View Full Version : Using slang language and AOL “chat” phrases on the forum.
Dog Town 09-09-2005, 09:24 PM We are having an increasing problem with people posting using chat type words and broken sentences. We are requesting that everyone type using normal words and complete sentences. I have heard excuses that typing full words takes too long but yet the same people will make 10 “I agree” posts.
Typing the word “wht” v/s “what” and “wuz” v/s “was” is simply unacceptable. There is no way in the world that it takes longer to type the words spelled right, heck half of them are the same amount of letters just spelled wrong. There are some sentences that I have to read 2-3 times to even figure out what is being said.
<O:p</O:p
So…we will be warning people who post excessive amount of chat type words. Please give the common courtesy to other and you your best spelling and punctuation.
Daniel Jones 09-09-2005, 10:24 PM THANK YOU!! I appreciate this new rule. I think I have been one of the users who tends to type a little more normally, but this will help out a lot with reading everyone else's posts.
Sticky 09-09-2005, 10:25 PM I'll go on record to say that I agree wholeheartedly. The bastardization of our language on the interweb is growing increasingly tiresome. I think that people come off as less intelligent when typing webese as one may be perceived with use of verbal vernacular as well.
Mr.Getz 09-09-2005, 11:40 PM So no more "lol"? aw, that's the only one I use, but I love it..
sweden 09-10-2005, 12:02 AM I agree that we should stop using them, ill try too keep that in mind, though I would like to be able to use lol lmao and rofl. Otherwise noting else
Customgriptape 09-10-2005, 12:33 AM So no more "lol"? aw, that's the only one I use, but I love it..
I think LOL is acceptable, because it expresses emotion in a way that no other phrase can. I mean saying "that is humorous, and has caused me to laugh" just doesn't do the same for you.
But yes, we as members all need to discuss things to our best degree of intelligence, and typing in broken sentences and extreme slang or AOL speak drives the intelligence, and legitimacy of our forums down. Using good grammar and good typing skills will help you in life, so what better place to practice than a place that you love being anyway? Sorry to sound corny, but I really think it will make the forums a better place.
Dog Town 09-10-2005, 12:55 AM Sure, lol, lamo, things like that are cool and make since, I'm taking about "wht do u tnk i shold ask 4" type stuff.
lumpy 09-10-2005, 01:11 AM Thank you! Being ignorant or acting like an uneducated fool is the lamest "style" to ever come around. That and wearing pants that are so big that they fall off or give you terminal plumbers butt. I don't want to have to decrypt your messages or see your boxers ... or worse.
Thanks for stepping it up, maybe it will catch on.
marker 09-10-2005, 06:55 AM they cause nothing but sore eyes,
but i just use that for texting.
we should really have a spell check system here or something.
but nevermind, with that rule, nobody would try to talk like that or anything.
Uncleleo 09-10-2005, 11:28 AM Yeah, I see kids doing this and it annoys me. It really doesn't take that extra time to type the few characters. I use lol very excessivly (sp?) on here and it would kill to take that away from me. Also, can we use sp? that is another thing to check spelling.
skaterpunk 09-12-2005, 08:21 AM Thank you Dogtown, it is much appreciated! Forum slang just gets really really annoying and its to hard to read.
thanks for making this decision.
SSR
Zero Skater 09-16-2005, 12:16 AM remember when people would write stupid things like "dawg" to try and seem cool. thank god it's not the 90's anymore. he he. thanks dogtown.
Daniel Jones 09-16-2005, 06:41 PM Hey, you know what would be rad? If you could add a feature where you could make your own settings, so you could type "w/" and it'd make it into "with" and so on. MS Word has that, and it'd help the rest of us who type like normal human beings to be able to read others' posts.
baseballstar2 09-16-2005, 06:54 PM Fine by me but keep lol everyone uses it.
ElementSkater13 09-16-2005, 07:26 PM thank you!! i agree 100%
yo dogtoown ...thanks fo addin dis new feetur man! I be get n on evry day now. haha just kidding. seriously though, thanks alot, I hate AOL slang with a passion, it gets on my nerves and I can't read it!...anyways thanks once again for enforcing this new law.

