Kelowna RCMP are warning against this activity

KELOWNA (NEWS1130) - A 21-year-old Kelowna man is dead after falling off his skateboard while being pulled by a friend's car. Mounties say he was hanging onto the passenger door when he slipped and was hit by the vehicle. He was taken to hospital with severe upper body and head injuries, but later died.

Now police and his parents say his untimely death is a reminder for others to think twice before doing something so dangerous.

I always seem to read stories about this happening.

i always seem to eat **** when i skitch the back of my friends bike, idk why anyone would find it safe doing it with a car.

I know this kid who skitched on the back of his friends motorcycle, fell and smashed his face, and broke teeth. He got really messed up. Skitching is just a bad idea overall.

The last time I skitched I ended up with a severe concussion and several stitches in the back of my head; it is definitely not a wise choice.

But I don't do it often..haha.

I've skitched on an ATV before. It's not stupid at all. I like it cause you get speed, kind of the same way that some of you like bombing hills. I could say that you guys are stupid because if you fall bombing a hill it's going to hurt a lot. But anyway, that is a pretty sad story.

ive never skitched on anything besides a bike, and i dont plan on skitching cars either, but i got 2 questions.

why is skitching so hard?

and, if youre skitching the back of a car how do you get killed? getting run over by another car im assuming?

Marko

That's scary - I wasn't thinking about the danger element when I skitched on my longboard a few years ago. I held on to the back of the car though and stuck my fingers near the boot opening button. I would never do it holding onto the inside of the car especially with the wheels spinning so closely behind.

I've skitched with Heelies on before..you guys suck at it. I personally feel it is stupid because of the risk involved; it obviously has potentially fatal consequences. I know you could argue anything does but I think we can agree that the chances are much higher when traveling at high speeds.

why is skitching so hard? Speed Wobble (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_wobble).

this type of things kinda just like becomes a shock to all skaters everywhere that what we do is dangerous and although its increidbly uncool to wear helmets and **** we should take ectra precaution doing something like thiss =[

Terrible, i always read stuff about that too. My friends skitched a car a couple of years ago and both ended up in hospital, broken jaws and wrist bones. A lesson was learnt.

Its not uncool to wear a helmet. If you are skating ledges then yes it is pretty uncool but when you are hanging on the side of a car or flying 15 above the ground on a half pipe you have to be pretty stupid not to wear one.

Exactly! It's easier too. Also people with ridiculously loose trucks like me you should never do this, ever.

That's why you don't skitch!

.....while hanging on to the passenger window.
no **** if you fall you're gonna get ran over.
If you hang on to the back bumper and fall, however, you're basically wiping out bombing a hill, minus the hill. big deal? i see none.

wanna skitch? here's how

1. buy any tony hawk games (thps4 or newer versions)
2. load it up, start the game
3. go behind a moving car or truck or whatever
4. press up and down
5. balance
6. to finish the skitch, press the ollie button

MRCK

Skitching is more dangerous than most people think and that's why bad accidents such as this one happen, they usually try it just for kicks, are unprepared and not aware of all the risks it involves, and most of the time when something bad happens, it's because of something they hadn't even anticipated. I've skitched before (from the back of friends cars), and I can tell you that you get a lot of speed in a very short amount of time, which can be surprising at first and make you fall if you're not perfectly familiar with your board and aren't used to skate at HIGH speeds, also since the car is in front of you you can't see the cracks, pebbles or manholes on the road so you never know if you're going to hang up on something (definitely the meanest aspect in my opinion), if it ever has to brake suddenly you're in for some tough trouble too. It's fun sometimes (as long you're perfectly familiar with your skateboard obviously...) but I wouldn't advocate or recommend it either, and you can't do it with anyone, anywhere, and in any situation.

RIP.

Skitching is fvcking dumb.

If you do it, at least hold on to the bumper or something. That way if you eat **** the only possible thing that could hit you would be a car behind you, and I don't know why you would be doing it with cars on the road in the first place

I've skitched before. I think it's fun. Hell, me and some of my friends had a chain skitch going once. (I was holding on to the back, luke held onto my arm, jeffrey held onto lukes arm, etc)

You just have to actually think before you do it. Tell whoever's driving to accelerate slow, DONT do it if you have loose trucks, and know when to let go. The first time I did it we got up to about 30 MPH and I started getting crazy speed wobble, so I let go and stuck it out and ended up fine.

The only person I know in person that's gotten hurt skitching is my friend, because he didn't take into account all the loose rocks on the road he did it on.

I skitch on my friend Trey's moped to the gas station from the skatepark every now and then, it's pretty fun.

But yeah, as long as you think ahead, you'll be a lot safer. Whenever me/my friends do it, we do it going uphill so we can slow down faster, and then we can bomb the hill. Great fun.

heartagram695
07-10-2009, 02:14 AM
^while it is obviously a good idea to think about anything you are doing that could injure you in any way, even if you think ahead you can't be prepared for the unexpected like maybe a stray pebble or getting outrageous speed wobbles and really hurting yourself.

MRCK
07-10-2009, 05:11 AM
It's actually safer to do it with loose trucks than tight trucks, you're less likely to get speed wobbles. Tight trucks are pointless anyway, skateboards are meant to turn, it's not a monorail

I've always ridden my trucks super-tight. I lean into turns really hard though.

to go faster.

but yeah, if your not smart about it it can be a super bad idea, just know your limits and you should be okay when it comes to any aspect of skating.

I've skitched a friends moped, and as long as he and you are smart about it, you should be okay.

know your limits guys, and be safe.

Skitching was usually for when people wanted to trick off of a loading dock and couldn't get enough speed..and that's what it should be used for.
My friends will skitch on my bike, and I will on theirs, but cars can be kinda dangerous sometimes.

I did that laying down on it, and went off a kicker and ate it. Probably a dumb move.
My brother just went down the road, fell off, and he got mad road rash on his side. haha.

I doubt that you did that without breaking anything major. The speed your going in the forward direction means the speed you will hit the ground. College physics ftw!

i can sprint 16 miles an hour.

but i can probably push a bored on good flat ground about 20.

And you missed that he COULD have fell into dirt/grass/sand.

I am still kind of surprised at how many people in this thread are quick to berate the victim for being "stupid" or "foolish." Of course we all do ignorant things from time to time and occasionally they have horrible consequences. I don't feel that we should be belittling the victim; after all he has paid the ultimate price. We should however learn from his mistake without having to mention how "stupid" he was.
