Am I the only one wondering why India took this long to blow up with COVID devastation? I'm deeply saddened by the current situation and have a lot of work colleagues at offices in India. However, I thought it would have gotten this bad last year. It's just so over crowded, people packing commuter trains like sardines, and general lack of resources like masks, sanitizer, and testing supplies..

You're not the only one wondering NoSwitch. I had a friend that went back to India in the Dec-Jan timeframe. Covid was spiking in the US at the time. He was saying that everything was back to normal... although people were wearing masks in public. It was a mystery.... now this. I have coworkers posting in Slack that they lost family members. Those pictures of fires burning in the street are bad too. Literally looks like hell.

The other mystery is why did states like Michigan have such an outbreak.... The percentage of the vaccinated population was right up there and they had lots of the same rules as CA. All I could figure was 1) Covid variants. 2) actual compliance to the safe measures. Need boots on the ground to see #2, so I'm never going to know.

There's an interesting commentary that I had typed up yesterday, but then deleted:
Basically, there are two things competing for most lunacy here in Michigan: Demographic/sociological isolation, and geographic isolation. The yoohoos who stormed Lansing were largely late Boomers (the ones whose siblings fought in Vietnam), and Gen X. 2 near-full generations of people who came of age and matured in the cocaine-addled, American Psycho, yuppie 80's; then the follow up in the nihilistic, self-loathing, slacker 90's. Yes, all of society were affected later on by the Great Recession, but these two demographics were largely unscathed. It was the elder Boomers who'd had their retirement crashed outta the stock market in 2008, and younger X'ers and Y's that stumbled into adult life without being able to get a leg up. Suddenly, they're being asked to put on a mask and interrupt their normalcy in a way they've never had to before.

Then, of course, Michigan doesn't have a lot of natural disasters - mandatory lockdowns and the like aren't for us, they're for places like California with earthquakes and wildfires, the East Coast with hurricanes and flooding, and the Great Plains with thunderstorms and tornadoes. We get a day or two of snow, laugh about it, then jump in our 4x4's and bitch about how nobody can drive in snow these days. Being asked to Stay Home Stay Safe is a completely foreign concept, especially for a virus! Locking down for a virus is not just for us in Michigan, but not for us in the United States, man. That's some Africa and India shit!

So, a relatively attractive Democrat woman comes out and says "put yer damn mask on, stay the fuck at home, the sooner y'all do this, the sooner it'll be over," and they're all like "I ain't takin' no guff from no woman!"

And a little side note: The UP is generally more progressive than the sticks of the northern LP - the UP has a lot of academia and union presence...while individuals might be Trumpy, most of 'em just want to be left alone. The actual kidnappers were from the backwoods of the northern LP, to the best of my knowledge.

Darker blues indicate higher rates of vaccinations - things these counties have in common are academia, tourism, and/or union presence. Tourism is important because while the populace may or may not be Trumpers, their livelihoods depend on being legally allowed to have people there, buying stuff and staying in their hotels. Lighter blues are lower rates of vaccinations - Not coincidentally "Trump Country." Especially that big pale section in the middle. Those are the counties that are the reason why Michigan will never reach 70% immunization.

If it makes you feel better, CA is likely to have a hard time reaching the 70% goals too.... some based on fear of the vaccine itself and.... we have no shortage of folks that don't want to be told what to do. The US is full of "spoiled children"... or at least we act like it. Lol...