Kr3wBaker 09-18-2005, 02:16 AM I agree with the rule but there are some common things that i would think everyone knows, like "w/" is something my teacher even uses to grade papers. i like the rule because it does get annoying when people do that, but i dont want to feel like im being graded on how i type
junchu 09-21-2005, 06:22 PM wtf? jk er... i mean... I am just joking.
I like had a post in here 3 days ago, and its not here anymore, crazy nazi mods and your constant need to delete my posts...jeez. lol just kidding
superskater23 10-31-2005, 07:20 PM I agree. Some of these people are using abbreviations that I don't even know what they mean. I usually type decent, but thank you for making this rule!
Emerica2828 11-10-2005, 08:44 AM sorry ill stop using them
"element" 11-10-2005, 08:27 PM thanks!!!!!just wondering is it bad to use other languages like "norwegian"swedish and moreP???
Customgriptape 11-10-2005, 08:32 PM Yes. We request that you use English when talking in the forums. Until there becomes a need for a Locals forum (when there are enough Norwegian speaking people to need one) you'll be able to speak in your own language there. Until then, we ask that for the benefit of everyone that you speak English.
TeNsOrSkAtEr 11-25-2005, 02:36 PM O.K. will do next time i post in this forum.
specialedsk8er1 11-27-2005, 01:19 PM Thanck you i cant read some words either on here.

Agizard 11-28-2005, 09:40 PM aright, dis rool ihs awsome!!!1 Lol, im just jokeing. I totally agree with this rule. Excluding the foreign people right? No offense.
Dog Town 11-29-2005, 12:00 AM were skaters... NOT english teachers man
Humm, seems you have 8 post and most have been complaining. Yes, we are skaters, we are also educated people. Skateboarding is no excuse to present yourself as illiterate and uneducated. Also, typing correctly has nothing to do with being an english teacher, it has to do with applying what your english teacher tought you.

ooo dogtown just owned you!...haha just kidding. DogTown has a major point. Since when do all skaters type and generally present themselves as idiots? We're not grammer teachers...we're just not stupid and ignorant.

Not complaining just wondering
asking why theres a christian skaters thread and no other religion of skaters isnt complaining its just exercising the right to question things.
Complaining about the mongo bias i must blame myself but its not my fault most of the mongo flamers are biasted *******s >.>
But besides that i am quite literate im just always in a rush so i make up my own abrieviatons <(spelling) i think
off topic <Can you tell me why theres only christian skaters and NOUTHING else> and <Doesnt that belong in religion and politics>
**Not trying to start another fight**

Dog Town 11-30-2005, 07:58 PM Cool, and to answer your question about the Christian section, I am a Christian, I pay 100% of the bills, and I wanted to start a board where Christians and anyone else who wanted a decent place to chat could meet.
Enjoy the forum, just go easy on the language.
Bretonyskaterxo 11-30-2005, 08:06 PM I agree... its annoying to try and read *R u thre? Ne 1?*
newbie_sk8r 12-02-2005, 01:24 PM I completely agree on those rules, there's know reason why people have to type in abreviations, who knows, maybe it will make some people less lazy. And also, good point Dog Town, you made the forum, you pay for it, you choose what's in it, and if people are offended by that logic, they are welcome to leave. Oh yeah, sk8adude, you have just been officially OWNED by Dog Town, hehe.
-Aaron
eLeMeNtSkAtEr 12-02-2005, 01:46 PM Sorry, but this is just "stupid". LOL and LMAO are acronyms. It's in the english language. If people can't deal with it, thats just pathetic.
Dog Town 12-02-2005, 03:26 PM Acronyms are ok, we all use them, I'm talking about spelling words wrong or not using the letters in a word.
heelflipper12 12-06-2005, 09:27 AM like "lyk" "sk8" "n e 1 thr" "nd" "h3110" "d0wn 70wn" basically that junk! :icon_joy: but i think we should terminate them :icon_pist

For me it takes me longer to type the "AOL" words longer than it does normal, one reason because I have to try and remember all the words.
Ibrokesomething 01-04-2006, 07:54 PM whoops... i've skipped this thread for a while. hope i get another chance because i've been using "lol" alot
feedmegrease 01-09-2006, 05:50 AM Thanks so much, man. There wont be any more of the bull**** chat lingo anymore. Thats a good thing. And people will be able to read other peoples posts with not having to read it over 5 times lol.
Daniel Jones 01-09-2006, 03:23 PM IbrokeSomething, you can still use "LOL." j dnt go overbord n start typin lyk dis.
ZombieXcore 01-12-2006, 07:02 AM Ahh sanity at last. I can't stand or understand all this slang nonsense anyway!

