View Full Version : Im trying to teach my lil step bro how to skate...help!
Sk8r07 06-26-2008, 04:08 PM ok he cant focus and he really wants to go skate with me in a few years on go skate day when he gets better. im trying to explain to hime how to do the ollie the way my friends explained to me and to get him to focus i told him if he learns the Ollie, Nollie, and manual...i would give him my complete Satellite board. he is 7 and he is really trying to try hard now but he just cant get the pop right...how do i explain to him how to do it?
This is how i try to explain it to him:
1.Pop Tail
2.Slide front foot up the board
3.Jump
4.level it out
5.Land it
6.roll away
savedskater43 06-26-2008, 04:09 PM be patient man hes frikken 7
jakedaskater 06-26-2008, 04:10 PM you jump before you slide your foot up, or at the same time
7evenUp 06-26-2008, 04:11 PM are you asking for a tricktip on how to teach someone?
iskateniketres 06-26-2008, 04:12 PM phail. hes only 7.you gotta be patient.
sskatess 06-26-2008, 04:16 PM ollies will take a while. Teach him how to ride and push first. Get him comfortable on the board first.
Ollies are more of a jump witha tail tap on the gorund as you are coming up.
RIP_BOB_GNARLY 06-26-2008, 04:55 PM I can't even teach my 7 year old nephew how to role while standing up.
Chart 06-26-2008, 05:07 PM He's 7, so patience is in order.
I'm 26, but I just did my first ollies a week back. If I have a tip, it's to start with just jumping and popping the tail. Just so he gets a feel of the board rising. Then try to do the front foot stuff.
fallenNJzero 06-26-2008, 05:10 PM dude hes 7 you cant expect much. just encourage him, he might suck at it, but still hes only 7, any encouragment he receives will make him elated. i doubt hes going to be able to nollie at 7, so just encourage him, so that when he is older and has better attention and physical ability, he'll be able to nail it
and try having him do it on carpet if youre serious about it
ISkateZero 06-26-2008, 05:23 PM Just like kinda guide his feet as your tellinghim.
ForumSkater 06-26-2008, 05:28 PM Be patient, I explained it to my 5 year old brother that way and after a month he could ollie. Now, he's still 5 and he can ollie about 5 inches.
Sk8r07 06-26-2008, 05:47 PM guys i am patient but its like he cant focus he just says..."he says let me do my own thing let me try a shove-it first!" i was like ok ok bro do it..and he did a FS Shove-it!!!!.and there is like alot of broken glass all ova the yard and he was jumping off the porch to get used to landing. and he cut is hand open and he was like "aww its just blood it will heal" and he has the Margera/Vallely Attitude which i think is a good thing...so he is learning really fast but i told him it took me like 3 weeks to land a high ollie. i told him it will come soon and if he sticks with it he may become one of the best skaters.
oh and he has VERY good balance
when he starts doing very well i will post a few vids of both me and him skating 2gether
Merging doublepost
oh and he dont believe me that 3 year old kids can skate so im gonna show him some vids later on

Labrie 06-26-2008, 05:49 PM Wow.. He's a 7 year old.
I'm currently learning Ollies as well (and I'm really ripping apart my shoes quickly) Cheers!
'Good luck!' and 'be patient!'
EDIT: Sounds good! Cheered my up too, thanks!

