Although with the Welinder I think part of the reason they did that was because it was cost effective. At the time Powells 2 most popular full size decks were Tony Hawks and Welinders (coincidentally they started Birdhouse together). Mullen, Welinders, and Kevin Harris' freestyle decks together probably sold as well as Welinders street deck by itself. My guess is that the rejected full sized Welinders got cut down to freestyle boards. This is just a theory mind you I have no evidence to back this up.

Makes sense that freestyle decks were cut from pig pressed plywood.. Volume discounts would be better to start with as many of the same parts as possible. Buying 1000 of the exact same shaped boards to make 800 pigs and 200 freestyle decks would be cheaper than buying 800 of one and 200 of something slightly different to cut for the two skus..

What's even more interesting is that if you were to peel apart boards with different colored laminates on the colored ones you will see graphics with cosmetic issues. They essentially recycle the blemished plies.

I also have a friend who sells used bicycles. One of his sources is the guy who runs Independent Trucks. They buy discarded bicycles in bulk to melt down for the aluminum. Yet some of the bicycles are still in good working condition and really high end so rather than melting them down they sell them used and if they have high end components they will put them aside too.

Wait, Indys are recycled? I thought those were virgin-grade aluminum.

Yeah. And the hippie I am doesn't hold it against them. Even though I'm skating Aces now once I get up to a 7.4 I'll probably jump to Indys. The way I see it recycling the aluminum doesn't really compromise the integrity of the product.

Anybody else ever find themselves in a position where they have a pretty large social circle but don't actually fit in anywhere in it? Been feeling really weird about my social life lately. Kinda feel like an outcast regardless of who i'm around.

All of my life. Some people find it an endearing quality.

Yep, that was my entire adolescence. I never got invited to parties and Hangouts, because everyone around me assumed that I already had plans with another group. It's almost flattering, in hindsight, knowing that nobody ever felt the need to pity me and invite me along "just because.'

Even in most social situations I find a corner or room where no one is and my party comes to me. Or I will make an obscure reference like "I wanna dip my balls in it" (MTV's "The State") and figure if anyone gets the reference they are the ones I want to hang out with.

Saw a 1984 Welander Freestyle on eBay the other day. They wanted $400 for it.. Trackers and Bones Freestyle wheels. It looked pretty heavily used but mostly there.. totally gnarly!! Someone will pay that for it assuming it hasn't already sold..

For about 6 months straight I saw a Welinder Nordic Sperm deck on eBay for about $400. Decomposed has a reissue of the Nordic Skull model. They've also done Kevin Harris, and Mullen reissues. If they did a Cameron Martin reissue they would have the whole Powell Freestyle team.

I just saw this the other day:

It's cool to see these where the skaters and the non skaters aren't acting like total dicks to each other.
