Recently, the Oregonian (a Portland, Oregon newspaper) sat down with Ryan Sheckler during the finals of the "Dew Tour" stop in Portland. Ryan talks about his family, celebrity status, cars, haters and more. Not too long of an interview, but its more then last year, when he sped off in a minivan after placing second.

Taken from the Oregonianlive.com (http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/sports/12194619084520.xml&coll=7&thispage=1)
After placing second at the AST Dew Tour's stop in Portland last year, skateboarding prodigy Ryan Sheckler refused to talk to media, ran from tour staff and sped away in a minivan. His autograph session, scheduled for later that evening, was cancelled.

We didn't let the 18-year-old action sports pinup star get away without talking this time. He spared us seven minutes of his time before the tour's skateboard park finals Friday at the Rose Quarter. He later won the event, pulling him into second place in the season-long Dew Cup standings behind Paul Rodriguez.

Sitting in a side room deep in the bowels of the Rose Garden, Sheckler appeared agitated. He wore all black, with monster diamond earrings pinned in each lobe, and sported two new tattoos on his forearms, "Skate Life" on one, "Till Death" on the other.

A family dispute was troubling him, he said. His divorced parents and two younger brothers, Shane, 16, and Kane, 9, had traveled with him to Portland. He didn't get into details. But it was clear, from what Sheckler shared, that life as a celebrity can sometimes be taxing.

Sheckler became an instant star when, at 13, he turned pro and won his first X Games gold medal. Since then, he has quickly become the new face of skateboarding, an heir apparent to legend Tony Hawk. The reigning Dew Cup champion three years running, Sheckler snagged his second X Games gold earlier this month and recently wrapped up filming the third season of his MTV reality show, "Life of Ryan."

How are you feeling?

Right now, angry. There's been some family issues. It's kind of crazy, but it's making me skate better.

Does your family always travel with you?

It depends. Sometimes, it's a few of them here. Other times, it's just my mom. But they've been trying to make a conscious-us -- consciencent, ahhhh! Dude, I can't even say the word. Conscience, ahh whatever. They're out here trying to support. But sometimes, it works for the worst.

How do you feel about your place in the Dew Cup standings?

That's also why I'm a little bit frustrated. I've realized this is not the end of the world. It took me a long time to realize that. I still go out every contest and try to win. But at the end of the day, if I don't, I don't beat myself up for it anymore. I've accomplished so much at such a young age. I realize the good's overweighing the bad. Every day, it's a different turn, a different obstacle.

What's it like being a celebrity?

It's weird that I can't go anywhere. Even when I got off the airplane today, it was pictures and autographs. People just want to meet you. People want to see what you're doing. It's a little intrusive every once in a while, but other than that, this is what I signed up for. I never really expected this. All I wanted to do was skate. And skateboarding's brought me here. It's God's plan, and it's working.

Do you consider yourself more of a TV star or skateboarding star?

I consider myself just a professional skateboarder. I hate the word 'famous' or 'celebrity.' Those words trip me out. I'm just a skateboarder. But I have an extraordinary life.

Can you describe how extraordinary it is?

We fly around in private jets. I just finally bought my own house, bought a big old home, got a bunch of cars. It's the life, you know, the life I've always seen celebrities and other people have that I've always wanted. I'm 18, and I have it. And it's just getting bigger.

Where's your new house?

San Clemente, Calif., where I grew up, about two miles from my mom's house. But I bought a big house on the corner overlooking the ocean, so it's cool.

And how many cars do you have?

Right now, I think I have four? Three? Three, and I'm probably going to have five at the end of this year. I'm trying to budget out a Ferrari.

A Ferrari?!

Yeah, I'm 18. I've got to show something. I'm tired of these haters.

Tell me about these haters.

The people that dis me obviously have some kind of interest in what I'm doing. They talk about me almost more than my fans do. So the haters just help me. But, you know, it gets to me, for sure, when I'm out skating, having a good time, and everyone's cheering and there's a few guys yelling in the crowd.

