    Default Just a Beginner

    Hi everyone!

My brother just started skateboarding, even though he had a board for a while just lying around in his room. He said that his friend (who he says knows about skateboarding) said it was a really bad skateboard and that he should get a new one. So my brother brought a new skateboard and gave me his old one, because I wanted to learn too.

Before I buy a better skateboard I want to learn a bit. So far I can get on the skateboard and... skate... that's it. I can't even do the thing where you stop by titlting the board backwards. I've been trying for about three days now and it just won't work.

Also, it seems like the board keeps moving to one side. Maybe it's me, maybe it's the board, or maybe it's the street (it might be a bit curved??). Most likely, it's me, and I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

    So, my questions are:
    1. How can I become better/faster at skateboarding?
    2. How can I learn how to do BASIC things like doing that stopping thing where you tilt back the board or doing the thing where you switch direction by slightly tilting back the board?
    3. What's the problem that I have? Is it me, the board, or the ground?
    4. If I can, how can I fix it?

Also, before doing anything like buying a new board or fixing the skateboard (if that's what's causing the problem), I want to try skateboarding a bit to see if I actually like it and if I'm actually good at it.

Thanks a lot if you help me!

First thing is first... flip your board upside down and spin the wheels with your hand. Do they spin freely or do they stop quickly. If they stop quickly, you could have bad or crappy bearings. The wheels should be fine as long as they don't have any flat spots and they aren't plastic. As for the board turning on its own, you could be leaning and not realize it or, there could be something going on with the trucks but, I haven't quite learned that much yet. Hopefully, someone else can chime in.

If it's a Walmart/Target board, it might be good enough to learn balance on but, anything beyond going in a straight line and you're probably better off with a different board.

yeah, its probably just a walmart type board (which are absolutely terrible).

i assume you want to learn to heel drag and not tail drag (that will destroy your board.) it actually takes some time to do that well. just hang your heel off the end of the tail press down and then drag it, after time it will become second nature.

i'd rather ruin my board than my shoes?

i mean you can see your shoes gradually getting worn away, but your board can suddenly break and you realise you should have just tail dragged.

or even step off to slow down, try not waste anything, conserve your equipment :P

    you are so noobish.

2 days of tail dragging will completely razortail your board. and after a week of doing it you wont even have a tail.

i've been heel dragging in the shoes i have now for like 4 months and they still arent noticeably messed up on the heel.

    tail dragging=for 12 year olds

heel dragging=for the people who skate more than they're on the internet

    You forgot one

    "Slamming = better skaters"
Don't do that unless you can take pain

    1. How can I become better/faster at skateboarding? To get better, earn how to ollie, it's the main motion for some tricks. To get faster, Loosen up your wheels if they are too tight, your wheels may be too soft, which makes go slow, or the bearings suck.
    2. How can I learn how to do BASIC things like doing that stopping thing where you tilt back the board or doing the thing where you switch direction by slightly tilting back the board? Don't tilt back, it messes your board up. Instead, drag your toe or heel on the ground to stop,
    3. What's the problem that I have? Is it me, the board, or the ground? It's you and the board. You probably can't balance well if you just started out, so you lean to the side more probably, easy fix, just work on balancing. The board may have loose trucks since it's from walmart/k-mart/target, so you turn more easely.
    4. If I can, how can I fix it? Read above.

lol, i have a mad habit of highlighting text as i read it, and found your hidden message :P

and razorblading and heel dragging aside.

i've never even had to use both, i just step off when i want to slow down.

if i want to stop i put my foot in the pocket concave and do a 180 skid type thing

only razerblading i do is like anyone else, when they fall

just slow down, and pop your front foot off to stop, with your back foot in line with the board, on the tail

chris cole heeldrag at 5:16 just for an example

The thing in the video at 5:16 is what I wanted to do, but how can I learn how to do even simple things like that? Whenever I try it doesn't work...

Is there anything I can do to practice it? Like holding on to something and doing something with the skateboard or doing something on grass or something?

But when I try that I get like this weird panic-y feeling and either don't do it or do it and have the board slide far away from me

Damn, guess I must be a twelve year old. I still haven't gotten heel dragging down. I always feel like I'm going to fall of the board.

I don't exactly tail drag either though.

Currently, I stop by doing the following:

1: Step off with back foot
    2: Lift front froot
3: As tail slides under front foot, tap down to stop board

The result is I end up stopped with my board tilter up and ready to grab. I suppose I could even bounce it into the air doing this, but I don't fancy my chances of catching it with one hand...

    So...

Is the above qualified as tail dragging?

dude, skating is all about doing anything you want
if that's your way of stopping and you feel comfortable doin' it, just go for it
to stop i usually do a 90 degree switch
