Just got this new (used) 50mm f/1.8 II lens today, got it for $80 shipped with a UV filter... WOW is all I have to say. Having f/1.8 is amazing, when the best you can get on the rest of your lenses is f/3.5 but at a super-wide angle. Yeah, the AF is loud on it, and it's all plastic, but damn this thing is worth every penny.

The rest of these were shot on the 50mm but at Sunny 16 (f/16) for sharpness.

question, i'm getting a dslr for christmas this year, and my mum has set a budget of around $1500 for the camera and the lenses and whatnot. ive decided on a 30d body and im currently looking around the interweb to find a decent walk-around lens thats pretty cheap, is this lens any good for a walk-around general purpose lens? or would i be better off spending more and going for something like a sigma 17-70?
im mainly interested in it because its so cheap, leaving more money for a fisheye or a couple of flashes.

hohoho! 1500$ you might as well get a 40D, the price on 40D is gonna drop a bunch when the 50D comes out (pretty soon)

or you can get a D200.. maybe even D300. your gonna get a great camera either way

but if you take a high school photo class chances are you'll need a 35mm camera and a 50mm f/1.8. they're pretty much the standard lens, it's just an extremely handy lens. and the canon and nikon versions are super cheap and their image quality is great. they're both around 100$

Not really, the one shot with the visible sensor dust was shot at f/16. You see a lot of icky things at f/16 and up... And the camera isn't mine anymore, I sold it last week. My 1D comes tomorrow.

To answer the question dude's question, try to find a used 30D or 40D and just get a 50mm f/1.8. Shoot with that and see if you really like it and want to continue, and then get more gear. Always test the waters before committing to some expensive gear right off the bat.

yeah i was originally going to get a 40d, but went down to the 30d you can get second hand 30d's for like $300-400 on ebay, so that leaves alot more money for lenses and ****, and your only really getting that extra frame per second and live view with the 40d...although, i would much prefer the 40d.
anyway, thanks for the advice, i think ill go with just the 50mm and get a zoom lens later on.
any ideas of when the 50d's coming out? pre-christmas? lets hope so!
