This group of people, around 93 followers led by Marshall Applewhite, committed mass suicide in 1997 in order to, as they believed, allow their souls to be caught up in a spaceship containing Jesus hidden in the back of the Hale-Bopp comet. Applewhite declared to be the reincarnation of Jesus.
The website above is the official website of the now dead Heaven's Gate cult, it still remains the same as it was in 1997, before the suicides.
Let the website speak for itself.

Yeah people will believe and do anything if it comforts their retarded needs.
Free yourself from religion and you will have no worries, nothing to fear, no obligations.
You will be happy and full of joy like me! I am f*cking crazy in person and I can't believe to this day they let me handle guns in the army :D

The website sure as hell has a 1997 web design. Seriously that site is ugly. On a different note, you guys were probably too young but I remember when this happened and it was pretty big news.

i wonder why they paid their hosting so far in advance.
it's also funny that they redefined 'suicide' as 'to turn against the Next Level when it is offered.' Which means, people refusing to kill themselves are the ones committing suicide.
One of those things that just make me think that we are NOT the most intelligent species on Earth. If we're that stupid dolphins must be MUCH smarter.

They believe in UFO's and you believe in a talking snake...
...what's the difference between them and you?

What a warped way of thinking...I'm actually a little dizzy from viewing that website. And to be quite honest, I can't help but think that the need some people have to believe in something supernatural is to blame.
Man, you know, I'd really like books or videos on this stuff...the "lure" of cults and how they work, it just amazes me at what people fall for.

Only if they're free...
OHHH they're free, just give me the name of the video and I'll "buy" it for "all of us"

I read the whole story on Wikipedia. All the believers donated a million dollars to the leader.
