Yeah, they are. I always thought it was just a bang, not a smoke screen thing. I've never seen it before (not on tele or so). Going to do some research

Yea I'm not 100% sure but the smoke is because it is travelling so fast the air doesn't have enough time to move around the plane, So thats when the smoke and sonic boom! occur.

Lol how weird, I was watching some videos on youtube about sonic booms, I think it's a really strange but cool effect, I don't quite understand how it all works though.

Another common thing that breaks the sound barrier is bullets. Most rifles are very loud due to the sonic boom. They make ammunition that is referred to as subsonic ammunition that travels slower but is obviously less audible (it is particularly important when using silencers).

Contrary to the urban myth you can't silence a gun even something as small as a 22lr makes noise. You can suppress the sound of the muzzle blast if the round itself is travelling faster than 1140fps it will create its own sonic boom. Generally speaking a suppressed weapon generates less than 140db of sound. I once watched the vapor trail of a .50cal BMG cross a mile of desert flat before destroying a 55gal barrel of water....very cool (note I did not shoot said bullet I am not that good a shot)
that's gonna leave a mark.........yup gravity still works

Which is why when you're using a silencer, you'll either need to use subsonic ammunition (Or a modified weapon*) to decrease the muzzle velocity of the round.

*As is the case with the MP5-SD.

Silenced firearms are still loud though, the media exaggerate suppressors' abilities way too much.

I have been in a killhouse with a half dozen SEALs all using MP5 SDs... suppressed means you don't need ear protection not that its quiet enough to escape notice. In general paintball guns are quieter
