Default Helmets... whats wrong with them?

So recently I've been watching some skateboard videos on youtube, and I came across the "thrasher hall of meat" video. It just surprises me how these survive these accidents(there were quite a lot). A lot of these included slamming their head on to the concrete. In 2011 alone there were 42 fatalities only in the us, the statistic that made my gut wrench was that the majority of the deaths(no helmet) are from the age group 13-18(total of 26). There are kids as young as 11 who died while skateboarding. Studies show that wearing a helmet decreases the risk of a head injury by 90%! This should at least cut the number of deaths by 30%, give or take. Most skaters don't wear a helmet because they say its uncomfortable, but a lot of skaters in the skate park(mandatory helmet) say that it doesn't really bother them after a while. The silly excuse that "its uncomfortable" is bull****. We all know that we don't wear a helmet because it's "uncool", and it looks weird on you. I don't think fashion will matter anymore when your head is gushing with blood. I'm not trying to force people into wearing a helmet(its impossible anyways), I think that everyone has their own freedom to do whatever they want. I hope that these statistics will "hopefully" encourage people to respond and start wearing helmets. There's just no sense that helmets or any kind of protective gear should be neglected.

So the police can easily identifie you. This guy from work frequently wears his full face while driving his car just to piss them off.

Because drivers don't really need helmets. Cars are already equiped with airbags to protect their head, whereas skateboarders don't have any protection from bailing on the concrete. Although F1 cars have no airbags, the rules say its mandatory for drivers to wear a helmet.

I would definitely wear a helmet if I was going down something big. But I don't skate big things cause that's where I'm most likely to get hurt and hurt is downtime and downtime sucks when your country has 2 months of skatability.

if you aren't wearing a seatbelt that is certainly true but beside the point.

as to the original question people don't wear helmets because they don't think they are going to get hurt and haven't thought about the consequences of a TBI. Statistically the numbers are very small and given the amount of time (years) people actually skateboard and what they ride most people have a very small risk. Of course when you get old like me and you have been on a board for 40 years the risk is exponentially higher. Plus I have reasons to live like a wife and a mortgage. Finding a helmet that fits is pretty easy these days, if it fits its comfortable and one is more likely to use it

A lot of people get hurt wearing helmets too, because they become over confident, sort of like how the death rate for car crashes went up when seat belts became mandatory in the 60s or something

also most helmets do not protect against brain stem injury, nor do they serve to provide impact protection at larger velocities and impacts (impact weight doubles ever 6 feet or so, or something like that).

Even if this may be true, injuries to the head should be avoided as much as possible. A concussion is easy to get, and some can be fatal.

Does it do any good at all for most skating type impacts?
TBIs have gone way down in biking since helmet laws came in to play. Wouldn't you agree that a fall from a bike is likely worse than a fall from a board (not including stairs or gaps).
Would you rather your 5 year old child wear one while they are learning?

There are few if any reasons NOT to wear one other than comfort and image.

Full disclosure, I don't wear one often skating, but almost always wear one skiing or biking.

That's not entirely true, it depends if the person is self-conscious about his looks or not. In a logical sense it would be wise to wear a helmet because the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. For example, convertible cars look really stylish but there are many problems associated with the design: it would be easy for an intruder to invade your car with a knife, the top can wear down and disrupt aerodynamics, and ride quality is just plainly awful.
