God's name can be whatever one chooses. God has been referred to by multiple names in scripture. I generally call Him God, Lord, or Father.

I wish it was something really cool . . .

Like "Furgus", or "Alfred". Or better yet, something really bogan Aussie, like "Robbo" or "Dave" or "Jimbo".

This is proof that you can't always get what you want.

I wish God was a redneck . . . :(

yeah i think they took his name out the bible because they were scared to say it, proving that the bible has been changed since it original writting.
On another topic, what is the consensus on the best bible translation?

Tyler Self

^^It was taboo back in the day to say God's name, but nonetheless it is still in there. It's not any tangible name, because really, does God need a name? He instead reveals himself as "I am" and he is, God.

Supposing the Bible is changed for that reason is to much conjecture.

moses' name probably means something like "the son of holy" but we still use his name.
God can mean anything, it's not really a name. it's like calling someone king.
they took it out because of the taboo and the priests leave it out nowdays as a tradition, or superstition.
changing with the bible is what i'd call it

Moses name means "drawn out of the water". And God's name using Hebrew spelling is YHWH. In English we get Yaweh from that, though in the Hebrew it's pronounced "yehova" (which is where we get Jehova). But yeah.

06-26-2008, 10:30 AM
yeah but his real name would be different because they wouldnt have the same sound waves in heaven because there is no air, and the angels probably dont have vocal chords since they are spirits

I couldn't resist, it was late and I was suffering sleep madness. Besides, the Idea of God's name being confused with Lucifer was just brilliant. I don't know if the kid was joking or not but it's pretty funny.

i must point this out. okay so ur saying we cant speak once our souls ascend to heaven? okay well if u know ANYTHING about the rapture you would know that it is said that The Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. so if god is in heaven, and he can speak, why wouldn't he allow us to also speak?

What's this yehway thing? I was raised Jewish, and speak hebrew, it's simply pronounced ye-ho-vah instead of je-ho-vah, I would spell it out in hebrew and explain the sounds each symbol makes, but I guess you'd have to trust me on this one.

Also, it's a sin to say his name in Judaism, which is why in the Torah, and any Jewish prayer book, it lists his name as Ah-Do-Nai which means Ruler, and the english translations it says G-d.

Just random info, I don't get what happened to change it where you can say his name out loud now and it's fine in christianity, but I know in Judaism you're not supposed to.

From what I understand, when God told Moses 'his name' on Mt. Sinai, Moses told the pharoah that "I am has sent me." I Am in Hebrew is Yahweh. That means Moses said God's 'name'.

I have never come across any verse in the Bible that said not to say his name. It may have more to do with superstition and less to do with biblical law.

I Am is not really a name at all. It simply what he is. I Am What (or Who) I Am is simply saying I Am God.

^ "Do not take the name of the lord your god in vain" That does not mean don't say "oh my god" It means don't say "The Name". Skateyasha, Adonai more specifically means "our lord" or "the lord". Adonaijah means "our king".

I think you're leaving out the "in vain" part. If 'take' means what we both know it means, then if he didn't want us to 'take' his name, then he wouldn't have included the 'in vain' clause.

The hebrew word used here is 'shav' which is also used in "do not bear false (shav) witness against thy neighbor..."

This means that in vain must mean to take it without meaning. Saying "oh my god" does just that.

God's name is YHWH. Ancient Hebrew didn't have vowels, and people stopped using the name because of superstition, so nobody knows exactly how it used to be pronounced. It's probably most accurately 'Yahweh,' although it's usually transliterated to 'Jehovah' in English.

And yeah, the superstition came from a misunderstanding of the commandment not to take His name in vain. Jews started to believe that writing the name down was dangerous because the paper might get dirty or lost, and they stopped saying it in case they mispronounced it.

The name is derived from the Hebrew word hawah, which means 'become.' It's in the causative, imperfect form, so it translates more like 'causing to become' or 'he causes to become'
