View Full Version : Some Noob Questions. Please Help!
Dumplins 07-30-2008, 02:22 PM Ok so i've been planning on getting a board for a while now and i've done my share of research. i've never skated before so i dont know much. i finally bought one last night and i have some questions.
EDIT: i was going to post a picture of the board, but i cant post URL's until i have 15 posts. i bought the Girl Rick Howard Fully Flared board off of CCS.
if someone can post a picture of it, i'd greatly appreciate it.
i got this board. 7.75" Girl
Independent Stage 9 Low trucks
Spitfire Wheels 52mm
Destructo Hardware
Jessup Griptape
first question..which is the front of the board and which is the tail? i was assuming the tail of the board is where the "Rick Howard" is.
second...how do you break? would it be better to just lift the board and let the tail slide or should i be doing powerslides. i didnt want to get "razortail" so soon, and i wasnt sure how powerslides effect the skateboard (ie. the wheels/trucks would mess up)
third...was my setup for my skateboard good for street and good or my body? i'm 5'9" 150lbs. size 10.5 foot.
i may have some more questions..but these are all i can think of for now. thanks in advanced everyone
fallenNJzero 07-30-2008, 03:02 PM i believe you mean this
http://shop.ccs.com/content/browse/jsp/item-large-image.jsp?itemKey=205045&color=MULT
im guessint rick howard is the tail, because of the way it reads.
the board is a good fit, and it should be fine, but you dont even really have to worry about how good it is for street, because youre just beginning and wont be doing many tricks and you could find an interest in freestyle or vert.
when you say break, do you mean stop? if so, you could just stomp your foot on the ground. jump off to the side and just pick it up (possibly avoding razor). what i do, is ill hang my toe off the side of the tail, and just lean back, so my shoe scrapes instead of the board. but powerslides can give you flat spots in the wheels i believe
guitarkid7 07-30-2008, 03:08 PM I have that same setup besides different hardware and the deck being a Girl Brandon Beibel.
I do what he does^, stop as if I was scraping the tail but I only let my toes that are hanging off touch.
The nose is bigger overall. Its higher when you look at it from the side, and wider. the tail is more smaller, not AS steep and more pointed.
Dumplins 07-30-2008, 03:19 PM yes that's the board, and yes when i say break i mean stop. i was assuming the wheels would get messed up...guess i'll powerslide in emergency situations if i'm going fairly fast. i guess just putting your foot down is the logical answer. thanks for the help guys.

any other beginner tips i should know about? tic tac and whatnot?
i think it's safe to assume i should start with ollies and shove its?
guitarkid7 07-30-2008, 03:22 PM Lol, powerslides are hard for me on pavement. I can do it on a wet concrete floor but not on the road.
Yeah, start with ollies and shoves, then get comfortable with them at a decent speed then start to learn 180s, then you can do it all fakie, whatever you want with it.
Dumplins 08-04-2008, 06:45 PM k well my skateboard came in today and i rode around for a little.
Question: i have a hard time keeping the board straight or at least keeping it going in the direction i want it to go while i'm kicking/pushing. am i not putting enough weight on the front foot? what angle should my front foot be while i'm pushing?
i know these questions could be answered from me riding around more and is probably different for every person..but i was only riding around for about 7 minutes. got a busy day/night on my hands. any tips are welcome.
guitarkid7 08-04-2008, 06:54 PM The bushings in your trucks need to be broken in. Don't have the trucks too tight for the first week of skating or longer. When you push, usually all of your weight is on the front foot, so you can move your ankle to the side a little.
Keep riding around like that, and you will get the hang of pushing and turning and stuff. Good luck!
Dumplins 08-06-2008, 06:53 PM day 2 of skating went pretty well. thanks for all the help guys.
i'm getting used to it and riding my skateboard is getting easier.
landed my first stationary ollie too =)
jack7h3r1pp3r 08-06-2008, 07:07 PM sick thats the first trick to success :)
spyboy1o1(DL) 08-10-2008, 09:28 PM congrats man, your 75% of my skill and ive had my board for 9 months...
Dumplins 08-11-2008, 12:19 AM thanks again everyone.
any tips on moving ollies...i fell trying to attempt one the other day. board slipped out from under me.
i dont believe there's a guide or anything on here about moving ollies yet.
i've been reading that i need to jump "up and forward" but i dont really know what that means. i find it hard to jump forward while on a skateboard wihtout the board flying backwards.
the board gets a little shaky when crouch down too during my moving ollies. i'm assuming it's either cause of my trucks..or cause i'm crouching too low and losing balance.
any tips on the moving ollie?
jack7h3r1pp3r 08-11-2008, 12:24 AM just try to look at moving ollies as if you were standing still and try to ride around a bit more so you can get a bit more balance for when you are trying to do ollies and just practice a lot and all the time and they will be easy in no time :)
spyboy1o1(DL) 08-11-2008, 03:23 PM i found it easier if i just rushed the ollie, rather than trying to get all crouched real nice and lined up.
Ampx612 08-11-2008, 03:53 PM umm, i never really jump forward, and as for slipping out, you just need to keep your body weight centered, don't get scared and lean back because that's a sure fire way to slip back, just jump up as if you were going to when you are still, and the momentum you already had will carry you forward, ollie after 2 days is good, try to learn tricks moving now so you dont have to relearn them every time you try them moving.
joe1206 08-14-2008, 06:50 PM Thats a nice set-up,
I was wondering which was my tail a few days ago,
basically i have a girl og tubbs koston deck and the " nose " top of the girls head was really big and long and my " tail " was aot smaller
ForumSkater 08-16-2008, 02:39 AM Well first off, yes Rick Howard is the tail, and you can always tell because the tail is SLIGHTLY smaller. The setup you chose seems fine, and you should be perfect skating it. Just some tips, try to keep your board away from water, mud, and sand. Grass is ok, I guess, but just try to keep it on the ground like it should be. For stopping (and this is crucial) do NOT stop by 1. Dragging your tail, and 2. Dragging your foot, because you'll get razortail, and your sole will get ripped off, and I trust you don't enjoy bleeding feet unless you have some kind of weirdass fetish... Anyway, that's pretty much it, and if you need any more help, don't hesitate to ask.
P.S. I forgot to tell you, to stop, I'd recommend popping the board up into your hand. It's pretty easy, all you have to do is hang your heel off the front of the board, put pressure on the front foot, and just slide your foot off, and the release of pressure should pop the board up and you just catch the nose.