Duboshey 06-26-2008, 06:06 PM yes patience is the key it took me awhile to get ollie.
fluke 06-26-2008, 06:40 PM This makes me motivated to go work on stuff. :) Kudos for teaching your little brother stuff! I skate with my little brother too (he's 13 in July).
sk858619 06-26-2008, 06:48 PM ah i tought my 10 year old cousin how to ollie.
you really gotta be patient lol.
but make sure while your teaching him you show him what your telling him to do so understands you more clearer.
DJ Hankey 06-26-2008, 06:57 PM Yeh i wish i had a little brother so i could teach him how to skate, not for the sponser but so he can have fun by doing a sport with me. I heard that the younger that you are then the its a small chance that he or she would quite skateboarding.
cha-BANG 06-26-2008, 07:03 PM yeah bro, keep goin on teachin' him, the younger kids actually learn faster ;) he'll get it soon
Sk8r07 06-26-2008, 08:17 PM yea here is what he said when i wanted to use his board for a minute "you your own board coconut head!" lol...he has the mike vallely attitude...and is name is Mike!
imdesigner 06-26-2008, 08:24 PM he is 7, so you will need lots of patience. get him to ride around first before you teach him an actual trick
Berishman 06-26-2008, 08:28 PM Don't bother teaching him to ollie yet.
After he's comfortable on the board, you can teach that.
But please, he did NOT land a FS Shove it.
I doubt YOU can land a FS shove it. Not trying to be an ass, but still.
Just get him to learn to drop in.
You say he's a trooper, well, teach him to drop in, ride ramps and such.
Most of the little kids around here can kickturn in a 12' halfpipe, but can't ollie.
misled user 06-26-2008, 08:47 PM "you your own board coconut head!" lol..
Haha, sounds like he's greatful of your teachings
Yer, he's 7 just let him do his own thing, give him a few tips on the way, if you push him he's going to start feeling like it's not enjoyment anymore, more like its a job or something and over exaggerate your celebration/congratulations when he finally gets something down, younger kids love their attention. One last thing, try to point out to him that all the ollie steps should be in one smooth motion so it flows (should probably use less technical language though as he is 7 years old).
Good luck!
Sk8r07 06-26-2008, 09:41 PM lol yea..berishman....his mom doesnt want him to learn to ride yet cause she is afraid he will get hurt
ndib0804 06-26-2008, 09:44 PM i find it weird how u say his mom and not say our mom but ok...
Hayooy92 06-26-2008, 09:56 PM it takes time be patient he's 7 let him enjoy and it will come with time
just let him keep practicing
good luck :)
Trebor 06-26-2008, 10:07 PM let him learn to ride around before having him focus on the ollie
it's going to take alot of patience to teach him to skate
iskateniketres 06-26-2008, 10:35 PM isnt your brother austin08..?
Adam Walker 06-26-2008, 10:53 PM I coach for a living. In all my years there are 2 main hurdles that challenge all young kids, and they are also the biggest milestones to feel like you are actually getting better on a board: ollying and dropping in!
If I am teaching really young kids who are having trouble getting a nice crisp pop...what I normally do is get them to stand off the board, on the ground, and just use their backfoot on the board to flick their board up and catch it. You can make a bit of game with it and see how high they can do it. If it's a game, and they have fun, most kids will just keep on trying it over and over. But what they are actually learning is the quick, flicky backfoot motion needed to start getting ollies.
If that doesn't work, try getting him some 'Soft Trucks'. Stacks of people will say they are crap, but they are excellent for people learning ollies (and flips too!). I have had kids learn ollies in 10 mins using these!
But definately encourage him to roll around as much as possible, try different banks or driveways - and make sure he isn't puching mongo!!!
As far as the focus thing goes....I work really closely with lots of kids that have ADHD and other problems. Short of medication and stringent intervention programs, the one thing that really produces focus in young kids is the motivation to keep trying! If they are not having fun, they will not be motivated to focus. If you bug them too much and tell them what to do, they wont have fun. So don't forget that you can do crazy, novel things on skateboards too - like jump ramp to grass to rolling down the hill - even if it's just to bring the fun back into it!
Good luck!
xXSkater14Xx 06-26-2008, 11:00 PM get him balanced in both regular AND goofy so switch is ALOT easier for him. then after he learns an ollie one way. Make him learn it the next. Make him learn each trick switch when he's first starting off, so he can have atleast the basics down in switch.
skaterbob 06-27-2008, 04:29 AM dont teach him how to ollie , put that kid on a mini , no ollies required, builds balance, and yeah , dont we all wish we can do some more miniskating.
oh, and teach him some stupid tricks, so he has something to be psyched on

Austin08 06-27-2008, 09:26 AM isnt your brother austin08..?yeah im Sk8r07's brother, but Sk8r07 is teaching our step brother how to skate
Planb2276 06-27-2008, 09:39 AM Its GREAT that you are teaching him when he is so young. Try to teach him how to drop in once he gets the ollie or mayb something less hard like rolling in, but anyways, its because younger kids arent as afraid of stuff. When I was 8 i could drop in (because i didnt account for the danger) so it only took me a few tries since I didnt think about the pain. SO right now u could prolly teach him most basic ramp and also street tricks. Sorry for not saying a thing about teaching him how to ollie. So ill help u now, here is the link, show it to him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqBbDYRhJDo
hokus pokus 06-27-2008, 11:13 AM basically just get him to get comfortable on the board... dont rush him into tricks, he will get there... you wanna make sure he's having fun... dont make it into a job - he will grow to hate it!

you should definately not be giving ollie tips if that is your highest ollie.
Also, your sig is a lie, you don't have ollies "nailed"
zeroordie13452 06-28-2008, 02:42 PM welll i learned to ollie in a day, and i just practiced nonstop for like 2 hours.
zerosk8ter 06-28-2008, 03:07 PM show him how u do it and if he cant get it them sit him behind a computor and make him watch tricktips
Sk8r07 06-28-2008, 03:52 PM Get the kid a scooter

{rf)
no i will not give him a scooter scooters are only cool if u can also ride a skateboard (Which austin08 can NOT do)
Shorty's_Kid 06-28-2008, 03:59 PM Does anyone else find it weird that my 3 year old cousin taught himself how to ollie?
Well, first off, you can't tell him to do it in steps. Because it's all one motion. Your tail pops because you jump off your back foot, and you have to pick your front foot up/slide it up as your jumping. It's all one fluid motion, maybe that's your problem.
RIP_BOB_GNARLY 06-28-2008, 04:06 PM The song you wrote is so flippin lame. I haven't rode a scooter in forever, and I bet I would pwn anyone on this forum.
