Hey Rockstar. Have you tried the New Holland Dragons Milk Stout yet?

Why, yes. As a matter of fact, my wife and I are mug club members at New Holland Brewing...Dragons Milk isn't one of my favorites, but they do release pub-only flavors and infusions that are really good. I have been fortunate enough to actually barrel-age some Homebrew beer in a Dragons Milk barrel once.

Nice! I'm a huge fan of Bourbon Barrel aged Beers. I just had a bomber of Dragons Milk after work last night.

I've found something peculiar about porters and stouts...they actually take on a slightly different flavor if they're made close enough to a body of water to smell it. The best porters and stouts I've ever had have come from breweries within a half mile of a major shoreline; be it the Chesapeake Bay, any of the Great Lakes, or even the Pacific.

I love the complexities of barrel aged beer, although those can come off as being overly complicated and snobbish (see New Holland's Incorrigible barrel aged sour), or different for the sake of being different (Goose Island had a small batch of barrel aged stuff that tasted awful because they simply crammed too much stuff into it).

A lot of Maine micro brews and craft brews are ales, stouts, and porters partially for that reason. The other part is because the mineral content in the water is close to the mineral content of the water in England and Ireland. I wonder what Michigan water is similar to.

I honestly don't think it has to do with the mineral content in the water...one of the breweries we went to in Niagara, Ontario said it was the air, but that sounds a bit far fetched as well. Though, I hadn't thought of that 😳.

I'll pick on New Holland's Poet stout...it tastes quite a bit like Guinness. But, New Holland's production facilities are a few miles inland from Lake Michigan. Macatawa Ales, made in Holland, on the same municipal water as NHB, but is located 3 blocks from Lake Macatawa, that flows into Lake Michigan. The Macatawa stout has a certain body to it, that Poet or Guinness lacks.

I know that's only one example, but I've experienced similar things in Ontario, Wisconsin, and Maryland, with porters/stouts made directly on the shoreline, versus a few miles inland...and, while I've never been to California, I've noticed the same thing. I'll keep asking around and see what I can find out...

It's interesting there was a pizza chain back home that started out as an open window walk up on the beach. They all used the same dough but found that in the other locations it didn't taste the same. The conclusion they came to is that it was the salt in the air from the original location. The solution they came up with was to make all of the dough at the original location and deliver it to the other locations.

Rum and Cream soda is delicious. And dangerous since it basically covers up any alcoholic taste.

My buddies used to make a shot called Devil's Spunk that contained whiskey, 151, Tabasco Sauce, and black pepper.