What else do you want to accomplish in life?

I'm just going to keep skating. I want to be the first to get the first five Dew Cups in a row. And then from there, maybe jump into the acting world. I don't know, man. There's nothing really that can stop me. We've got Sheckler merchandise coming out. I'm working on new clothing, working on the new shoe line. There's a lot going on. My life is super busy. But you know, I can't live a normal, regular non-stressful life. It will kill me. Not being stressed out kills me. I like the stress. I like the unknown, the animosity in the air. I like feeling like there's chaos everywhere. It helps me relax. It's crazy. My life's been so hectic since Day One, when I was 13 and I turned pro and won the X Games. Since then, all I've known is chaos. That shows at my house, too. We have super sick parties. It's a great life.

Doubt that would stop anyone. The only thing he can hope for is for the media to realize how sick Nyjah Houston is for his age and give him a show.

This kid doesn't know up from down. He's "just a skateboarder" then goes off into some crap straight out of MTV Cribs. "Chaos helps him relax" while he tries to remember how many cars he owns, "budgets a Ferrari," and contemplates "jumping into the acting world." He's a long way from understanding why people hate him, and that's sad.

He still thinks that people hate him because they think he can't skate good...or for not having a Ferrari.

RYAN SHECKLER IS NOT A SKATEBOARDER. HE IS A GUY WHO KNOWS HOW TO SKATEBOARD.

You all need to calm down, honestly I hated Ryan Sheckler at first because everyone else did, but I realized that he's sick at skateboarding and I was just trying to fit in. I bet that everyone here is just saying **** about him because he has a great life and you're jealous of it. He may have problems but that's for him to deal with, not any of your concerns. You can't just say I like him as a skater but not as a person. If you were in his shoes and had the same problems he has had with his family, etc, then you'd be acting the same way. Just think about it.
-------
Going onto the interview, it was really interesting. I understand him more now and can see what's been going on this last year. I'd be annoyed to if I had the press and all that crap following me when I got off a plan, etc. Because he just wants to skate. Even though all the auto-graphing and stuff would be cool at first, it can really take someones life over. Good find Pathtek4 =]

we all have valid arguments to justify our reasons for loving/hating this kid. i don't like him, but i won't say anything more about how i feel so as not to come off as a billigerant *******.

let's get a few things straight; not all girls are in love with him. quite the contrary, quite a few girls i've talked to have told me they hated his guts. it's amazing how personality can overpower looks, such as in sheckler's case. so basically, he's contradicting himself.

secondly, like a few of you have mentioned, he's clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed, or the brightest crayon in the box. he either can't do basic math, or he's trying to come off as better than everyone else by not being able to count how many cars he has. AND, he seems to be completely oblivious as to why people despise him to no end, when in actuality, it's not because he's a good skater and loaded with money; it's because he's a self-centered, stuck up asswipe. instead of buying another car to a futile attempt to impress people, maybe he could give that money to charity so he can clean up his damaged reputation and do some good for once. i rest my case.

Not that he's living the luxurious life, but that he's so boisterous and arrogant about it.

Case in point:
"I'm buying a ferrari, maybe that'll shut the haters up"

You're right, he deserves a normal, proper life free of haters. After all, he's just a normal skateboarder with so many cars he can't remember how many he has, and plans to buy a ferrari to try and shut people up.

This guy is unbelievable! How can he expect to be the oh-so great child prodigy, turning pro at 13, winning X Games gold medals, own his own place over the water and four cars, and have his own clothing line in the process + his own t.v show without being some kind of celebrity.
What kind of kid needs 4 cars?

Persondude, that was a pretty stupid statement "he's not a skateboarder just someone who knows how to skate". Maybe not everyone who skates has exactly the same personality? Each skater is different, his personality doesn't have to match your criteria for him to be a skater.

He doesn't seem like a very intelligent or understanding person but whatever, if he's not harming anyone then fine.

