Default December 20, 2012 Doomsday theory. - Attempt No. 2

According to the Popol Vuh, a book compiling details of creation accounts known to the K'iche' Maya of the Colonial-era highlands, we are living in the fourth world.[8] The Popol Vuh describes the first three creations that the gods failed in making and the creation of the successful fourth world where men were placed. In the Maya Long Count, the previous creation ended at the start of a 13th b'ak'tun.

The previous creation ended on a long count of 12.19.19.17.19. Another 12.19.19.17.19 will occur on December 20, 2012, followed by the start of the fourteenth b'ak'tun, 13.0.0.0.0, on December 21, 2012.

    Long Count Calander

The Long Count calendar identifies a date by counting the number of days from August 11, 3114 BCE in the proleptic Gregorian calendar or September 6 in the Julian calendar, (−3113 astronomical dating). Rather than using a base-10 scheme, like Western numbering, the Long Count days were tallied in a base-20 scheme. Thus 0.0.0.1.5 is equal to 25, and 0.0.0.2.0 is equal to 40.

The Long Count is not consistently base-20, however, since the second digit rolls over to zero when it reaches 18. Thus 0.0.1.0.0 does not represent 400 days, but rather only 360 days

Basically, the mayans belived that the gods made 3 worlds prior to the present one and after a certain amount of years each world ends.

Sounds a bit far fetched, doesnt it? Whats your opinion on the subject?

Im just posting this because we had a whole discussion on this in class and all the kids in my school are dumb and didnt have anything to back up their "OMG WORLD ENDING IN 2012!!!"

It's more of a new age thing than new world. Like going into a new millennium, we will be going into a new astrological age on that day. No world ending for us.

I have a couple of thoughts....

    1. If the Mayan's were that smart, why didn't they see their own demise?

    2. Would using a larger rock for your calender extend the length of the world?

All jokes aside. It is pretty amazing that they could predict eclipses and the way the earth, sun will be aligned with the center of the milky way, which only happens once every 26k years. Very interesting, we'll see what happens on 12-20-12. I plan on being around after that though.

Hah, after reading the first paragraph I knew there's going to be something on about religion.

I don't believe in this. So the Mayans predicted lots of things? We can predict an economical rise, weather, the course of planets, stars, galaxies and more. If we would predict right now that the world will end 11.07.5118 and carve it into a frikkin huge stone which we hide in a golden temple under ground. So maybe the people of the future will find it on like 10 years before the predicted date, maybe they will freak out just as much as we do, keeping in mind that we lived in a really "primitive" age, and if we could predict astronomical phenomenons etc. so they think there is got to be magic playing around or supernatural powers.
Maybe it's just a huge prank that the Mayans executed before killing themselves?

Isn't it just a cyclic calendar and it just happens to be the date one ends and thus the next begins and if I recall its like the day that they find out whether their God lets them have another cycle or not (hence the end of the universe...or not).

Why does everyone think that the mayans all just died all of a sudden? All they did was abandon their civilizations and know one knows why. There are still some descendants of the mayans living today...

Not true, they were killed by the Europeans during the discovery of the Americas.

unless some freak accident happened, its way too illogical for the earth to just go kapooey on a predicted date made over 1000 years ago.

and if we followed the mayans word for word like this conspiracy, we'd still be building pyramids and sacrificing goats and hearts to "Gods"

    come on everybody, grow up

There's no known full blooded mayans or even majority blooded mayans in the world today, meaning there never can be, so essentially the mayan race is dead. Many people speak latin but it is still a dead language. And I actually have some Aztec heritage in me, that doesn't mean I'm Aztec, just as people with Mayan heritage aren't Mayans.
