Default Help! What to buy the Nephew.

    Hi all..
This my first post and need a little help.

I figured I would go directly to the source for advise. My Nephew wants a skateboard for Christmas. Being close to 50 years old I'm so far beyond being cool anymore I have no idea what to get him. I want to get him a rig that would be the envy of every kid he knows. I want him to freak out when he sees it. He's 13 years old. Any ides or suggestions would be great.

    Thanks.
    Marc

I dunno, but, sometime my sig has some ideas. Being a small fella, the stereo setup would be the best for his size.

go to a skateshop and buy a namebrand deck alot of people are really into the P2 or impact decks i prolly wouldnt go with an impact for a 13 year old especially if hes a new skater unless hes a bigger guy
if he is wanting a complete(with trucks and everything)for bearings bones reds seem to be the favorite and for wheels most people ride bones or spitfire i think and for trucks i ride ventures only but i dont know what the most popular thing is ive been seeing adds for theeve trucks and they seem really nice but i dont know

    hope it helps

^Do it I want to get some bearings^

Arighty bucko. The only thing used are the trucks, I've got fresh wheels to match the green theme. The blue moose deck is also all new and would be a good beginner setup, but, will probably be a little big for him.

For a starter for him, find a 7.5 deck. Just get him a shop deck as a starter. Independent makes some very good trucks and those will outlast anything on the skateboard. Ricta and spitfire are my favorite skate wheels. Any cored wheels from ricta are good, and the spitfire tracers are also nice. You can also just go with bones reds for the bearings. It's all a fairly nice starter setup.

    Hi lukesamess
I wish I could just run down to the local Skate shop but I live in the boonies, a small farming town in central CA. No Skate shops around here so i have buy online. He has been skating for at least 4 years so he does or should have some experience. I have written down all your suggestions bones reds, wheels bones or spitfire, trucks ventures or theeve. Thanks! How about the board? He like sculls and evil looking things on his skateboard at least that's what his Mom told me.
    Thanks.

    Oh he's got some experience?

Get him a powell peralta reissue deck then dude, and grab some indys. The Beard runs renegade skateshop, he should have a ton of awesome goods you can peruse.

200$ is WAY more than you'll need. if you spend more than 150$ on a complete skateboard you've spent way too much.

for a complete board you'll need to get

    deck+griptape
    trucks
    wheels
    bearings
    mounting bolts

most decks perform relatively alike so as long as you're getting one in a good size from a reputable brand it'll be a quality product. some good brands to look at are Girl, Habitat, Real, Toy Machine and Zero. as for Griptape just get Jessup or Mob. Mob has tiny holes in it that make putting it on the deck really easy. plain black is the best color, anything with a graphic or other colors on it is a little less grippy.

for someone his age id get a board thats no less than 7.6 inches wide and no more than 7.8

trucks are easier to shop for, anything from Independent or Thunder will be good.

wheels are also pretty easy, i suggest anything from Spitfire or Ricta or Bones. 52mm is a good size.

bearings are super easy to pick out, just get Bones Reds bearings. they're only 15$ and they're pretty universally liked by everyone.

Get Shortys mounting hardware, bolts are basically all the same but i find shortys to be the highest quality.

i would try and have it assembled by a professional if your nephew is inexperienced at putting boards together, its not THAT hard but it can seem daunting for people doing it the first time.

go to a local skateshop if you can, the people there will have an easier time helping you in person.

if your kid likes dark stuff with lots of skulls, try the deck brand "zero" alot of their decks follow that style.

From what I've read, My best recommendation for him would be something along the lines of..
    • Zero 7.5 or 7.75 deck
    • Plain Black Mob Griptape. (Griptape with designs on them often lack durability.)
    • Independent Trucks (Size 7.5 would be best for the deck sizes you are looking at.)
    • Bones or Spitfire wheels (Anything between size 49mm-55mm should be fine)
    • Bones Reds Bearings. The best undoubtedly.
    • Shorty's Hardware. (The hardware brand is unimportant, there are no noticeable differences with them quality-wise.)

You should be spending $150 MAX. You could easily get his dream setup for under that.

This, take a look at "Zero", "Blind", or maybe "Creature".

And yes, both decks and trucks come in sizes; typically between 7 and a half to 8 and a half inches.

If you're buying a setup for someone else, I'd generally recommend getting parts in the "mid" range, that way it's not too extreme on either end (not too thin, not too wide). So I'd recommend getting anything from a 7.6 to a 7.8 deck. For any deck under 7.7, I'd recommend getting 7.5 trucks to fit on it. For any deck over that, 7.75 should be nice.

For the wheels anything from a 51->53mm should do. I'd recommend Spitfire, many of their wheel graphics would go along with the whole "dark" theme as well.

for skulls like someone above said zero and creature but also darkstar has some good ones and if your spending that much of money i would probably go with a flip P2 or an almost impact they dont have skulls but they are good styles and for a website ccs.com will have everything you need and if your spending that much shipping will be free(if the deal is still going on) just make sure you enter the code for free shipping when you check out its posted kinda at the top of the page

when did skulls come up? and darkstars are awful.

and out of all the places to buy skateboards online, CCS is the worst.

a local skateshop is WAY better, you can get help in person and look at the things you're going to buy instead of just seeing a picture.

    This.

I didn't list "Darkstar" because they generally have a bad rep for being an overall bad product. I'm not honestly sure why as I've never had one, but you should be safe with anything else listed in this thread.

Also, it's always best to buy locally. But if you can't find what you want, or if you don't have any skate shop to go to, go to THIS WEBSITE:

    http://www.renegadeskateshop.com

You can use the discount code "skaterscafe" to get 10% discount on anything you order. Trust me, it's by far the best and most honest online skate shop.
