Sheckler's Arm Breaks
"Skateboard.com learned today that Professional Skateboarder and Reality TV Star, Ryan Sheckler, has broken his arm just 4 days before the richest contest skateboarding has ever seen. Sheckler was favored by many for the $100,000 first place prize.

According to our source, "multiple breaks to the arm have caused a bone chip to be a primary source of the continuous dislocations. The recent break has caused ligament damage and will surely force a reason for surgery, or at the very least, a plan for surgery in the near future. He has refused a cast and will compete in the Maloof Money Cup and upcoming DEW Tour in Cleveland, Ohio."

Ryan experienced a similar injury last year while skating the AST Vans Invitational. Greg Lutzka ended Ryan’s four in-a-row winning streak when Ryan broke his other elbow during the contest and ended up taking second place. And just like last year, Ryan won’t let his injury stop him from skating the upcoming Maloof Money Cup."

"After more than two-and-a-half years behind bars, skate legend Jay Adams was released this morning, July 7, from the Federal Correctional Institution in Sheridan, Oregon. Bussed to Portland and flown to LAX, Jay will be living at a halfway home in Southern California. He’s also been offered a job as facilities manager at Hurley headquarters in Costa Mesa. For the time being, Jay says he’s going to stay put in Southern California. Probably a wise choice, since the frontier of Hawaii’s North Shore can make things tough for people who often find themselves surrounded by their personal demons.

In November 2005, Jay was arrested by federal agents at his North Shore home for his middleman role in a heavy-duty meth deal between California and Hawaii. For the back story, click here. Jay, who was on probation at the time, was facing a possible life sentence, but he turned his life around, got married, and was trying to do the right thing. Jay had to hand over yet another one of his 'Nine Lives' cards, and the judge gave him a light sentence, considering the circumstances.

According to his friends and family, if Jay blows it one more time, he’s going back to prison for the rest of his life. This much he eluded to in a letter I got from him a few months ago. He also reminded me of the first time we met in-person (when I flew to Hawaii in 2003 to interview him) and how that version of Jay Adams (the one who wouldn’t sit down for the interview until I cracked a beer and agreed to join him in consuming a batch of prescription painkillers) needed to vanish forever. If drug-addict Jay needs to go away so that today’s Jay can live on the outside with his family and friends, I can raise a cup to that. But his legacy as one of skateboarding’s most gifted natural talents (and all the good and bad that comes with the ride) will never be erased. Cheers to that, as well."

I agree!! That does suck for him...its not even about the money, just the recovery process for a broken arm sucks (I know, went thru it). I hope he doesn't loose any confidence because of it!

Ok, so the kid (sheckler) brakes his arm, REFUSES a cast, and is STILL going to compete in the competition with a BROKEN arm and people still have the nerve to talk about how he cried a few times, (who hasn't?) and still act like he is a "pussy" and what not. Thats just ****ing stupid. I bet if anyone in here broke there arm they would be crying their eyes out. He gained respect for me because to be able to do that takes some serious balls. If he knocks his elbow around again he might have physical disabilities in it with having hurt it so many times. He gains your respect for being a retard and denying a cast to go skate a contest. Thats stupid to have an arm that will most likely need surgery and not protect it to go skate, you can skate in a cast...

But, even if Sheckler dosen't win, I'm sure that to him winning 100,000 dollars is like one of us finding a dollar on the street. With his reality show and all that skating he has done already, he's pretty set. He was set for life when he was 13 and had a skatepark in his backyard. Crazy kid, he's even skated Bob Burnquist's (sp?) mega ramp. I respect him as a skater, but not really as a person.

Who the hell are you to tell me to shut up? I'm not trying to be different by not joining the club of sheck haters because I have never been in that club. I thought he was and still do think he is a great skater from the first time I saw him. And honestly, no I don't listen to a lot of "mainstream" music. Why? Because I don't like most of that music as in genra(sp). If a good "mainstream" band played the music I liked, then hell yea I would like them it would be stupid for me not to. I don't go along with the little clubs of hate and stuff.

And was there stupidity in his part for entering the contest with a broken arm? Yes, but it still takes balls to do it. Balls that you don't have to do something like that.
