius 06-25-2008, 05:37 PM i dont think you'd need to use all the wax for 4 feet, sounds like you put too much on, just put some on, try to grind it a bunch, and re wax, you just want a thin coat of wax on the ledge anyways.
Off topic, I love finding a ledge thats already all black and grimey from all the waxings and grinding, you just know its gonna be butter before you hit it.
arto-geoff 06-25-2008, 06:18 PM man any one who buys "skate-wax" is gettin ripped off just get a candle from your house
TemperMode 06-25-2008, 07:39 PM Some ledges just can't be made to grind, if the cement isn't hard enough. You should be able to tell, if you run your finger over it and it feels almost powdery, then it is probably too soft. If it feels more like solid rock, then likely it will grind.
Most cement in Sydney, Australia is the crappy kind. Sucks to find a nice ledge, and not be able to put it good use.
lilro 06-25-2008, 08:21 PM 1. yes you got ripped off. not for the price but for the fact that you bought "skate wax"..thats like buying "car water" lol...
2. maybe you didn't wax the ledge correctly, i see plenty noobs wax ledges waayy wrong.
3. any concrete ledge can be skated, as long as big ass chunks aren't out of it.
4. go faster. you wont grind off of 2 pushes.
5. to break it in, wax it, then run your board across like a 50-50 like 10 times.
then do a few jump-on 50-50s (put the board in axle stall, then run and jump on it.) to see if it grinds. if it does, the put your board in a tail/nose stall and apply pressure and slide it back and forth a few times. do the 50-50 test again. add another layer of wax and do the tailslide technique again.
6. SKATE THAT DAMN LEDGE!
AthleteSK8 06-26-2008, 12:51 AM I don't think wax is worth that much...
What I do is get a candle at the dollar store. Very cheap and it works great!
Wax is wax!
Today was the first time I've ever waxed a ledge actually, I got a orange candle about the size of my fist and used about a quarter of it on 6ft of curb. I was bustin' 50-50's on that thing realy well.
Dollar store candles rock!
AaronBautista 06-26-2008, 03:28 AM buy wax on ebay. i got like 20 sticks of the shortys wax for $5. cant beat that.
you can buy like 2 tons of candles from the dollar store or walmart for that amount of money
Rohanjamtart 06-26-2008, 03:47 AM lol u want to know if you 5 dollar wax was a rip off..?
think about it.
Enjoi2 06-26-2008, 12:04 PM like I said thanks everyone for the advice ,, and a few of yall said some ledges just cant be grinded,, I believe that.. I rubbed that ***** with wax,, and I rubbed my trucks on it. It never worked. But thanks I will just buy the dollar store wax.