matrixisfun 02-23-2006, 01:22 AM well I hope it doesnt annoy you if I use" hey are u going?"
I am useto saying "U" for you
SkateF0undation 03-06-2006, 08:37 PM yea, thats a good idea, but i sau "jus" a lot instead of "just" only because its a habbit, but ill try to break it, wha about typos??? you shouldnt warn somone if they just make a simple typo...
Dog Town 03-07-2006, 08:03 AM No, we understand there will be typos, but we have had some post that look like they were written in some kind of code or something.
I do however think people should try their best to spell as good as possible.
Daniel Jones 03-07-2006, 11:09 AM ^You mean spell as well as possible. ;) Kinda ironic in this convesation, haha.
Dr_Feelgood 03-07-2006, 05:34 PM ^^ You mean conversation. How ironic hahaha :D
_Jayden_ 03-07-2006, 05:36 PM ^^ Daniel jones spelling conversation wrong was your cue to spell something wrong, lol
Daniel Jones 03-07-2006, 05:47 PM ROFL, you pwn3d me Dr. Feelgood! :D

choker 04-02-2006, 12:42 PM does this mean if you make a mistake you get into trouble.
FaggotLaMaggot 04-02-2006, 12:50 PM No, you won't g3et in trouble. They said they understand typos, but they don't like having to read a special languugage.
Examples:
Okay: Thsi is okay.
Not okay: 7h1s 1s n07 0k4y.
See, typos are okay, but a specail languge is not.
angelo 04-13-2006, 09:55 PM Um,okay.

Skaterboarderer 05-15-2006, 02:04 PM Ill try to keep that in mind. It will be kind of are but for Skaters Cafe i will do anything.
Tyler Self 05-27-2006, 02:39 PM I used to type that way, don't anymore now, and i'm glad.
Super Mario 06-09-2006, 06:11 PM anyway,i only know what LOL and WTF are.
I only use it every now and again because i am disleic and cant think of how to spell the word!

SkullSkate182 06-30-2006, 08:45 PM skullfire lmao=laugh my ass off

OldSchoolKid 09-22-2006, 05:44 PM Thank god for this rule. I just got booted off some other skateboard forum (Skate Bulletin Board) for voicing my opinion on slang and typing.
Once again, THANKS FOR THIS RULE! I WILL COMPLY! (I don't say that often)
Super Mario 10-28-2006, 03:05 PM Does that count for the shout box too?
protege71691 10-31-2006, 12:06 AM i agree.....i somtimes misspell or use slang when i type really fast, but its allways on accident.
sorry to everyone if you have read my post and couldnt figure out what i wanted to say
Does that count for the shout box too?
Naw, the shoutbox is way more laid back :)
Casualtie 11-01-2006, 10:49 PM I always try to use good punctuation, spelling, and grammar when I type posts, just because I think it looks better. I'll stick in a few bolds and italics, too.
And I use paragraphs.
A lot.
i duno wht u r tlking abt, its prty ez 2 rd diz
Yeah people need to learn how to type. Correct grammer and punctuation isn't necessary but at least get the words right.
TRBreakz 11-07-2006, 10:19 AM I like this rule because it will make the site more organized. Being a new member I look for forums that are like this and not all messy
kf831 12-05-2006, 05:25 PM I havent been following this one.
ZooCork21 12-05-2006, 05:37 PM i think that the only reason that i and some other people post sentences like that is because we're so used to typing such sentences on AIM.
Sk8te Flip 12-05-2006, 05:56 PM i duno wht u r tlking abt, its prty ez 2 rd diz

isn't grammar spelt with 2 a's
doesn't matter,
anyway i'm also getting annoyed with people saying without by doing w/o it took me ages to figure it out. this simple rule is being broken all the time

