Default October Member of the Month Interview with Stumbles

What first motivated you to try skateboarding?

my brothers friends at first, since i was on rollerblades sadly.. and i had a quarter pipe that they would use on their skateboards then one day one of the guys put together a board for me from old parts they had. and i started using it on my ramp and got addicted.

    Any tips on mannies?

not really haha, just do them heaps.. i do them alot cause i find manuals the most fun plus there's so many combo's to do with them,

What's it like living in a country where everything is trying to kill you?

haha i'ts no even bad, we just have a few spiders and snakes that are scared of us and avoid us at all costs. plus crocodiles that are only in the top of Australia and sharks that are everywhere in the world...
you guys (Americans atleast) have bears, cougars and bobcats....fuck that those can and will actually eat me...thats way worse than anything here.

Have you ever left your Australia to travel? If so where and why.

No, sadly i was always too broke a few years ago since i had a mortgage to pay off from 19 till 25 when i gave up and sold my place to move to Brisbane, so i never got to go on any trips my friends were doing, now me and some friends are planning a trip to Japan next year to go on a tour with best friends skateboards (who my friend rides for) we got invited to go on tour with them and would be stupid to pass on that. so that will be my first time overseas and hoppefully i can get the money together to do that.

I know you wanted to start a business, and that you have (had?) a pretty awesome job as a secret shopper of sorts. How is the job/ business plans going? And when are you couch surfing the US?

I haven't started my business yet, what i wanted to start was an online skate shop but i didnt really have the money so i put it on hold and planned to start a small clothing business instead. but my friend is looking to open a skate shop here so i'm waiting for that then i can start selling my stuff through his shop (while working there)

hopefully in around year and a half I'll be hitting the U.S and doing some couch ...and alot of skating

How do you maintain a balance of skating, work, girls, friends, etc?

the same way everyone that skates i think.
i do whatever needs to be done at the time, but if i can blow it off for a skate i will haha

What are your top 5 beers?

not really much of a drinker any more, i would prefer smoking any day.

some favourites back in the day where james boags, Peroni, premium dry, extra dry and a heap of other cheap aussie beers

What tricks are you working on right now?

well i just learnt a few so i'm trying to get those more consistent.. frontside flips, feebles and hardflips..

next i'd like front crooks, back tails and back 180 to switch manual but those all need alot of work first.

What are your warm-up tricks? Do you have any "hard" tricks that are easy for you? Say, natural gift for kickflips, etc?

for warm up i stretch then do the straight 8 but with 180 variations.. so front 180 back 180, nollie, fakie and switch all in a line, it's a great way too warm up. and i can't do it with flips so i changed it to 180's

easy tricks for me would be nose manuals and 360 flips.

What are some of your accomplishments in skateboarding, what are some pivotal points?

anytime i learn a new trick i consider a pivotal moment or accomplishment haha

Who are your influences, in skating and outside of it?

anyone who's having fun living life. especially skaters, i can't think of a better lifestyle than a skate one, haha i'm pretty easy

Who do you skate with? How does the session usually go? Do you have any preferred/secret spots?

I skate with a few friends Nick, Ben, Kouki my friend from Japan (when he's here) and my flatmate Aaron films sometimes and is learning to skate..

we usually meet at my place and watch a vid and have a coffee then go hit a school or two plus some parks. usually getting a feed from a cafe between spots and eating at the next one, we always have a camera in case we find a good spot or someone is trying something crazy, then finish the day off back at my house for a smoke and we watch any footage we filmed.

for spots theres a few that are closeby to my house mainly schools, we don't really have any secret spots cause i'm sure someones skate them all before.

What famous spots have you seen/skated/filmed at?

not many just bench and ledge spots you'd see in videos like the benches at suncorp stadium is in alot of vids, or the Kangaroo point stairs

plus Martin place in sydney and olympic park

If you had to ride a set-up for the rest of your life and the pop wouldn't go away, what is it? include everything.

ok well for deck i'd have to go with my favourite skaters pro model so a Josh Kalis DGK deck, i love my current trucks so i'd use those Venture Westagates, spitfire fomuala 4 99a wheels, bones ceramic bearings, jessup tape, lucky bolts and some shortys shock pads since i like that little extra cushion. that is the perfect set up to me

would you pay to be on the cover of thrasher if there was a guarantee nobody would ever know?

haha no, it would be the worst cover ever and everybody would know

Which pro past or present would you want to skate and hang out for a day and you couldn't tell anybody?

either Josh Kalis or Biebel but fuck that i'd be telling everybody haha

Have you ever broken your trucks? How?

yeah once i cracked a truck, they were tensor lights and had been sitting in my parets garage for over ten years i did a tre on flat and it cracked haha

    Which trick feels the best?

i'd say a frontside flip on a nice steep bank... which happens to be one of my newest tricks or just a nose mannie on a nice high ledge

Which skater inspired you to start/keep going?

to start as above was my brothers friends, to start again (yeah i stupidly quit for a few years when i got a car and a gf and started partying) was Guy Mariano i randomly bought fully flared when i was buying shoes and then watched his epicly later'd and was inspired to start skating again... i had a few shitty years and skating has made life perfect again.

What's your version of a perfect day? What are you looking forward to in your life?

I'm happy to say that it's pretty much my average Sunday. wake up after a nice sleep in make a coffee and watch a skate vid while i wait for my friends to come round then head out to have breakfast before hitting up a school or spot nearby skate that and warm up while we work out where we want to hit up then skate for the rest of the day at different spots. finishing off with a good dinner and a smoke while watching a movie or tv series

and i'm really looking forward to starting to travel overseas on skate trips, going to Japan soon and China after that.

Where did you come up with Stumbles at? Common username for many accounts?

my names Jackson and that was taken so i just started trying to think of names to use somehow i weirdly came up with stumbles and it wasn't taken so i took it lol

Imagion you have the ability to teleport for a single day. Briefly describe your 24hr adventure

firstly make myself rich for the rest of mt life then teleport to all the places i want to see around the world then fuck with people for a few hours scaring and amazing them... then i think i'd hit all my dream skate spots.. i would have a life times worth of fun in that day

thanks for voting me as motm guys hope i didnt ramble on and bore you too much

    nice stumbles, congrats
any relationship that matters - a friendship, a family, a romance, a band - anything - is a perilous and fragile thing because along with all the amazing experiences and creations that can come from something so intimate and exhausting comes the possibility for things to crumble and shatter or whither and die. when that happens, it's easy to forget what was precious amidst all the disaster. we should always carry our history with us but never let it bury us.

Great interview. I couldn't imagine having a mortgage at 18. Good luck with your business endeavors. And I hope you get to Japan and have fun.

so you'd be reenacting the really bad movie jumper?
Above the lakes, above the vales,
The mountains and the woods, the clouds, the seas,
Beyond the sun, beyond the ether,
Beyond the confines of the starry spheres,
My soul, you move with ease
