It's an open source photo editor, like photoshop but free.

GIMP is based off of CS3 [the newer versions anyhow].

and the interface is shockingly similar... but i have CS4 and the newest GIMP...
but i think that once i got into CS4 i liked it better.

I would choose the newest gimp over CS3 anyhow.

    Good tut by the way.

ya it's really hard to compare the 2 because they are kinda different but i do think that photoshop is cool in the way that all of your tools are on the same window but that can also be a draw back too so it's hard to say which is actually better.

doesn't really matter but if you can get one for free and it's just as good then why pay?

nah, photoshop is way better... try doing 3d objects and stuff in gimp... theres a reason photoshop costs so much more, vespecially now with cs4... content aware scaling for example, theres quite a bunch of tools you only get in ps

    also, gimp looks like ****
We really didn't mean to 'do a Nietzsche' as it were,
and kill God, but then again, God's been dead for over three hours now,
and things still seem to be going on pretty much as usual in the universe.

Never used linux, but photoshop feels more professional and i like the feel of editing in photoshop more than in gimp. Don't get me wrong. GIMP is a great piece of software, but I just feel that photoshop is the best out of the two. Now for beginners in the world of photo manipulation, then yes GIMP is a great program to get started in.

i think that i would actually say different about starting in gimp because to me it seems to be just a little bit harder but still learnable and photoshop just has a easy to use interface