Completely agree. He had an awesome childhood, that came crashing down, and its toughest on the oldest looking after you little bros, its tough. He used all his problems as motivation while skatn, and because of that hes become how he is today. Putting so much emotion into skating.

Imagine his childhood he didnt skate back then to be famous, or knowing he would be what he is now, he just skated, had more determination, and fearless-ness feeling, when he was havin problems.

Its tough, he probably didnt realize how much the fame would take over his life at the time, being away from bros, guilty feeling...

I dont know thats how I imagine it from his point of view. Its kind of been the same thing with me, though Im not even comparable to Sheckler on a skill level, obviously, but I can relate to why he skates, and uses problems as an advantage while skating.

And now hes more famous than he could have imagined him, and its definitely getting to him, very very stressful to feel like you have to win first place, to accomplish something, and like people would think less of him if he stopped getting better, and practicing, its hard, and the traveling, not a lot of time with his fam or friends.

You can see the toll its taken on him, watch his part in Almost Round 3, he was so chill, compared to nowadays, hes just different.

Ohh man, the sad thing is, he had something going for him in the early millennium. I remember vividly too, the June 2001 issue of Skateboarder, the ad on the second or thrid page had a photo of him pulling a sick melon grab. The next page had an interview with Rodney Mullen.

And I'm sick of everyone saying "you just hate him cause he's had success and he's young11!!!!!!" Shut up. Just shut up. The dumb ******* trying to ward off his haters by buying a Ferrari speaks for itself. Everyone hates him cause he's a spoiled, ignorant little prick. Well its really nerve racking when absolutely every real skateboarder hates you. Everything he says just comes out really wrong... I dont think thats quite what he meant, but more of a way to make himself feel better... having 1 more thing up on all the people hating on him.

I wouldnt say hes spoiled, hes had to work and practice at skateboarding just like the rest of us. Plus hes under a lot more pressure because everyone hates him, so he focuses solely on getting 1st in the contest or whatever.

I wouldn't say we all skateboard for the fun of it, or we need to; but more of the love of it. He would not skate and keep skating if he did not love it. You cannot get that good if you do not love it, if you skate and dont like it, you just never get any better and throw your board around more than skating.

But that is exactly why I hate Sheckler, I mean, he's 18 and he ain't showin nothing. No Lambo. No Ferrari. I mean, seriously, what kind of moron runs around at the age of 18 with no Ferrari in the drive? It's ridiculous. Come on Shecks, get your game together, son!

Yo all the hating on Sheckler is unnecessary. He is an insane skater and that's that. **** what his personality is like, **** what he complains about. That **** does not matter. All that matters is that he produces and that his part in Superfuture is going to be sick.

So the mentality of the skateboarder has no influence on whether you like them or not?

... thats stupid.

so he's tired of of the word 'celebrity' or 'famous' but he has 3 cars, buying a ferrari, has his own house, and yet he still wants to be called a professional skateboarder? an average professional skateboarder would drive around a 98' honda to the local elementary school and hope to get some cool shots. on the other hand, Ryan is budgeting for a ferrari when he's already got 3 other cars and for skating he decides to built his own skatepark knowing that one way or another, his sponsors still value him greatly. and he's still not happy? what a dousche.

his skating is good/decent but Life of Ryan made him come of as stuck up and a whiner or whatever, but i still like him.

He might act stuck up but he probably doesn't know how else to handle everything that's happened to him. I'd say for every fan he meets, he comes across ten people who dislike him just because he's famous. I feel sorry for him. He was only young when he started that show. If anyone's an *******, it's his parents for selling him out so young.

I don't hate him at all, but I still don't understand why anyone would need more than 1 car.

Is there a reason why a professional skateboarder can't spend his money on cars and a house? Is that really what the average pro skateboarder does? Is he supposed to live with his parent's forever and drive their cars? He isn't the only one who has built his own skate park.

Who here wouldn't buy themselves a nice car and house if they had the money?
