View Full Version : Dave Hill effect.
ShredTheGnar 08-21-2008, 08:38 PM This is done via harsh lighting and a little bit of tweaking in post processing, I think I finally have it down.

hanyo66 08-23-2008, 12:55 AM dave hill effect is totally played out already and lame as hell
lemons7 08-23-2008, 01:20 AM Hahaha, it makes it so unreal. And I'm not sure it's in a good way. I do like the way the sky turned into a purpley-blue color. I have seen some dave hill shots I like though.
Like the attached image. I <3 light blue, and it had mad light blue.
Hellview 08-23-2008, 01:51 AM ^ok that looks pretty overdone,
I never knew what this was called and I don't care if it's played out too much :P still fun to mess around with
I tried doing it on some old pictures I'll post them once Im done with the 2nd

LOL ok, mine came out pretty dull but that's probably because none had a flash or a lot of shiny stuff in them. and they were slightly underexposed.. anyway found this old picture and this one came out the best, the next one the eyes just looked to sharp to be real

ForumSkater 08-23-2008, 02:12 AM Excuse me for being photo-tarded, but what's a Dave Hill effect?
Hellview 08-23-2008, 02:14 AM I googled it too and found this
http://www.diyphotography.net/creating-that-dave-hill-look
but heres dave hills website
www.davehillphoto.com just go through his portfolio and you'll see why
ShredTheGnar 08-23-2008, 02:25 AM The high pass filters are way stupid and create too much halo-ing compared to the method I use.

Cool, I think it's really creative and wanted to test a method out and see what I could come up with. Pull the stick out of your ass. Thanks.
Hellview 08-23-2008, 02:48 AM if it matters for anything I think it could do without the vig.
ShredTheGnar 08-23-2008, 03:31 AM Haha I know, and I usually hate fake vig, I don't even know why I threw it in there. Whatever, this photo was shot over a month ago and I just wanted to try the Dave Hill technique on it. meh!!!

Hunter7 08-23-2008, 05:42 PM how bout posting a tutorial!
i like the effect and well, wanna learn how to do it
Hellview 08-23-2008, 06:02 PM just google it, I posted one already theres a lot of different ways of doing it
Hunter7 08-23-2008, 06:21 PM ^ was planning to do that anyways, i just really like what he has done.
fallenNJzero 08-23-2008, 06:33 PM some of those look cool to me, but you gotta know when to use the effect. nice though i wana learn how to that
ShredTheGnar 08-23-2008, 06:53 PM The ones that use the high pass filters don't come out well. What you need to do is get the gritty look through actual coloring and contrast adjustments, and then go back and do skin smoothing, a lot like this tutorial:

it works on CS2, you need a RAW camera file (.NEF for Nikon, .CR2 for Canon) and the Adobe Camera Raw plugin.
