If you don't already, you should get down your pop shuvits too before trying a varial. I bet it'll help a lot.

Varials are pretty tough for a new skater. I'm new too, but I'm almost getting them. I need to practice more kickflips first also.

Make sure you got both pop shuvs and kickflips down. Otherwise, dont even try...

ahhhh nooooo!!!!!!!! skating has been corrupted. a varial kickflip is NOT a varial. a varial is a separate trick. its like a hand shove it. you start out in a lien grab and you end up in a mute. there is also a 360 varial where you do a shove it first then a lien then a mute.

This will be my most arrogant post... ever!

Ooooh, through on a technicality there...

Strangely, this post works for the real meaning too...

Bingo! A varial is a grab that is spun 180 degrees with your hand, then released and landed. Usually they go from a backside grab (melon-ish grab) to a mute grab.

If someone under the age of about 16 is talking about a varial, chances are they do still mean a varialflip instead of this more proper meaning though. In fact most grabs names have been screwed over in one way or another. Varials are one of the few grabs in the Tony Hawks Games that they got 100% right!

It doesn't matter so much, but if you ever find yourself in an confusing chat about "varials", this might be why. Information may come in handy someday. Who knows!

Yup, GridgeSauce is totally right. A varial is NOT the same thing as a varial flip. Varial Flips are often called varials cuz it's so much shorter

GridgeSauce is correct but you don't see most people talking about doing a varial (lien 180 grab or whatever) down a set of stairs. most people just refer to varial kickflips as varials. i like to call varial heelflips just varial heels.

^ Yeah, that is true. Whatever most people call it sort of goes.

Its sort of like when people shorten stuff like "I just did an awesome front nose!". Front noseslide? Front noseGRIND? Front NOSESTALL?? Haha, thats a little too much shortening.
You can get away with most of them though, fakie hards, inwards, bigflip etc. I just call shove-its "shoves" now, i didnt even realise I was doing it.

i do that alot too. i have always called inward heelflips just inwards or inward heels. it can get kinda confusing when you get to talking about which direction like you say i did a big flip and it could be bs or fs. usually i think of bs bigflips when i talk about them though.

i learned varials before kick flip

Same here. I had varial kickflips down LONG before I got a kickflip down. And I'm still more consistant with varials than regular kickflips. It's weird.

'Front nose' is generally accepted as short for a frontside noseslide though. I don't think I've ever heard anyone use it to describe something else than a front noseslide, people who do nosegrinds and nosestalls / taps usually don't shorten it.

Same goes for whoever pointed out that big flip and big heel could go both ways, pretty much everyone does their big flips backside and their big heels frontside, so it goes without saying. When you do it the opposite, uncommon way, it's pretty logical that it's going to be the first thing you will mention.

Varial is sortoff a hand shove or something I think,
But they sure mean varial kickflips,
I'm sure they cant do real varials,
They just made "varial kicklipf" shorter.

those shorter trick names fail.

but you sound cooler:

Tony Hawks trick tip vol.2:
They are 360 flips,
but cool people call them tre flips

That was like me until I realised how bad varial kickflips look.

varial just refers to a rotation. thats y there are body vars, kickflip vars, grab vars, etc.

i've never heard anything refered to as a 'front nose' or 'varial' unless its obvious from the context (i.e. we are in front of a rail or a ramp).
