Is 1.99999999... equal to 2...? - Skateboard Forums - Message Board

I was thinking about this for a long time now.

If 1.9999999... never stops, then it should eventaully reach 2, right?

But it's not 2, I don't think because it states that the number is 1.9 and not 2.

Please excuse my math if this is easy to others, I'm not too good at it really. But this confuses me so much. Maybe it has a very simple answer, maybe I'm partially stupid, or maybe nobody knows?

Well, just think of it this way. Infinite is a very large concept, so large that it is impossible to measure, it goes on and never ever ever ever ever stops, so don't you eventaully HAVE to reach 2?

no you just made no sense. if it goes on FOREVER. then itll never reach the next mark. so youre pretty much saying that...2 which can also be writen as 2.0 or 2.00 etc. will eventually reach 3 if you continue writing the 0s. which in no way is true. with the 1.999 youll just extremely close to two but thats a whole nother thing

well hes saying it u keep on going with a but 0's it will go to 2.1 but this thread is stupid. it wont reach 2, end of story it could be like 473294782.999999 it still wont get to 473294783 with a million .9's.

No, it will never equal two.

If I stand in front of a wall that is ten feet away. Move in to half that distance (5 feet), then half that distance, then half that, would I ever ACTUALLY get to the wall?

No.

its an exponential graph, when you take physics youll learn all about it. take the x axis and the y axis. if said # will continue to stay a 1.9 repeated. the graph will durl up straighter and straighter coming ever closer to the 2 marker on either axis( whichever way you put it) but will never reach 2.0. it will always be a small percantage away from 2. 1%, .1%, .00000000000000000000000000000001% and so on

because 10/2=5 5/2=2.5 2.5/2=1.25 1.25/2=.625
and so on... never reaches 0

Iv heard that example used, its really good to illustrate the concept.

Because your only moving half of the distance you are from the wall, towards the wall each time. It gets to a point where obviously we can't possibly imagine how minute the actual distance would be. But if we only get half of that distance closer we still won't touch. But each time your moving half of the new distance closer, not half of the original distance.

It's kinda hard to explain, even if you do understand!

Nope, you would never stop getting closer, for as long as time went on you would never actually reach the door.

Same with 1.99999999999999, no matter how many 9s, which can go on infinitely, it will never be 2, it will just continuously continue to get closer by smaller and smaller amounts.

However!

0.999... x 10 = 9.999...

9.999... -0.999... = 9 (which you can say is 0.999... x 9)

/9 = 1

Therefore 0.999 = 1
