What exactly is supposed to happen at 2012 that is so scary and that "survival kits" can help you survive?
If you read the books about it people go in all directions from aliens to the spiritual to some planet x or whatever.

So Mayans had a calender that supposedly ends that date. It's part of their religion and if we look at todays religions like Christianity no one knows when the end times begins. Who has the truth here? I think the odds of either being true is equal and by that I mean 0 chance of either being true.

Blown way out of proportion to earn money. The people supporting the idea doesn't believe in it themselves but they are doing it for money. Gotta leech off the worse half of the bellcurve when the chance is given.

First off, G!RLskater64 don't listen to the guys here, especially if you got athsma but more importantly cystic fibrosis then you are right, you really don't wanna be putting smoke into your lungs eh.

Also this **** isn't gonna happen. However it is an excuse to have a massive party, and that is an idea I can get behind.

Not a damn thing, that is the gold mine right there. No lifetime warranty needed cause the company will not be here, etc etc. Think about it. Just put some soap & water in an old sock and sell that S.O.B. for $49.99

Up until last month all they/we had was a calendar that ended on that day. That day also happens to be the exact time the solar system will be at the center of the Milky Way subject to more intense gamma rays and gravitational forces from everything else in the galaxy. However, skeptics say they'd do more to warn us if it really was of more significance than that.

"Just a calendar" up til last month when they found carvings on the back side/hidden side of a brick in an ancient building that says that 2012 is when the god they referred to as the god of war and creation is supposed to return.

It didn't say the world was ending but did say it would be violently cast in to a new and dramatically different era.
ABC news started to mention this new discovery then suddenly killed the story and removed it replacing it with another one that basically says Mexicans say western culture doesn't interpret these artifacts properly.

Have a good year folks. Live each day like you may not get another but don't quit your jobs either hahaha...

Heck, a global internet crash would create a lot of havoc alone. Can you imagine what chaos would ensue if suddenly all systems that require network connectivity lost the ability to connect completely, and it wasn't restored anytime soon? Most critical applications and platform hardware has stuff built in to fall back to satellites, cell phone networks, and telephony networks when the broadband connection experiences outages. If all of the internet interconnections came crashing down globally power grids, police communications, all television broadcasting, etc would suddenly disappear. Only solar and battery powered ham radios would be functional on a large scale. Total anarchy would ensue. Bullets would still work fine of course