I've counted 9 spelling/grammar/punctuation errors..
The main goal is to try your best to try and spell the words..
As long as you get the idea of what a user is saying it's okey..
Not all of us have spell check automatically checked on their computer.. :icon_wink
Reno_Rotary 12-05-2006, 06:48 PM Let the grammar nazi'ing begin.
thatkid 12-13-2006, 04:49 AM fair enough sorry if i do a little bit of it in some of my posts im to use to typing like that
Warcatz 12-13-2006, 05:14 AM For some reason I've always used perfect grammar in my posts and on Msn, I think it's a really good habit to get into for school, work etc. It really does annoy me when I see posts that are poorly set out, some people don't put any thought into it. It'll make everything alot easier if there wasn't all these spelling mistakes in posts. :p
By the way if I've misspelled something, don't quote me on it, please. ;)
honeymustard 03-20-2007, 07:32 PM I try to use good grammar as much as I can. But your seriously going to warn people? I dont think thats neccessary.
FreeLove 04-09-2007, 08:04 PM So no more "lol"? aw, that's the only one I use, but I love it..
Well i think that"s an exception because it wouldn't make much sense typing "laugh out loud!" would it?
Wow. Thank you so much for making this rule. I hate it how people say things like (and this is a qoute) "Yo wzzup dud ther lkke so many ppl at the sktprk tday" that doesn't even make much sense. Well as i like to say, the english language is evolving into a time period where we fit more into a sentence while using less space.

Man, you're going to become an english teacher, arn't you? He didn't mean taking it that far. He just meant getting rid of excessive and unimportant slang.
Man, you're going to become an english teacher, arn't you? He didn't mean taking it that far. He just meant getting rid of excessive and unimportant slang.
Isn't that what I said after I corrected the spelling mistakes in his post?
I'm a Grammar Nazi, this is what I do. If you don't like it you can "geuut ouuet"!
And if I'm not mistaken that post I made was roughly 4 months ago..
Bananengurke 06-25-2007, 04:04 AM i hope you guys dont mind if i us "ur" instead of "you're" cause thats reallly easier to write
rhys7 06-29-2007, 10:58 PM Ok man, I have been a culprit of using slang I will change now
dumbdog7723 06-29-2007, 11:58 PM agreed. i hate ebonics
ooder 06-30-2007, 03:37 AM who really cares? its just a web/chat site

I really care, encase you're wondering..
If the entire site was filled with handicapped speakers every visitor would think it's some kind underfunded online mental institution. Seeing as Ray's intention was to make a "Sociable(And legible)" skateboarding forum, being classified as some kind of half witted, illiterate excuse for a discussion group would greatly harm the amount of visitors and serious members that come to this site. And as long as there isn't anyone around who can read properly the ad space wouldn't be payed for, and the entire forum would collapse into itself..

I'm aware of, "He just meant getting rid of excessive and unimportant slang". Did you not read what I had said after the selection you quoted?
Tristan 06-30-2007, 06:25 PM Remember guys this is the god damn Cafe, we show class. Please, do not turn it into SB-C you 1337 talkers.
Super Mario 06-30-2007, 06:57 PM Okay, for these complaining people. Which is easier to read?
"I went to the store"
"I lik wnt 2 teh stre omg lol"
SkATeRgUrL4LiFe 06-30-2007, 07:39 PM no offense but i dont really see what is really wrong with using slang language. i am trying to stop now but i was just wondering why do we have to stop. ( im not saying this with an atittude just so you know.

sweetkool_93 08-09-2007, 09:34 PM This rule does cut down on people who use slang words; I like to read legible posts.
PlanB FTW 11-28-2007, 04:48 PM Hey, I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, because I also hate the slang...it's annoying. But anyway you used "v/s" instead of "versus". Haha i just like to point that stuff out sometimes. But you know, you made the site so why should i tell you what to do.:icon_wink
Seńor Waffles 11-28-2007, 05:35 PM We are having an increasing problem with people posting using chat type words and broken sentences.
Okay wow I've been typing "incorrectly" like that on the forum for a while so but its not excessive example
hahha man rofl u shld try 2 go pro 1 day...
thats about how far i got with the whole AIM chat so sorry I'll improve
swordman540 11-28-2007, 05:50 PM Um lol is still ok, right?
Globeskater95 12-19-2007, 08:03 PM Great rule I'm really tried of people using chat lingo online, one day something means something and the next day it means something totally different
360 flippin 12-19-2007, 08:34 PM Amen! Haha that was bothering me.
slothdog 12-19-2007, 10:35 PM aye donut thnk that thiz rool iz very gewd... j/k :)
Berishman 12-19-2007, 11:49 PM Yeah, I try not too do it too much, but I can't possibly stop saying "lol"
I don't think "text talk" is always bad though.
It can help to get a point across..
like with "lol" or "jp"
without those words i would probably get tremendous amounts of neg rep because people would think I was serious..when I wasn't
lol
I don't use slang language but whatever, I really don't mind it.
HOWEVER I would mind it in thread titles and first posts, because it'll help people who are searching find more relevant topics.
k? Thx! g2g

S.L. Guitar Man 02-15-2008, 12:25 AM speaking of bastardisation of english...
gaol is not jail
doughnut is not donut
mum is not mom

Fixed. The correct spelling IS "Doughnut", not "donut".
I've never seen anyone type "gaol" for anything, minus when they make a typo for "goal". ATons of people say "mum" instead of "mom" not only on the computer, but in real life also (Mainly in the UK from what i've noticed). Your just going to have to get over that.
TheNoComplyKid 02-19-2008, 11:18 PM its going to be hard, but...uh..i guess i can take it.
S.L. Guitar Man 02-22-2008, 12:39 AM I say mum, so don't hate on it.
no, i said mum is the correct spelling of mum
Merging doublepost
i feel a "ya mum" joke coming on
Flipthetres 02-28-2008, 11:28 AM Well thats good. It might be really hard to understand what people say This rule should help alot :].

Actually, mum is mom.
Americans - Mom
Europeans - Mum
Im from Kellarney living in Texas. I use mum all the time, no one whines or complains about it.
sskatess 02-28-2008, 12:19 PM yeah we have pretty different spelling, such as mum and doughnuts we use rather than donuts. plus the following words the site claims are spelled wrong, but that's how we spell them:
honour
humour
doughnuts
realise
traumatise
etc
Jay Santos 03-24-2008, 12:30 AM I think LOL is acceptable, because it expresses emotion in a way that no other phrase can.
Sorry to sound corny, but I really think it will make the forums a better place.
hehehe lol
eleventytwo 06-13-2008, 05:07 PM I'll go on record to say that I agree wholeheartedly. The bastardization of our language on the interweb is growing increasingly tiresome. I think that people come off as less intelligent when typing webese as one may be perceived with use of verbal vernacular as well.
nice vocabulary O_o
Weissenegger 08-10-2008, 01:48 AM Thank you all, I enjoyed reading!
gogoguy 10-10-2008, 12:14 AM remember when people would write stupid things like "dawg" to try and seem cool. thank god it's not the 90's anymore. he he. thanks dogtown.
But not as bad as trying to sound smart by using words like bastardization and vernacular; that's wack.:icon_bat:
GridgeSauce 10-10-2008, 12:28 AM Fine by me but keep lol everyone uses it.
i dont use it
choker 10-10-2008, 12:10 PM seems like it went out the window as soon as the shoutbox came in
Lukeaxx 10-10-2008, 03:14 PM Thank god, I am sick of people typing
"w00t i h@z lnded k1kfl1p on sk8 2d@"
Although i would appreciate still being able to use abbeviations such as lol, rofl, lmao etc...
Jay Santos 10-10-2008, 03:51 PM lawl why dawg ?
Hmm,I've tried to avoid typing like that,it's worked so far haha.
ricta_rules 10-10-2008, 04:01 PM Thank god, I am sick of people typing
"w00t i h@z lnded k1kfl1p on sk8 2d@"

SkateNCreate 11-29-2008, 01:59 PM I cant stand when kids type like that. Thanks.
Paul J 11-29-2008, 03:06 PM This rule isn't taken seriously anyway. Personally I think people should be able to type the way they want, even if it is annoying. Nobody over uses it anyway on here.
3OH!3 11-29-2008, 07:13 PM Zomg lulz ftw!!!!
iam'sink 11-29-2008, 07:24 PM ok thats good, but i hope no rules for punctuation? i find people really stupid when they type in super slang. ok i still going to keep slang as lmao, rofl, lol, omg, omfg.
Marshalemon 11-29-2008, 11:39 PM lol thx 4 dis thred
